  1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_Express_(film) American, but there were British people in the jail.
  2. I'll link into torguard, thanks. I used a service from Pattaya previously, but it was $100 a year and wasn't doing the job, so I stopped using them. Thank you for the info.
  3. Thinking about this, if I had just killed someone, I'd go to Sweden or some other Scandinavian country. I saw a movie in 1978 called Midnight Express about an American banged cop in a Turkish jail. I still have nightmares about it. Scandinavian jails are supposedly quite nice.
  4. I tried the VPN route but they, or another bank technician, told me they all US banks have trackers that can detect VPNs. I don't know if that statement is true, but it was true in my case. Which VPN service did you use, may I ask?
  5. A bit off topic, sorry.....but do you remember the movie, Fight Club with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. It premiered in 1999, 25 years ago and a special edition anniversary relaunch is planned. It is also being streamed on Disney as we speak....a suitable movie for kids? Who knows what is suitable these days...anyway the femme fatale Marla (Helena Bonham Carter) was great in the movie as well.
  6. I haven't seen any messages about changes to service, but then again, my brokerage account with them has a US address. I do have trouble with Vanguard though, they won't accept me logging on from here in Thailand. I have to call and get a representative to grant me access. It is a pain. They tell me there are too many scams from Thailand.
  7. I tend to think that any girl making a false accusation needs to receive what would be double the penalty for rape or sexual assault is. Eg if he would have had 7 years, she would get 14. You really have to be a vile and evil person to try to send an innocent person to jail for something that didn't happen. Restitution my eye!
  8. I'll look into it. Schwab used to have quite low fees when I lived in the States, but I always used Vanguard who are rock bottom.
  9. I suspect it is all part of a grand Tory strategy. Their time in office is over, they will now pollute the waters for the incoming Labour Party leaving the treasury empty, social service es and the NHS cut to the bone, and lower revenue combining. Starmer is as useless as Sunak in my opinion, but time will tell. I tend to thin Labour will be a one term government and when all the hope turns into dismal reality and Starmer does nothing for inflation, poor economy, war, ever lengthening waiting lists for the NHS, scandals, more cut backs to social services, etc etc and Starmer sits there doing nothing but passing tax cuts for billionaires and multinationals, then reality will dawn on people. Labour is exactly the same as the vile Tories. At the 2029 election the Tories will be swept back into power by blind voters with no memories. Tory/ Labour, two sides of the same coin, like a Victorian 'rotten borough'. The Poor will get neck end broth and the billionaires will get richer and richer and pay less and less in taxes. Labour should have stuck with Corbyn....he has some pro-working class policies.
  10. Great question....here's. follow-up can Thai's open a Charles Schwab account?
  11. I'm sure their response to the murder of a brother officer was an (tonguie-in-cheek) anomaly similar to the jailing of Mr Thaksin. Clearly the police don't give a hoot about killings done by rich folk.
  12. I've been there and talked to the girls, yes they are there to earn money, but frankly, it seemed to me, that most of them were relieved to leave the drudgery of Isaan; to leave their parents' home and to dump their children on their grandparents. They seemed to be enjoying a bit of freedom, the first for teenaged mothers. And who can judge them, or blame them? Not me anyway. Jim, in your previous posts you usually have quite strongly condemned prostitutes and the people that use them. It is difficult for me to see that you have actually visited Soi 6 and spent time canvassing the opinions and motivations of these poor girls. Many men try to 'save' them, but many of them don't wish to be saved in my experience.
  13. I agree. The air purifiers we bought last week have a PM 2.5 meter installed. Our air quality reads "good" whether even with the windows open, and the meters show zero particles after about an hour of running.
  14. Thank you for your post, we were thinking of moving our service to True, now I think we will not bother. I've never achieved anywhere near the advertised speeds despite having finer optics and stuff when I have tested with any provider. I guess 2 or 3mbs technically is 'up to 100mbs' which is advertised. Having The cable we had 15 years ago in 2009 was the best and had free TV. Our 3BB is fast enough for my needs, but seems to have frequent lack of service for 1/2 hour at a time which is annoying.
  15. One year ago I paid 70K for a Honda Click 160. I could swear the Honda dealer told n=me the 125 was no longer available (they didn't have any in the store). The had a slightly cheaper Hand Lead 140cc for mid 60Ks. I'd have gotten their hand of for a 125cc at 57K....I paid that for one 15 years ago.
  16. Not used any. When I need a taxi which is rarely, I hail a meter cab.
  17. Are they really Christian in terms of following Jesus' message and philosophy, or bible thumping bigots who would have condemned Mary Magdalen?
  18. I paid 20K at Bumrungrad. I heard of a friend getting it done for half that at Bangkok Hospital in Korat. Sorry know know about ultrasound vs MRI, but I think MRI is the gold standard.
  19. Time to buy air purifiers for all your room I suppose.
  20. It's probably a genetic thing and upbringing ie nature and nurture. Addiction runs in my extended (Irish) family, but so does caring forepeople, so perhaps the addictions have not destroyed the sufferers, most have coped with their addictions and managed to live decent lives.
  21. I was involved in addiction medicine 25 or so years ago. My company had a treatment for hereon addiction. The prevailing view of international experts is that addictions are a disease of the brain in which the 'reward' signalling in the brain is screwed up. I believed these experts, because of the experience with my own sons, who were certainly not neglected, and who, if anything, were over-indulged.
  22. Interesting. I didn't watch the video. My morning's review of UK and Russian news websites seems to indicate that while Ukraine is meeting EU and Nato people in Munich, Ukraine are evacuating on the orders of the new general, Aleksandr Syrsky whose press release claimed: "Based on the operational situation around Avdiivka, in order to avoid encirclement and preserve the lives and health of servicemen, I decided to withdraw our units from the city and move to defense on more favorable lines”. Avdiivka is 3/4s surrounded, and apparently the elite troops haven't stopped the rot. English language Western press generally are saying that this is not a Ukrainian defeat but use the old canard that Russia has lost so many men that this is a pyrrhic victory for them, secured, at great cost, only to give Putin something to talk about on the second anniversary of the war. Russia notes that Ukraine are withdrawing and unsurprisingly see this as a victory and morale booster for them, but don't, as usual, give an account of the lives lost etc. By their account there is now hand to hand street fighting. The old adage, of course, is that the first casualty in war is truth itself. Some one is spinning. Summary taken from various sources Independent, Guardian and RT.
