  1. us the USPS, or similar - no more problem.

Not exactly true. Only yesterday i got a small item worth US$80 by USPS had to go to phrakanong post office to pay 350thb duty and vat before they would release it.

  2. the price for the one I want (32GB 3G) is going down about B1K a week at MBK...by the time I need to go to HK next month, it will be fine just to buy one at MBK....

(but I also wanna buy the keyboard dock, an extra power adaptor, the Apple case and the VGA cable adaptor.....)

Actually you might be in for a bit of a shock. I know the MBK prices and HK prices quite well and over the last 10 days or so exactly the opposite is happening to both HK and MBK prices. Stock is getting very low at MBK.

in fact if you look and call some of the pantip.com classifieds. A lot of the store owners have now resorted to sourcing some stock from those guys selling 1 or 2 from the US.

HK price for 16GB 3G is now 7250HKD as of yesterday 2 weeks ago it was 6800.

2 Weeks ago ipad 16GB 3G MBK price 29000thb. As of yesterday you will be luck to find one less than 31500thb.

  3. Fedex were acting as your clearance agent hence the 800thb clearance agent charge. Now you are free to use any clearance agent u wish you don't need to use fedex. However to find an agent who will clear it for you for the same or less than fedex is more or less impossible.

Is it a rip-off yes. Do you have any choice - no not if you want your item.

You would have had the same deal with DHL as it is simply customs - not all items will be held by customs just a percentage you were lucky last time with DHL but not this time.

  4. My iPhone is almost all apps sourced from the Thai store; just a couple from USA.

The Thai iPad store looks comprehensive. I will continue to browse the USA store and then hopefully switch to Thailand to buy. Better than nothing.

Cool. Will stick with the USA store tho simply because of the TV Shows and Movies for rental and buy for Apple TV etc. Too much hassle running 2 accounts.

  5. This has probably been reported already; but I just noticed that the Thailand iTunes store now offers iPad applications! Good news, no more buying of USA store gift vouchers at inflated prices.

Is it the same tho as iphone apps in thailand tho. Not all are available on the thai store compared to the usa store.

Update on MBK prices today: 16GB 3G 31500

    32GB 3G 36500

    64GB 3G 41500

Prices have gone bonkers seems MBK and HK are running low on stock.

Just ordered a couple of 32GB as a trial using Entropay Mastercard, Combined with shipito.com new Las Vegas address (Apple will not ship to the CA, Torrance shipito address)

Total price (including shipping to BKK and "a" customs payment) if it goes through (They have charged the card) will be around 29000thb for 1 32GB 3G. saving of 7000thb over MBK.

  6. One example from one ISP does not set the standard for package quality, consistency and reliability nationwide. I'd say you got it all wrong. Most packages and ISPs here are still terrible and volatile (ranging from .5Mbit to 8Mbit download speeds depending on time of day on a similar package to yours. Additionally, many users still suffer from unstable and highly fluctuating latency to areas outside of Thailand, especially the US. Congratulations on striking lucky with True, though, you're part of the small minority.

I ditched True after using their service for half a decade after I couldn't take their lackluster and unreliable service anymore. The worst part about them is the customer service. They simply don't care nor do they know how to fix any of the problems the users have. I feel like a fool for having subscribed to them for as long as it's easily the worst ISP I have ever subscribed to, by miles. I'm now on 3BB and pretty much sit in the same boat as you. Reliable connection, great latency, no disconnects. All going through the same phone line.

If there's one thing I'd tell to people who are looking for ISPs it's that you should never expect the service that you pay for, but rather, feel grateful when you get it.

A lot has changed with True internet since you left 5 years ago! Customer service is efficient if you raise a fault they will have a engineer out within 24 hours of your call. True internet has now the most international bandwidth of any provider. In my opinion and I have used all the providers available to central BKK that nothing is better than true PREMIUM packages i cannot comment on standard packages they offer.

  7. I think the old Thailand does not have the international capacity for bandwidth is no longer applicable.

The reason is your ISP has not purchased sufficient international bandwidth or the package you have selected with your ISP or your line quality or your router/computer setup.

Lets take the 16mb True Premium which I now use. Results as of time of posting (You cannot exactly say Thailand has a problem with international bandwidth anymore I get these speeds 24/7):

    841226897.png

    841229378.png

    841230092.png

So basically I am on the fastest 16mb product available for the Thailand consumer and that is more or less exactly what I get worldwide.

Lack of international bandwidth do not think so, Poor choice of package and ISP perhaps.

I think a lot of complaints of slow speed is due to line quality. For example the old'ish condo where we stay on the 33rd floor has terrible internal wiring (The True line to the building is new and of excellent quality and not far from the dslam)

now initially the wire pair they used to connect from the building exchange to my condo was giving a very low SNR and getting speeds of between 5mb-9mb on the 16mb True Premium package. (Talking router sync rates here not speedtest.net results).

After some persuasion i got the building to put me on a different wire pair to their exchange. Went from the above sync rate to (Sync rate of 18mb and max capable of 22mb)

  8. QUOTE (alexfishbed @ 2010-06-04 21:23:55) @nikster the original Apple cover was very hard to come by- looked at a dozen stores till I found one- @3900 but well worth it

Arggghhhhh.... <deleted> it's $39 at Apple... oh well but 3-4 weeks shipping in the USA Apple store, so I guess they're totally out of stock everywhere. People must be making a killing on ebay wink.gif

Ipad official cases area available by their hundreds in HK.

  9. That is what I was afraid of......ipod won't accept my 'home ripped' mp3s [or other files]??

Ipod's accept any ripped MP3's you have.....

So, what's the procedure?? any special software I need?/

I thought that all apple products had to go thru itunes.

Just copy all your MP3's into itunes to catalog and sync to your ipod. It is the best way to keep your music organised full stop. Of course the Apple haters will disagree.

  10. I live in central Sukhumvit (Bangkok) and they cannot give me more than 3 megs AND that operates at lesser than desirable speeds during peak hours. Yet they can offer faster conections in Pattaya. hel_l Pattaya here I come

if I lived 500 meters away they can give 16 megs - go figure?

If your in a old condo (Old wiring). Get the building not true to use another pair of wires to your apartment from their PABX downstairs. I was on a a really bad pair of wires got the building to change it to another pair and went from 8mb connection to 21mb connection SYNC rate. Difference is night and day. (on 16mb premium true)

Post me your router stats: Line attenuation and SNR.

  11. No you cannot claim the tax back that is VAT Tourist refund.

HP notebook I would just fly to HK and get it there on air asia for the day. Cheaper than fedex and worrying about customs etc.

In Fortune there is a Dell dealer that is selling even Alienware Dell laptops at a premium but less hassle.

  12. On a Core 2 Duo 2.66 I get around 16 - 20 FPS. For a movie with 24FPS that's less than real time, e.g. more than 1 hour encoding time for 1 hour of movie.

Time to given in on that Macbook Pro i7 or imac i& nikster :)
