the email below came to me today from what i consider to be a reliable source in pinang (penang) who acts as a visa agent

any inofrmation to verify, confirm and/or refute is desired

when the 'warning' becomes a refusal to issue another 60 day tourist visa,

we will be looking at the next major change

someone close to me lies at the end of the visa run issue starting 0ct 1 2006 when enforcement changed

his/her/its last 30 day stamp was issued right before oct 1

he/she/it plans to head to penang july 25 for thai tourist visa number 3 (in a row)

no airline reservation has been made yet but the fares minus fees are about 700-900 baht each way with airasia

EMAIL:

About the back to back tourist visa you were asking. Since 15th June

we have notice that all applicants with 3 tourist visa back to back are

being stamp a remark : The holder of this passport travels in Thailand

under a tourist visa several times which may result in the refusal of a visa

in the future. We have referred this to the Penang Consulate,

according to them it's just a notice, so far there is no confirmation that you will not

given one however,

nobody knows what's going to happen next. This week the person who are incharge

of approving and signing the application has changed.

So we'll see of any changes.

What does it means in the future? What future? 6 months? One year? 10 years? All the rest of the life? How long will I be not able to get another tourist visas? This has never been specified , and that make me to think that it's only bullshits, from some troll.

Astor, a ThaiVisa member talked about it in this topic. As far as I know, this is the only report of a member actually having received this stamp so far on this forum.

ha ha, i will see you the third time in penang. it take the air asia early morning flight on 25. want share a taxi to consulate or are you let all thing done by banana agents?

i also doubt we would get that special stamp there. and it dosen't matter if you are going by yourself our using an agent.

the advantage of using an agent is that you don't have to queue up (and thats all). the pro of doing it by yourself is that you have a least something to do in penang to kill time.

hey there!

kind of OT here

i am open to sharing a taxi to georgetown

i prefer not go to the consolate , i dont see the advantage

(i usually have no problem finding something to do :D no matter where i travel, but maybe i am missing out on something by not going :o )

BTW wouldnt it cost more and be less efficient to go to the consolate from the airport then go to georgetown then consolate (then georgetown) then airport? vs using the agent, or again am i missing something?

thanks and cheers

see you soon

Going directly from airport could save you 24 hours in Georgetown as you may make it in time to submit the day of arrival. If you go to Georgetown and give to an agent it will likely be too late to get in the same say.

Greetings from Penang. I just got my third back-to-back TV, no warning stamps or other bad voodoo. Actually got a receipt this time too: price was up to 110 ringit. My agent charged me a whopping 140 ringit for the whole deal.

Has anybody out there gotten a fourth or better back-to-back recently?

I've never had a problem with same day submission through an agent. They pick me up at the airport around 10am, I give them my passport when I arrive at my hotel in Georgetown and pick up my passport the next day with visa. It's always been an overnight affair. Going straight to the consulate makes no difference.

That's good news CyberViking. The going rate for most agents was 20 ringgit...has that gone up too?

I don't know. I haven't run into any other visa-runners on this trip with whom to compare prices. The agent I used this time (and the other two times) quoted me 130 in e-mail a few weeks ago, and that was *after* the price of the visa had gone up. But when I dropped off my passport at his office on Wednesday he told me 140. On the next trip--assuming there IS a next trip--I'm going to use a different agent. Besides the 30-ringit service fee, which I figured at the time wasn't right, I just wasn't too satisfied with the way he did business this time around.

me too, got it yesterday back. the fourth TV in penang, the last three in a row and the in first september last year. no special stamp.

i was going to the consulate by myself. when i pick up the passport yesterday i witness a foreigner (westerner) applying for his visa at 14:30. he was in company of an older asian lady who speaks with the staff there on the window in thai. that lady was more private looking or like a relative or friend of that westener then your typical penang visa agent. so with good language skills or even without that and a good story and polite manner you may be also to be able to for applying in the afternoon. so give it a try in case your coming later then morning to penang.

after that i was going to the air asia office, asking if i could change my flight from friday afternoon to friday morning. was not possible, they told me i can do that only 48h before.

