Thai - Cambodia Conflict Thai-Cambodia Tensions: Landmine Dispute Escalates
Photo via Facebook/ กองทัพบก ทันกระแส Amid heightened tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, fresh accusations have surfaced from the Royal Thai Army (RTA) accusing Cambodia of violating the Ottawa Treaty. This comes after another distressing incident where a Thai soldier sustained serious injuries from a landmine in the Isaan province of Si Sa Ket. The two nations recently convened in Malaysia on August 7 for a General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, where they negotiated a third ceasefire following recent clashes. The truce, spanning 13 crucial points, sought to assure peace and safety for border civilians. Despite these pledges, Thailand alleges that Cambodia sidestepped discussions on landmine clearance and efforts to dismantle scam call centres—issues viewed as vital by Thailand. Major landmine concerns along the border arose as three Thai soldiers were injured in a blast on August 9 in Chon Don Ao, Si Sa Ket. Among them, Sergeant Major First Class Thanee Phaha tragically lost his left ankle. His fellow soldiers suffered arm and back injuries, as well as damaged eardrums, highlighting the perilous conditions along the border. Following this incident, the RTA intensified its efforts, deploying more troops to identify and neutralise the remaining threats. RTA spokesperson Winthai Suwaree revealed the discovery of 18 PMN-2 landmines at the site, further alleging that these were newly positioned by Cambodian forces, breaching the Ottawa Convention—a pact banning landmine use. The situation further escalated with the finding of RPG rockets and grenade launchers near a supposed Cambodian encampment on Thai soil. These developments have prompted Bangkok to submit formal grievances to the President-designate of the 22nd Meeting of the States Parties to the Ottawa Convention. They cited recent explosions at Chong Bok, Chong An Ma, and Chong Don Ao as evidence of treaty violations. Acting Defence Minister General Nattaphon Nakpanich voiced strong concerns over Cambodia’s alleged deception, accusing it of misusing international funds allocated for landmine clearance while continuing their deployment. Cambodia, requested to address these allegations by the Thai government, has so far postponed further discussions. With diplomatic pressure mounting, Thailand is insistent on a transparent resolution, urging Cambodia to explain its actions both to the treaty committee and the global community. As tensions simmer, the call for accountability intensifies, shedding light on the fragile peace in this volatile region. This issue not only threatens regional stability but also raises significant questions about international compliance and cooperation in mitigating such humanitarian challenges. The unfolding scenario emphasises the need for concerted action and dialogue to ensure the safety and welfare of the border communities. With stakes high and lives at risk, all eyes are now on both nations as the international community watches with bated breath for a peaceful resolution. The cost of inaction is measured not just in diplomatic terms but in human lives and safety. As this story develops, the spotlight is firmly on the effectiveness of international treaties and the onus of adherence they enforce. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-08-13 -

EU Spanish town ordered to scrap religious festivals ban
The problem is that the "religious celebration" that is being held at the municipal sports center is the "lamb festival," in which more than 2,000 lambs are sacrificed. The city council has deemed that a sports center is not the appropriate place for it and that there are more appropriate locations. And since the municipal government is formed by the conservative Popular Party, in coalition with the right-wing VOX (analogous to Meloni's party in Italy, to put it mildly), the social-communist Spanish government immediately jumped in to attack them. In other words, it's basically a political issue in which a simple municipal health and administrative matter has been exploited to try to turn it into an issue of racism, xenophobia, and anti-Islamism. -
