Ukraine Seeks 20-Year US Security Guarantee for Peace Deal

In Munich, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine requires a 20-year security guarantee from the US to sign a peace deal with Russia. This assurance should be legally binding, outlining specific US support for a European military presence in Ukraine if peace is achieved.

Zelenskyy also urged for a clear timeline for Ukraine's EU membership, with some officials suggesting 2027 as a potential date. At the Munich Security Conference, he expressed frustration over perceived US reluctance to outline concrete security commitments.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended a partnership proposal to Europe but emphasized it was conditional, aligning with Trump-era stances on climate, migration, and tariffs. Although Rubio acknowledged the need for cooperation, he warned the US might proceed independently if conditions weren’t met.

Zelenskyy dismissed the notion of withdrawing from Donbas for quick peace, citing the population living there. He revealed the US had suggested a 15-year security deal, but Ukraine insists on 20 years, seeking a stable framework for its future security.

The talks in Geneva will also address the destruction of Ukrainian energy infrastructure by Russian attacks. Zelenskyy noted Europe’s limited involvement in negotiations, a sentiment shared by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. He voiced concerns about Russia’s possible stalling tactics, given the change in their negotiation delegation.

Despite American pressure for a swift agreement, Zelenskyy declared that Ukrainian elections could only occur after a ceasefire to ensure voter safety. Trump urged Zelenskyy to accelerate negotiations but has not specified repercussions if Ukraine doesn’t comply.

With Iranian-supplied drones causing significant damage in Ukraine, Zelenskyy criticized Iran’s actions and called for immediate global intervention to halt regimes like Iran from further destruction.

Amid this complex geopolitical landscape, European leaders remain pessimistic about a breakthrough, while Zelenskyy aims to sustain resistance, envisioning ongoing conflict and advocating for continued support against Russian aggression.