i think you can do your visa run just with spending one night in penang, if your morning flight form bangkok arrives in time. pick up your passport next day in the afternoon leaves you plenty time to get your late afternoon flight with air asia back to bangkok.

anyone notice that the additional fees and taxes on your air asia ticket are becoming more expensive then last year or even a half year ago? am not talking about the 700 baht bangkok airport tax including now in the ticket price. flying out of penang they charge more too, is actually more expensive then leaving KL (if i check everything right).

for whom who may be interessted in my other cost.

i stay a malaysia hotel in penang road. http://www.hotelmalaysia.com.my they charge 86 ringgit for one night. 12 ringgit for 24H wireless internet.

last time i was in a room with a bad connection to the router, but i was no problem to change the room. this time i mention that before and they kind staff there give me also a better room for the same price then the standard room. the cleaning lady spotted that i bring my own sugarfree instant coffee, so they give me a new water heater, that one what was in the room allready was a little bit old. small pleasantries.

if you want use an agent, they take care that as well. after a phone call he will arrive in no time and collect your passport.

the hotel is not the newest but you get what you can expect for that price. rooms are clean and not to small. okay, the free breakfast buffet is not really worth to wake up early. lots of good and cheap local eateries in walking distance (in the real thai sense -only 100 meters), same as the georgetown nightlive scene. pubs with mash and bangers(spelling?) on the menue and different kind of international beers (12 -24 ringgit per bottle). a nice coffee shop, black canyon style too, just across the road.

taxi from airport to consulate 38 ringgit. taxi from consulate to town is 15 ringgit. if you are a sociable chap there are lots of other gentlemens in the plane heading to penang for the exact same reason, so maybe you can share a taxi and the fare for it.

If you arrive at 10 no problem. But not all flights do.

Fourth??? Cool!!! Sounds like the consulate in Penang is still visa-runner-friendly. Let's all hope the consulate staff continues to be so generous with the tourist visas.

Yeah, can usually do the visa overnight, which is what I did the first time I came down here. I stayed four nights the second time, and this time I'll have stayed a week (leaving Sunday). I like Penang; it's a good break from Thailand. Great food. I'll save the nightlife stuff for Thailand, tho' ... Penang's better for the daytime amusements.

My hotel of choice, too, has been the Hotel Malaysia. I paid 92 for my room this time ... smaller than the 99-RM-per-night room I had the last time, and without a refrigerator. Best wifi access is down in the lobby, where the wireless router is located. I've got a "very low" to "low" signal up here on the 7th floor, but it's still usable.

Regards to all.

Whoever said the guy posting about the warning was a wind up, looks to be correct. No wonder he refused to post a scan of this supposed "stamp"

I agree, but there must have a little bit of substance to it, 'cause even *my* visa agent in Penang told me at the time (in e-mail and on the phone) that he was seeing warnings issued with some of the tourist visas he processed. But only heaven knows what the real story was.

In any event, it doesn't appear to be happening now, so that's good!

a small world it is. i am just sitting in that lobby, surfing the net, waiting for my flight. get a torrent speed of 24 kb. had that in the room too, but only sometimes. in the 6. floor had a few disconnection. it's the walls that lows the signal, move your table more to the door.

and this time with an amazing sea view, a newer TV and a refrigerator. strange that they have that different prices, did you ask for a nonsmoking room or something like that?

you are right the 'nightlive' is no reason to come to penang. if you bring your computer you can do something else then 'exploring' the small penang night live and don't get bored. the food is always nice here, but i have no more idea for some day time activities. walk around everywhere in the city already, but if you stay longer of course you have the time to look at the whole island.

enjoy your weekend here. we are tourists. next time i will give KL a try.

ps. i just met the hotel 'own' 'visa agent'. he say he charge 200 baht for his service. and he arrange taxi to airport for 20 ringgit as well.

You guys need to get away from your computers and get out more.

Have any of you rented a motorcycle and circumnavigated the island? It's a fantastic ride....the best!

Did anyone take the cable train up the mountain and enjoy the breathtaking views from up there...and enjoy some local cuisine in the outdoor restaurants up there.

Did anyone drive or ride across the 8km bridge to Butterworth (the ride across on a motorcycle is a great experience) and enjoy shopping at the large mall there (it's away from the tourists and different)?

