Health minister urged to tackle cases of sexual harassment

Non-governmental organisations yesterday called on Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn to tackle sexual harassment in his office.

The move comes as a supervisory level official at the ministry’s Permanent Secretary’s Office is being accused of groping four female temporary staff members.

Meanwhile, a police source said the accused official, Asadet Rattanaworaprasert, had reported himself to Muang Nonthaburi Police Station to hear the sexual harassment charges against him on Thursday. He denied the charges and said he would only testify in court. He was passed on to the Nonthaburi Court prosecutor and released on Bt200,000 bail.

NGOs, led by Women and Men Progressive Movement Foundation director Jadet Chaowilai, submitted the open letter via permanent secretary Dr Sopon Mekthon, who affirmed Asadet’s case was also being probed by the ministry’s fact-finding panel. It would become clear next week if a serious disciplinary probe would be launched against him, Sopon told them.

Sopon said the panel would also probe alleged threats made against the victims and lobbying attempts to make the issue go away.

The NGOs called for serious punishments for harassers, impartial channels for victims to file complaints, and rehabilitation for victims.

They also demanded measures to prevent intervention by others to manipulate the outcome of probes.

Jadet suggested the ministry should have dismissed the accused official from the civil service to make way for the disciplinary probe. The probe should include an impartial organisation or individuals to ensure justice and transparency, he said.

Asadet had been given until the end of yesterday to offer a defence to the fact-finding committee against accusations that he sexually harassed four female subordinates.

Failure to do so would cause the panel to base its finding on the available evidence, which would be unfavourable to him, Piyasakol said.

Asadet’s supervisor is also under scrutiny for allegedly failing to act on complaints of harassment that allegedly went on for three years.

Piyasakol had said the matter must be resolved as an example for all ministry branches, in order to maintain a culture of virtue and morality.

Pending the investigation’s outcome, Asadet has been transferred to a district office in Nonthaburi.

The matter became public after one of the complainants – a 30-year-old married woman with children – led co-workers in secretly recording an alleged instance of harassment on video.

The video, submitted along with their testimony earlier this month, ended up on social media, prompting widespread criticism and calls for the official to be punished.

Wanna bet that the inquiry is conducted by men! And that they find that it was all a misunderstanding and just a bit of exuberant fun. Kind of reminds me of the way that the " grab em by the pussy" remark by that sad sack Trump was simply dismissed as just locker room fun.

Don't worry soon they'll will have "pink carpets" for all female co-workers at the entry gates because it already was proven successful by  the TAT at the airport to propagate female tourism.

In no way do i wish to detract from the gravity of sexual harassment......but did anyone notice the ladies in the photo?

They look exactly the same as the 'feminists' in Australia who protest about the same thing.

Fat and/or ugly.

Not much chance of them being sexually harassed.

Jealousy perhaps?

Or just simply man haters?

In what way is it at all like the Trump tape?

This is an actual sexual assault. It is in no way similar.

And of course the metrosexual, man bag carrying , lefty tossers.

My apologies, I forgot about them.

Like a lot of things these days, even the most minor infraction is labelled as "xyzism".

When sexual harassment meant assault or even rape it had some meaning. It has lost that these days. Opening a car door for a woman can be seen as sexual harassment.

Remember the legal guy in the UK who recently posted a comment about a  co-worker online? I think he said she looked nice. Shredded nighties everywhere.......how DARE a man compliment a lady.

The world has gone mad.

Those ugly bags have nothing to fear from me. Perhaps they should eat less & bitch less. Only sexual harassment they get is for being a pain in the ass.

I recall sitting in an internet cafe near Sukh. Soi 8 & a gal ran her hands up my shorts not too many years ago.

I did not complain.

One must stop, and think....Here's these "less than attractive" females protesting about sexual harassment. Perhaps it's because they are incompetent?

I honestly find it hard to believe sex was on anybody's mind, unless you are Bill Murray.

Look on the "bright" side of things, Thailand still needs to catch up to have men lose their jobs and careers over false accusations that have been proven in a court under oath beyond a shred of doubt and still face no legal consequences.

Don't mind me though, I'm sitting back and enjoying this shitshow quite a bit, despite it needing to bring tears to ones eyes non stop. The world hasn't just gone mad, it's regressing and becoming more retarded then it used to be.

I would like to complain!

If you're going to write/post mind-numbing, click-bait articles, I demand pretty women in see-through tops and miniskirts in provocative positions to be the visual I see.

looking at pictures of butt-ugly heifers with an ass so big you can see it from the front is not in keeping with the reason we are here.

Give it up, TV!
