Bomb At Tescos?

Still no confirmation, checked with 5 people so far and we have a chain of calls running now... also nothing on the Thai national news 5 mins ago.

It should be noted that this whole day has been full of bomb scares and hoaxes. The Bangkok police report they have received over 1000 tips of threats and people reporting suspicious objects... so until we hear anything more it looks like this is just a rumour.

Does anyone reading this live in the vicinity?

Hopefully no confirmation by now spells good news.

Sorry if anyone was alarmed. That or spreading unfounded rumours certainly wasn't my intention but it came from a usually very reliable source. Hopefully though a rumour it will prove to be.

Thanks for checking.

so far the only new thing which is reported is :

Bomb-like object detected at Major Cineplex Rajayothin

January 3, 2007 06:27 pm

A bomb-like object was detected inside the Major Cineplex Building, Rajayothin branch at 5:30 pm.

Bomb disposal police were checking the object.

there are other false alarms:
Police are closing traffic on Rajdamri Road in front of Central World following a telephone call that a bomb had been planted in front of Central World.

A bomb false alarm near the Bangkok's China Town or Yaowaraj caused traffic snarls in the area at noon Wednesday.
http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingne...newsid=30023187
Teachers and students of Kingphet School on Phetchaburi Road were evacuated at noon after a bomb hoax was made against the school.

iTV has given some fact just now that ONLY TODAY at least 1000 calles were received about this or that bomb alarm.

so, definetely a lot of people now add up to histeria. if some employee is pissed off with boss or all kinds of other motives - perfect time to use this situation to take a piss !

now, here is an interesting twist of story about Chiang Mai bombing:

Victim 'carried mosque bomb'

The bomb that exploded at a mosque in Chiang Mai on Monday was carried by the victim, the commissioner of Chiang Mai provincial police said yesterday.

Maj-General Bandop Sukonthaman alleged that Nasis Ahamad, a Burmese worker injured by the blast at Chang Klan mosque, confessed to carrying the small home-made bomb to the mosque then accidentally dropping it on the floor, causing it to explode.

However, he said police had yet to charge Nasis, who is still in hospital, with any offence.

Bandop said police still had to investigate Nasis' motive for carrying the bomb into a sacred place. Villagers living close to the mosque, however, did not accept the explanation.

Bandop said he had reported his findings to community leaders, but the people said they did not believe a Muslim would bring a bomb into a mosque.

Hope i dont get in trouble for this one but with all the rumours my wife called her police friend yesterday and asked how bad things are in Chiang Mai as we have a takeaway biz on Loi Kroh and are a bit worried. The officer friend told her the only one that she knew 100% of to be real was a bomb detected and diffused in the night market on Chiangklan Road. That was not really reported as far as I know.

Please dont flame me but i dont know why the officer who has been a friend of my wife since school would lie . Other than this i cannot confirm through any other source.

I would guess that this would be the hand granade that was thrown into a Mosque very close to Chiangklan Road and was reported on fairly widely. :o

It can't be, as the hand grenade thrown into the mosque actually exploded. This bomb he says was found and deffused. :o

Could be a misunderstanding perhaps, JT? It's never fun to be doubted, but what did your wife say to you exactly?

Few Thais I know would know the word "defused" in English, and even fewer farang know the word 'defused' in Thai (bplòt chanuan rabòet ปลด ชนวน ระเบิด) - yes I looked it up. :o

Update:

An excerpt from a report in The Nation today:

"Hoax calls were also made to Satun's La Ngoo Hospital, Roi Et's provincial hospital and Chiang Mai's Tesco Lotus Super Centre.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police, Pol General Phinit Maneerat, revealed yesterday that there were a total of 119 calls from residents of Bangkok to the 191 emergency call since December 31 and 23 of them were related to bomb threats. The rest of them reported suspicious materials or packages left in public places."
