Tonys used to have a real proper coach but that was discontinued a while back despite still being advertised on his website.

Don't know what a proper coach with toilet would charge but I doubt it would be cheap. Easier to fly ?

we had a very proper coach (the double-decker with arraoke downstairs) two years ago for our wedding in Nong Khai. That was 42,000 including a day of standby. Reckon 60,000 nowadays (just made this up according to the fuel prices that increased by about 50% since...) devided by 16 makes 3,750 each. That is about the same as flying and less hassle!

I will enquire next week how much it will be to Nong Khai and let you know by PM. The more on board, the cheaper for the individual! There are some 60 seats available, so we have still ample space.

Also if people fly its around 2,000 baht roundtrip for taxi fares. Plus there is the added pleasure of each others company! :o

Taxis from CM are easy and the hotel we will stay at is even walkable.

First class train is nice, but not a communal activity.

Bus looks fun, plane is second choice.

we don't take any responsibility for the physical and moreover mental condition of the fellow bus riders during and after this particular trip, spending many hours in confinement with some very particular board members...you know what I mean... :D

I don't know i'll look at the prices when Raro gets them. I'm thinking the bus and the train will be about the same price looking at the current cost of fuel. The only reason I brought up the train is that's easy, and might be cost savings I don't know. I'll try and get some prices. For a communal event we might be able to get our own car.

In response to Beg's question in the CM forum,

We have reserved 5 rooms in the Montri Hotel. It's a 3 minute tuk-tuk ride or a 10 minute stagger from there to Tuskers.

750 per night including a/c and wifi throughout the hotel.

900 per night if you want breakfast included

1000 per night if you want breakfast included for 2 people.

First 5 to pm me get the rooms.

Good to see the "regulars" going (nothing regular about you all....ha ha). See you there, will be a great reunion. :o

So has anyone booked with Buckwheat?

Yes, 3 have.

And don't be confused...you're not booking with me, I requested a block of rooms for Thaivisa members since we have stayed with them many times before and some Thaivisa members stayed there for the first party. It's a pretty good hotel and close to Tuskers. I'm just trying to help out visiting members.

Also, I asked for the rooms at the request of Begs.......Begs, I'm waiting to hear from you.

Sorry Buckwheat...were not at home at present, in Hanoi on hols. So not as regular on tv. But thanks for the effort on the rooms its appreciated. So am I correct in assuming that its nolonger just 5 rooms? The rate will stand for as many as the hotel will take?

ok folks....here's the deal!

There are two busses to chose from, a large one with the Karaoke compartment downstairs (which can be used for any other activity such as beer drinking as well....) and a smaller one that has more or less the same outfit in the top floor but lacking the very cosy karaoke room.

Rates:

I was not far off the mark with my guesstimate:

Large bus is THB 54,000 for three days and 65,000 for four days.

Small bus is THB 42,000 for three days and 52,000 for four days.

NB, this is still unnegotiated. We might get a better deal once we get serious with the booking.

I had a look at the bus today and here are some pictures:

Large bus outside:

Inside it has a cosy red plush upholstering, just the right thing for a true Pattayanian...

post-6036-1206614910_thumb.jpg

LCD screens for your favourite karaoke videos....

post-6036-1206614970_thumb.jpg

downstairs....there will be a table in the middle to place the beer cans.... :o

post-6036-1206615000_thumb.jpg

The loo....as by the rather small size of it I discourage the usage for some of the participants...

The small bus from outside:

naaaaa....you don't want this green, do you?

post-6036-1206615185_thumb.jpg

even though the seats have this VIP feature....they are green...

and once again....for emergencies:

AND: Special compartments for sobering out are available as well:

With 20 people its a very attractive deal

both look good

That is a very good deal, I think...let's have a look at the competition:

Air Asia:

Nok Air: (NB, this is Don Muang!)

post-6036-1206626879_thumb.png

Further, you still have to factor in the trip to the airport and back!

going by car: go and back is 1,600+ km, my Jazz consumes 8 litres on 100 km, that makes 128 litres * 30 baht = 3,840 for the fuel...not including the wear and tear and hassle with the driving.

So far we are 14, possibly 16, of us and still 44 days to go!

Further, we can also pick up our brethren on the way in Bangkok, Singburi, Nakhon Sawan, Tak, Lampang...

Anyway we are looking at six to seven thousand baht per couple. I think a bit expensive for a bus. The train is about the same and much more comfortable. I'm really not into drinking that much.

More info about the train here:

http://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm#1st%20class%20sleepers

It is 2,706 for a return ticket (1st class sleeper) according to this webpage. NB, this is from Bangkok, so you have to add the costs of going to Bangkok and back - about 400 Baht for the bus to Ekkamai plus taxi to Hua Lampong.

Advantage: You can travel overnight.

Disadvantage: less social, but each to his own...

Personally, I see problems for me to fit into the bunks as I am a bit taller than average...and no hot shower...

Your right, those bunks might be a little short.

I would not say the bus is not worth the money....which ever way you turn it, you end up paying six to seven thousand Baht per couple. By train, plane or bus...I for one consider the bus as the most convenient ride, but this is my opinion...

Your right, those bunks might be a little short.

Barry

that would indeed rule out the train for me...

Good news!

We spoke to another bus operator and they offered THB 45,000 for the double-decker bus, for FOUR days. This was actually the company we used for our wedding those days, the rates quoted above are from their competitor next door...Mrs. raro filed already a complaint for my confusion with me... :o

If it is still the 16 of us, then it would come down to some 2,800 Baht per person. Still anyone for plane or train?

Next step is, I will post this in the Bangkok forum and see if there is any response. The more, the merrier!

Since this thread has developed into discussion about modes of transport and the views of tv members can I suggest that a different topic is generated. This would only reflect the names+numbers+and pick up places for members who are travelling by bus ( red has my vote). Also how do we pay? Prior to the trip or the 1st day of the trip? Also if members do not make it at the last minute will they loose a deposit?

* mamanoodle and I are definites for the bus.
