No, I think people choose a retirement situation that they think will suit them. If they assumed that inflation would stay low for years to come, it wasn't stupidity because the last dose of bad inflation was 40 years ago. People make their choices out of the experiences that have had during their lives up to retirement. Some may have travelled and so be more comfortable with living as an expat (I have been an expat for 40 years) so it doesn't scare me. Some people might love golf and so think living on a golf range is paradise, but then they get bored of playing golf every day. There are a million options, choices, and so work out well, some work out badly. You won't know until your final days on this earth which way your choices turned out.

PM Srettha calls for innovative ASEAN-GCC partnership
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Astute observation. he has learned some new words to say that suit any occasion...."sustainable", "Innovative" and other management guru-speak BS for you to play BSBingo with. Some leaders do things, get things done whether you like the results of not. Others talk a lot. Srettha is like Rishi Sunak with a bit of cash to splash. Next Srettha will be flying off to Ukraine to meet Zelensky for a photo-op in matching green fatigues. I tend to prefer doers over talkers. -

This could go either way from my perspective. One way is the Chinese way, super fast efficient trains with rails built at the speed of light. The other way is the Thai SuperSpeed train from BKK to Udon Thani that has taken almost a decade in building so far; is not yet near being operational; indeed it is further behind that it was when the project started and the maximum speed is now 50kph and the train stops at every station and has only one line. If I have confidence that the Thais would step out of the way and let the Chinese build the railway, then I would have full confidence in the future infrastructure of Thailand......but that won't happen will it? We'll get some festering sub-committee secreting money about their persons while the project never gets completed.

While we are becoming the land of a million hubs, how about becoming a PornHub (cool name for a business); a broker matching folk who are desperate to have sex with other people who are desperate to have sex; etc etc. There's a lot of money in sex, why not exploit it for the good of the poor in Thailand?

Thai neurosurgeon frustration over brain surgery delay
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Superstition is an odd disease. Religion, haruspicy, astrology, Kabbala; people find some relief or happiness in these mental diseases. I have little reason to disagree with what my local buddhists do at their temple, it's not my responsibility. But, if take an example, my wife became a member of a temple cult and gave 20 million baht away to the temple then it would become my business. In general I am very tolerant of superstitious views that don't harm me. The question being posed though is rather different insofar as this patient is possibly self-harming by delaying the surgery. His self harm doesn't affect or impact me in any way, so why should I even need to have any view about it as a single case. But suppose the case came where hundreds of thousands of patients were delaying necessary surgery and many deaths were occurring? My view would be that this is undesirable and silly. But what action should society take to prevent this rash of deaths due to a superstition. If you would agree that action by society to prevent self harm would be desirable, why would some intervention be necessary in individual cases? Is it a numbers game? For example if 250,000 people delayed surgery and 10,000 were determined to have died because of the superstition, would than be enough for society to take action and say 'crush' the superstition? Suppose only 45 died as a result of delaying surgery? would society as whole be justified in forcing people to have surgery to have it when the surgeon says, or to take action to crush the superstition (or religion). Of course I don't have any answers, but there is a huge relevance to our own time with COVID lockdowns and resultant depressions, suicides and so on; forced vaccinations which have poisoned some people. What was distressing was that science that we rely on to be impartial, turned out to have no answers, suppressed answers or political answers. Sorry for the rant; it is a slow news day. -
What type of cancer do you think you will get?
retarius replied to Chris Daley's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Funnily enough, I'm going for a melanoma biopsy next week. I expect the result to be negative. To be honest, I don't expect to die of, or to get, cancer. There has been no cancer in my family apart from my mother who died at 90-odd years old with pancreatic cancer. Of course, I might be wrong and get raging brain cancer tomorrow morning. I think I am going to die in a nasty motoring accident. -
Thailand-Russia relations remain strong, but at what cost?

