Bangkok resident Gerry Carter - representing Thailand - is within touching distance of the playoffs for the World Scrabble Championships being held in Nottingham, England.

After three of four days in the preliminary competition Gerry is in 13th place with a 15.5/10.5 record. Gerry tied the final game of the day versus Neil Scott of Scotland 449-449.

A further nine games remain on Friday after which the top eight will play the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Highlights on Day 3 were Gerry's games against two Pakistani wunderkind. In game 21 Gerry just got the better of Abdullah Abbasi after playing OBLIGEES and ORATION for bonus scores.

The game also featured the word JUNTA.

In game 23 Gerry played the 15 year old champion of Pakistan Sohaib Sanaullah widely tipped as being a future world champion. On this occasion Gerry, a former international school teacher in Bangkok who is a Thai resident, was rather luck to win as his opponent did not know the word MUDLARK.

Gerry will make the playoffs if he can secure six wins out of the remaining nine games.

Leading the field is the formidable presence of world number one and best player of all time Nigel Richards of New Zealand.

Nigel recently won the French championships despite not being able to speak a word of French past "bonjour".
