Answer the question....you can't. What about all the corruption in the US, still ongoing after two major meltdowns.....you're an idiot, a fool. Lose you r money by trusting banks if you want to. I won't I'am well diversified. -
Cheated by Savings-bank...

It depends what value you put on your time, doesn't it? I have always run my life so that I put a high value of my time.....I have servants to do the manual l work around the house and garden, because I can rent them at 500 to 600 baht a day, and I will not work for 5-600 baht a day labouring in my own garden. It is my choice, but I would rather sit on my arse and read a book than mow the lawn or whatever for 500 baht. I am fortunate to have the choice. With regard to spending hours on the phone or in the bank dealing with people who speak no English for 8000 baht....no thank you, I'd rather lose the money and not have the hassle. My peace of mind is worth more than 8000 baht. I do understand that poor people and this who have little money, do not have the option, and I am grateful that I do. but it came from working like a dog for 23 years in a large US corporation, so I don't apologise for it. Personally, I find it strangle that the only thing in Thailand that is actually cheap is labour, but expat fools choose to labour themselves, negating any advantage that of the cheap labour here. I would not live here if I was so short of money I had to mow my own lawn. -

Cheated by Savings-bank...

I am aware that not everybody gets scammed, but those that do are usually using mobile apps on phones linked to credit or debit cards. Personally I wouldn't bother about 8000, it's simply not significant to me, but it is the ball ache trying to get recovery. And I cannot explain to myself why banks would be the only institutions in Thailand that are not thoroughly corrupt. -
Recommendations for lab grown diamonds in Bangkok

The problem for me is that you cannot trust even top drawer retailers to sell you genuine articles. I hate it with tools, that Makita drill you buy, turns out to have a drilling lifetime off about two weeks. A mate of mine came here and bought a VERY expensive brand name handbag for his wife back home at a very well known mall in Bangkok. He was stopped at customs in the UK and they examined the bag, said it was fake and confiscated it. He showed them the receipt, but the officers laughed in his face saying he had been scammed. -

I try to do anything with ATMs in Thailand except withdraw from Thai accounts. It seems to me that all the scams come from using mobile apps here, so I forego the use of mobile apps as well. It is perhaps less convenient, but I feel better about it. Corruption is rampant in Thailand, why woudn't the banks be corrupt as well? -
What USA banks use IACH with Thailand?
retarius replied to jmd8800's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I'm trying to sort out similar problems. My bank account of 37 years in the US was suddenly frozen. It had been bought out by a Bank called Flag Star, or Flag Staff from Hicksville NY. There was no notification of the buy out, but the rules specified that if you had not visited the bank in person in the previous year the account was frozen.....so my alimony checks weren't paid out, my AMEX account wasn't settled etc etc and the credit card didn't work. After hours on the phone, my AMEX has been settled but they are still not paying out other stuff. I really would like to make a trip to US and sort out some system that would allow me to have my bills paid out of a US bank where I have pensions paid in. I don;'t want to be involved with paying taxes on transfers here, as all mo money is taxes in the US and I'm sure it will be a ball ache to try to get it refunded over here. Good luck. I'll follow the thread to see if anything comes us that came help me as well. -

Please enlighten me....maybe by PM. I have easy Alzheimer's and the outlook isn't that good. I might be looking for somewhere in the next few years. -
I think having $1 million (35 million baht in liquid savings) coulds be called well-off, but certainly not rich. I think rich is having maybe more than 200 million baht in assets, with more than 100 million in liquid assets.

Dom, captain of Wild Boars football team, killed himself at school in UK

I'm not sure there are any hard data on this, but I went to a private school and the bullying was quite extreme between the boarders and the day-boys on scholarships. There was also corporal punishment in those days. There were quite extreme rumours of abuse amongst the boarders....the rumours were centred on the senior priest who was in charge of the place, and were proved to be true in 1992 (he had died in 1968) when several boys came forward. I will not name the institution here but if you can scan the archives of the Manchester Evening News from the early 1990s there were several articles detailing quite shocking sad-maschisitc sex. If you PM me I can provide more details -
Women’s rights advocates exchange views on sexual harassment
retarius replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Usual horse doo-doo from the west creeping in here. I grew up on a council estate and knew several kids who were badly abused by their parents. Admirably they dealt with it and didn't grow up screwed in the head like today. Some girls got a thrill out of being wolf whistled. There is a big difference between violence toward women, and passing an unwanted compliment. Violence should be punished and bullies and repeat offenders should be punished extra hard, but asking a girl out on a date who doesn't want to go? Wolf whistling? My mother had very large boobs and was constantly walk whistled and ogled....it made her feel uncomfortable because she was a bit prudish, but her large breasts gave her severe cack pain. She had breast reduction surgery which solved the back and whistling problems completely, but she then complained that she felt unattractive and ignored by men because she go no attention any more (absolutely true) -
Opinion: Srettha shows true colors as military-backed stooge
retarius replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I don't much care who backs him. I care about what he does for poorer people in Thailand, and what he does about the deplorable education of the population here, because education is the only answer to the tough competition of the future. He hasn't made a good start in my opinion.....looks the same as Prayut did, but without the songs, all flashy expensive projects like land bridges and give aways disused as sexy digital wallets. No seems like a bum to me, could've put a tug tub driver in as PM and got better results. -

Thai woman calls justice after Thai man attacks her Belgian husband

A dozen activists....was it raining or something? The Thai people feel so strongly about Thaksin's malfeasance that a dozen anti-Thaksin people turned up. Maybe it is time to move on past the Thaksin era and focus on what needs to be done now, for the good and betterment of Thai people. Locking Thaksin up will not put food in any kids' bellies up in Issan, won't provide better medical care for the elderly, won't reduce crime, or improve education.....indeed it will achieve nothing except to act as a dummy for some of the toothless old grumps on Asean Now....a dummy to spit every time they hear the name 'Thaksin'. Oh and I forget it would gladden the hearts of those amazing dozen who defied everything and protested....a Nobel Prize for them?

PM Srettha forms team to clarify digital wallet scheme amidst confusion

Form committees and sub-committees, that Thai answer to every problem, never known to resolve any issue ever; but often provides more dough for those with their snouts in the trough.