Did anyone visit the brand new Queensbay Mall?

Did anyone consider watching some movies at the 12 cinema complex at Gurney Plaza?

Did anyone go jet-skiing, banana boating or para-sailing at Batu Ferringhi and enjoy a dinner along the beach at sunset?

Did anyone visit Fort Cornwallis? A very interesting part of British history there.

Did anyone visit the 2 Buddhist temples (Burmese and Thai) and Sleeping Buddha?

Did anyone visit the Penang Museum or the War Museum?

Did anyone visit the Butterfly farm?

Penang is an interesting place to visit. There's no need to "kill time" as one member mentioned. There's plenty to see and do.

If you are planning to rent a bike be sure to pack your raincoat or poncho because from my experience so far, there are scattered showers on most days.

An agent would have charged you 20 ringgit to process your visa and 20 ringgit each way to and from the airport, so you've wasted more on taxi fares than you would have spend on an agent.

Why not just relax and let an agent take care of it? It's one of the luxuries of getting a visa in Penang.

have you ever been to the consulate? thats one of my activities in penang. yes i spend more money on it, but not that much. and maybe it's a boring thing. but let it agent abdul or mohamed do it for me so i have free time to visit the butterfly farm again? maybe fun with the girlfriend for doing something romantic. but alone.

and when i pick up my passport in the afternoon, is see that it is possible to apply for a visa at that time too, a valuable information.

explore the city in former visits already, in my best khaki dress i walk all over the town, visit the Fort, visit the museum, visit the chinese mansion, taking pictures of the harbour front and old colonial buildings, observe the locals doing thir daily live, feel the amosphere around the mosque when the muessin is calling. i agree, very interesting yes, i enjoy it, but do it again and again?

for myself, i am not so interested in beach activities, a motocycle accidents kills me nearly ones and i still suffer sometimes pain in different parts of my body that gets fractured. so i am little bit scared of motobike rides. okay that is just me that these thing are not on my TO DO list. and although i like shopping, why do it in penang. have been to some shopping centre there also, nothing special. but anyone a idea, what to bring as small present from penang for girlfriend, family, friends or those who are in a job for the co-workers? i am searching for nothing big expensive but with some sentimental value. just the kind of thing you bring 'home' from a holiday trip.

thanks for the tip with the cable car, i will do that next time.

going to penang is something i have to do, i must to do, because of the visa and not of free will. not really someting i want or like to do. so my pressettings are not focus on fun here. and i just can't wait to go to the country where i want spend my tourist live.

but you are right too, you can do a lot in penang. even at night time. i was night bar hopping already, you recommend the Soho pub - yes a nice place. but sometimes i prefer sitting on my computer instead of going out drink because i don't know what to do else. listen too the singer at the night bazaar??? mhm. on daytime is more to do.

and if you stay longer in penang you have the time to explore the island and butterworth too. you are 100% right, i didn't want sound like there is nothing to do in penang, but it become less if you been there before. the food is still always great. and live a slow live as a long time tourist i lost the abillity of spontaneous action a little bit and becoming maybe a boring person by myself. i also develop a addiction to the internet. so the few days or that one single full day i spend in penang is for me twiddle thumbs. but still nice for a change from the tourist live in thailand. not forget to mention the fresh air (if you live in bangkok) and the food again, i like the way how they handle and prepare potatos and the very friendly people live there.

all a little bit off topic for the visa question subforum, but still good to mention how to make of your TR visa run a touristic experience. combine the buerocratic necessities with holiday fun. and since the run to penang is such a hot topic here maybe it deserve a very own thread. there is so much more in penang then only 'agents' as your list demonstrate in an impressive manner. over all these stamps, stickers and paperwork we sometimes forget that there is live too and lot of us a tourists in the end. so do what tourists do.

How can you open this website?

last week i had a problem open this page too, but now it works fine so i place the link. don't know what caused the problem.

try restart your computer and visit the page again is the only advice i could give. not so much to see anyway, okay location map maybe interesting.

i never try a online booking there, just take the walk inn rate. so i can not guarantee if the online booking is up to date and works.
