I would drop the coffee beans and get some hibiscus and pommegranate teas, that is if you are also health conscious as well as appearance conscious, (razors)). Coffee contains chlorogenic acid, gallic acid and phloridzin which degrade the hypothalamus, pancreas and pituatary respectively. These degraded parts are the basic necessities for the cancer nucleus. Coffee also contains caffeic acid which is the specific allergen for 8 different organs. An allergen inflamed organ allows easy entry for the cancer nucleus and complex, starting a malignancy. Maybe you should also buy vitamin C in one gram tablets with bioflavanoids, try `now` brand, some organic selenium and organic germanium. These are the three kings of supplements that give your white blood cells the abilty to kill bacteria, virus, parasites, fungus, and detoxifies dyes, benzene, pcb etc.. If you are still reading this, and dont want to shoot the messenger, get up to date and buy yourself The Cure and Prevention of All Cancers, 2007, H R Clark PhD.ND. That will also keep you young and healthy for many decades..

Sounds like good reading accompanied by a large latte!

I know you are allowed to bring back a liter of booze to Thailand. I usually bring in a liter of good quality 100 percent agave tequila. If I skip the tequila, are we allowed only one bottle of wine, or is two bottles OK?

Waiting to hear a rant about how bad booze is for you now!

Same for me, only it's Grand Marnier.

Other than that, there's nothing in the states or elsewhere that I want or need that I can't get locally or in the nearest town or city.

Jingthing. Sometimes we have to move forward, as science unfolds its mysteries, and re adjust our thinking. I used to cook with enamel, now that we know that enamel leaks dyes, back to steel, (but must be 18/10 grade stainless cookware, otherwise extremely toxic nickel opens up organs to attract the cancer nucleus) Glass leaks gold, so that also got thrown out. My one a day coffee, well, that went, I dont want degraded bits of pituatory circulating, uncontrollably sending out their hormones 24/7. There is a cancer epidemic, there wasnt before, and new science has identified its causes and therefore its prevention. Why not follow it. You save some money on expensive coffee, and TEA..

I really can't afford to live forever. Cream and sugar?

Assuming I have the room and weight allowance in my suitcases, I guess I might also throw in some stuff that is available in Thailand, but marked up so much, such as:

all natural peanut butter (oil separated)

Grape Nuts cereal (less than 1/2 the cost in the US)

cream of wheat

A quote...

Dr Jane Armitage from the University of Oxford's clinical trial services unit said the £21m five-year study had given disappointing results for vitamin use.

"It was disappointing we did not see any benefits at all in either heart diseases or cancer."

As has been suspected for a long time, 'supplement industry' a rather large scam.

Better spend your money on fresh fruit & veg & get all vitamins etc naturally.

My Grandmother had coffee daily. She lived until she was 99 years old.

I imagine lightning strikes frighten you as well. Get a good helmet.

Loose cannon. Does not big pharma financially support these so called research scientists who say..no effect despite there being over 30,000 peer reviewed scientific studies showing efficacy of vitamins, herbs etc. Were the participants using natural or synthetic vitamins? What dosages? A Danish study showed beta carotene to have a negative effect on lung cancer deaths. They used syntethic (toxic) beta carotene, on aged, heavy smoking men, whose health was already compromised. More, by chance died of their lung cancers. The newspapers screamed Vitamins cause cancer. No doubt you were also concvinced, believing in the free unbiased and truthful press.

Hey Jing,

I back here now getting all my stuff too. Been drinking Peets coffee every morning (some afternoons too) as I staying where there're a couple in walking distance :o Will be picking up a pound or two of beans to bring back with me.

Like you, I also stock up on books, CDs, and DVDs from Amazon that you can't find in LOS. Also went to Barnes and Noble for to look around and picked-up a couple titles. Also Best Buy to look at electronics. Went to Gap also and bought a nice pair of khaki pants for $ 30...cheaper than similar quality in LOS and a linen shirt cheap too (made in Cambodia!).

Also bought my multi-vitamins and they're way cheaper here than Thailand.

Well, have about another week to enjoy the Great American shopping paradise...then it's back to LOS to enjoy my reading and listening at my leisure.

I'd love to buy books, but they're very heavy once you have more than a couple and the airlines are all cutting back weight limits.

I'd get a kindle and fill it up before you fly out.

Well, yes and no. On long haul flights I take an extra suitcase. You can fit alot of books in a suitcase and paperbacks aren't that heavy. And of course you can't download new kindle content outside the US.

I thought you could download new content to the PC, and although its unreadable on the PC its then syncable to the kindle?

