george
ICT Ministry to launch "Cyber Clean" scheme BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plans to launch the so-called “Cyber Clean” scheme to cope with improper websites and contents shown on the Internet. ICT Minister Sora-art Klinpratoom said here on Monday that the ministry would count on 50 popular websites in Thailand as places where Internet users could give tip-offs to officials about the improper websites and contents as evidence for legal actions. Under the scheme, a specific toolbar will be created on the 50 websites so that people who surf Internet pages could click it and send messages or pictures of improper web pages or contents as tip-offs to officials of the ministry immediately. With the cooperation, the officials would be able to trace on-line wrongdoers and take legal actions, such as defamation, against them. He said the ministry would evaluate the performance three months after the Cyber Clean scheme is implemented. He believed the scheme would ignite the Internet users’ interest in sharing the social responsibility and complying with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s policy on addressing youth-related problems. --TNA 2005-11-
Jai Dee
ICT COOPERATING WITH INTERNET SERVICE LAUNCH CYBER-CLEAN PROJECT The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is cooperating with 50 leading internet service providers (ISPs) nationwide in controlling websites that are inappropriate for viewing. The ministry and the ISPs have signed an agreement under the Cyber Clean project. Today, ICT Minister SORA-AT KLINPRATHUM (สรอรรถ กลิ่นประทุม) presided over the signing ceremony. The agreement between the ministry and the ISPs will be a mechanism for creating a network of cooperation between the government, the private sector and the internet users. According to the Assistant to the ICT Minister, Mr. KANNAWAT WASINSUNGWORN (นายคณวัฒน์ วศินสังวร), inappropriate websites can be a threat to the internet surfers as well as the Thai society. Therefore, the internet users and service providers have to help monitor the websites and inform the authority of any improper webpage. The ICT Ministry will provide a channel under the Cyber Clean project for the users and service providers. Thus, if certain websites do not abide by the regulation, they will be shut down consequently. The Assistant to ICT Minister said that the Ministry of ICT has requested for cooperation from the internet service providers, website owners, and other related agencies, in which they will have to post ICT banners on their homepages. The banners will help the ICT officials in regulating the websites and deleting any inappropriate information. If we needed a proof... here it is. This "campaign" is not about pornographic stuff... But only "wrong opinion" about the governement's policies... Is it possible to take legal action, like defamation, about a porn pict ? Hum....

womble
Oh dear, these are troubled times, that means anything that is critical of the government on a website could have the site closed. Which means like it or not we will have to self censor ourselves or risk george having his site closed down. So even though we talk no more critically on here than we would about Bush or Blair, we'd better desist or else we'll get lumped with a defamation suit. We could also have our visa's revoked! TAWP
thaivisa isn't located in thailand so it isn't going to be shut down. They can only block the routing, but that's what anon-proxys are good for...

parryhandy
it will probably end up like china will , thanks to bill gates and co read here chinas internet pretty frightening stuff especially this bit "But at the same time, the picture of the world as seen by most Chinese internet users is heavily skewed in the regime's favor. Information showing the Chinese government in a positive light, or at least being responsive to admitted problems, is easily accessed. Critical information exists online, but it is kept at the level of specific complaints and relatively tame localized gripes. Only the most determined and tech-savvy internet users will succeed in accessing web pages about Chinese authorities' human rights abuses, or information relating to the Taiwan secession movement. On the other hand, information about Japanese atrocities, US abuses at Abu Ghraib, and belligerent vitriol supporting attacks on Taiwan if it declares independence are easily found in Chinese cyberspace. Thanks in part to this filtered view of the world, nationalism and xenophobia have found fertile breeding ground in Chinese cyberspace, while the pro-democracy movement has not.
