Convicted molester arrested in Thailand

A convicted child molester who fled before being incarcerated 16 years ago and was arrested recently in Bangkok, Thailand, was booked into Pueblo County jail this weekend.

In March 1991, Alan M. Maxfield, 59, was convicted in Pueblo District Court of sexual assault on a child in a position of trust and aggravated incest.

At the time, Maxfield was free on a $10,000 bond. He was sentenced to two consecutive four-year prison terms, according to court records.

He fled before being imprisoned.

A bench warrant was issued for Maxfield in December 1992. In late October 2006, Maxfield tried renewing his traveling papers in Bangkok, where he was living for an unknown amount of time.

He was later arrested at the U.S. Embassy when a background check showed he was wanted by the FBI for unlawful flight to avoid incarceration.

In November of last year, Maxfield consented to be extradited to the United States, but he fought extradition back to Colorado.

After months of court hearings and a requisition by the state governor's office, Maxfield was brought back to Pueblo, District Attorney Bill Thiebaut said Monday.

"It's a story that is unusual from the standpoint you don't have a fugitive that's found in Bangkok every day," Thiebaut said. "We are very grateful to the assistance of the FBI, the state and New York governors' offices and other agencies that helped."

Thiebaut said the extradition process was paid for by the FBI. Maxfield is scheduled to be in district court in early June.

"The issue before the court now would be to execute a sentence on the conviction," Thiebaut said. "He was extradited so the sentence would be imposed and I’m sure we’ll look at other matters that relate to him. I don’t want to rule out that we may have other charges to evaluate."

Maxfield's charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution is decided at the federal level. Thiebaut said he was unaware if the federal government had made a decision.

"It would be a hurdle dealt with previous to his return. I have not talked with anybody in the FBI to see what they want to do . . . I got the impression that they would do something right away. Apparently everyone wanted to see him in Colorado."

Talking from out of town, Thiebaut said he did not have specifics about victims in the case, but knew his office has been in contact with them.

"We are concerned about the victims and we want to be sure they are part of the process if they wish to be."

Slightly different circumstances!

The only thing they had on Karr was a suspicion of child porn on a computer that was lost and for being a weirdo.

I cannot disagree with that!. A sad reality ..and Pattaya will dissapear!

I know I'd qualify. I live in Patong and I prefer studying thai and swimming to drinking with and bonking bargirls. Weird indeed.

This fellow's parents fostered children in the 1960s. I was one of them along with my sister (who never recovered from our three-year stay and died at 40). Abuse was happening then. How this family got away with this for decades is mind-boggling but they appear to have moved a lot.
Funny enough, Alan stopped his brother from doing something to me once and I've always remembered that. I looked him up intending to thank him, and found this mess.
So much for heroes.