On wanted trumped up charges about removing unaccompanied children from a war zone. Grow up will you? Read something about these issues instead of swallowing BBC or CNN propaganda hook line and sinker. -

I have enough of it, what are my options?
retarius replied to Confuscious's topic in IT and Computers
Go off grid. Build a Faraday cage in your house to make sure no Windows or other undesirable rays get into your home, then use the computer at the library for ll your needs. Buy a second hand 1988 folding Nokia phone....the best phone ever made.- 101 replies

Yes I've not seen a new hub announced for a few weeks now and was wondering if the economy had crashed or something. Never forget under Thailand 2.0, Thailand is the hub of all things digital in ASEAN and a few other things besides that we won't mention as it may cause embarrassment (eg hub of submarines; hub of English language educmacation (sic) and others too numerous to mention).

I am no longer young. I no longer enjoy doing what younger people do. I am happy to go when my time comes. In general I have had a healthy and enjoyable life with enough of everything, and I have little desire to stagger on to the bitter end. Indeed, if I were to have, or develop cancer, I would want it over quickly before the painful metastases begin. If my time were close, I would be tempted to arrange a holiday with my close family in Canada, Switzerland or Belgium and see if I could arrange a nice cosy euthansia party there.

I have never had an accurate prescription test on my eyes since living in Thailand for about 14 years. This includes having expensive diabetic eye checks in swanky Bangkok hospitals. What follows, is my story about what I do to get a good pair of glasses and why I think I cannot get a good prescription in the shops. Other people may well have had totally different and superior experiences and good luck to you if you did. I have taken to rifling through my collection of old, sometimes very old, prescription glasses, and finding a pair that feel good to my eyes. I then go to one of the big brand name chains and tell them to give me prescription lenses the same strength as the ones in the old glasses. This causes immense confusion among the poor staff, but my wife sorts it out. I always pick cheap frames, because why am I going to pay 20X as much for a pair of frames with some stupid brand on....anyway, it works every time. What do I think the problem with the one stop big brand shops in the high street is? I think the problem with these high street and mall brand shops is that their staff are not trained to a high enough standard do accurate testing. If you go back to the same store, or pass one in a mall, check out the staff and see how many staff last a month. In my experience this is almost none, all the staff are almost always knew to me. This may mean that most of the staff who waltz you through the array of testing machines have less than one months' experience.

Universal healthcare with one ID card set to expand in Thailand
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Yes I have an unusual and often misunderstood sense of humour. Sorry. For several years....about 10, I took my mother to here local teaching hospital amongst other places. They had a permanent (supposedly temporary) sign saying "Please excuse the delays we're re-organising." The NHS spends about 300 million a year (pounds not baht) on management consultants. I worked as a level 3 manager in a large US corporation for 20 odd years.....our CEO used to say, "if I have to employ the <deleteds> to make this decision then why should I continue to keep you lot employed, that's what you're paid for." I agree with him. My mother died a few years back, but I guess the sign is still there along with the army of dim-witted and witless management consultants. -

It's certainly quicker to see doctors and get tests and MRIs and stuff. And the people look healthier and stay young looking. What's 30 baht? About 60 pee? I support a point of care fee, but something more like 15 pounds or so (not to be paid to over paid doctors) but to be paid to the excellent managers and Minister's of Health who have done such a wonderful job with the NHS since I left UK's shores. -
Wow a totally unbiased piece by a totally unbiased man who knows intimate details about what a large construction magnate did back in the 80s and 90s. Who on earth would publish such crap....oops. I here I was thinking it was a survey of a couple of thousand people giving thoughtful answers to thoughtful questions.

Spending Money - Should I follow my Friends Advice ?
retarius replied to AlienBoy's topic in General Topics
Do what you like with your own money. The best strategy is to keep it under the mattress so that when the phone rings and a man you don't know, from a company you never heard of asks you 'Do you want to make a fortune today, send me 10 million baht" Then you can do it immediately from the post office. I know loads of people who have made a fortune this way, I haven't made a fortune because I didn't follow their advice. -