I think you are traducing an organisation that has contributed outstanding work in the understanding of heart disease. The Oxford University Clinical Trials Unit is funded by the Nuffield Organisation (a charity) and completely free of any interference by the pharmaceutical companies. In addition, Professor Rory Collins, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Oxford who led the study which is published in the Lancet, said: "Over five years we saw absolutely no effect.

http://www.ctsu.ox.ac.uk/

Many people in the health services have known for years how the poor general public has been conned by the supplement industry ( like the pharmaceutical industry only worse) into taking horrendously overpriced "vitamin supplements" on the basis that they will miraculously make you better when in fact, the best that you can hope for is that they will do you no harm..............probably.

Anyone who eats a reasonable diet will get all the vitamins and minerals they need (with certain exeptions like pregnant women and folic acid).

Oh, and by the way, the history of coffee drinking goes backabout a thousand years - not as far as tea but nevertheless a millenia. During that time there has been no clear evidence linking either beverage with cancer. You really should stop worrying so much and try and enjoy life more.

Relax, have a nice cup of java and chill................

Yeah...I always take an extra empty suitcase with me for all my purchases. I am flying business so I have a little more weight allowance. Agree with Jing...paperbacks are not very heavy...and I like the tactile feel or a real book so I don't think I would like a Kinddle.

Regarding kindle, that is interesting that a user says you could use it outside the US.

I remain skeptical, though I did find this item:

Another fact that might be of interest to international travelers: currently the Kindle doesn't offer roaming outside of the US. You can, however, still get new content onto your Kindle if you are abroad: all you need to do is connect the Kindle to your laptop via USB, download the files from Amazon.com manually and place them on the Kindle via the USB interface (the Kindle appears as a storage medium to the laptop, like a USB stick or iPod). I might be testing this, when we go skiing in Austria this winter...

However, at amazon they will not ship it outside the US, and they only offer the wireless service in the US. I didn't look very hard but I couldn't find a mention of manual delivery of kindle content. When doing a sample purchase, all it said was automatic wireless delivery to your kindle. I like the idea in theory, but another problem I have with it is that it wouldn't have unusual and older titles. I just ordered about 10 books and I am sure not even one of them is kindled. Without sounding too snobby, its more for the best seller set (OK, that did sound snobby).

As I understand it, you can load other formats like prc and mobi straight onto your Kindle. If that's the case, then you should be able to download free books from

onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu

and

www.pagebypagebooks.com

and

www.books-on-line.com

Most of these are classics, but there are some surprisingly modern titles among them...........................might be worth a shot.

I use the service and download to my Palm Pilot..............small but handy.

A buddy of mine is back in the US now. I miss many things and as such, had many requests, so I had to prioritize. As I live in Issan, it was down to 2 things, a Husqvarna 18" chain saw, or a bottle of Crown Royal. My vote (and his preferance) was the bottle of Crown. Can't get that even in Bkk.

By the way.... maybe I HAVE been here in Issan to long....what's a kindle?

Kindle is an e-book electronic reading device marketed by Amazon where you shop for and download books directly to the device in the US. It is independent of your computer, in fact, they advertise, NO SYNCHING. If you couldn't get Amazon kindle content on it, the 400 dollar price tag would be ridiculous for expats. You buy titles as you wish for I think 10 dollars a pop, not bad.

Tagaa.... I totally agree on the CR... I miss the good stuff..... Maybe you can PM me when you get that bottle, I'll bring the nam khang..

NOTE: There was a Japanese Steak House in Patpong years ago (I think it's still there although it's been many years since I have been in PP) where the owner just sat at the cash register collecting the tabs... Anyway, just above him was a bottle of CR. I offered numerous times to buy it from him but his reply was 'no', an old friend of his from the USA had given it to him years ago and he was not going to open it. Other than that bottle, I do know the Duty Free shops at the airport sells CR....

I fail to understand how a forum called "Things expats stock up on" can deviate so much from the forum topic itself

The reviews are kinda mixed and it seems to be a classic first generation device. I'm waiting for the 2.0 version before I go ahead and buy one and by then the library of ebooks should be much bigger.

Love the concept though and can't wait until these things are working properly with all the issues ironed out and all books released in the format. I have boxes of books stored all over the world that I wish I had on a single device

Pocket books!!  There's three "friends of the library" outlets nearby the homestead close by Portland, OR that I always hit. Stock up on 50 cent pocket books, LOTS of them. A real shame, tho, when the USPS dropped their great price on the M-bag, $1.00 per pound for up to 60 #s via sea mail. I'd usually ship 2-4 bags worth back here.

Last trip was in '05, leaving again end of this month for a month. Happily I got my Eva Air ticket prior to 15 April so I'm still on the 70# per bag limit, two bags, so if I can resist Kmart, Fred Myers, Harbor Freight, etc, I might be able to bring back at least one bag full of books!
