Narathiwat closes for insurgency drill

By The Nation

Narathiwat city centre was briefly closed for a military drill on Saturday to prepare for possible insurgent attacks in the Far South.

The Narathiwat task force’s Commander Theerawit Siriwanlop said the military, local authorities and other related agencies conducted the drill to prepare for an attack in the business centre of the city on Saturday. A road in the city was closed for an hour.

Theerawit said the operation was designed not only to raise the preparedness of the officers, but to encourage confidence among local people.

It was also aligned with the policy of Military Region 4, which has ordered joint security officers in Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and four districts of Songkhla to conduct emergency incident drills in eight main economic centres of the Far South at least once a month.

Saturday’s drill stimulated a motorcycle bomb attack.
