Woman severely injured in hit-and-run by taxi

By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A teacher was severely injured when she was hit by a taxi while crossing a Pathum Thani road early on Wednesday. The driver fled the scene shortly after the accident.

The accident happened on a road along Klong Sam canal in Tambon Klong Sam of Pathum Thani’s Klong Luang district.

The victim was identified as Atchara Phasinetr, 51, who teaches at Pitchaya Sueksa School in Nonthaburi’s Pak Kret district.

A witness, Sitthirat Boonkerd, 19, told police that he saw the woman crossing the road toward the bus stop when she was hit by a speeding taxi.

Sitthirat said the taxi stopped briefly about 10 metres away, then sped off when he walked over to check on the woman.

Pol Captain Kiartpong Tibma, deputy inspector of Klong Luang police station, said police were hunting for the taxi driver.

Any boneheaded, spineless driver who has fled the scene after an accident, should be charged with DUI automatically, when caught.  I'm convinced that this fleeing the scene, so common in Thailand, is due to the consumption of Lao Khao being a national hobby amongst the working class.
