Queer Planet documentary ruffles homophobe's feathers
Baht Simpson replied to Jingthing's topic in Gay People in Thailand
It depends on what form that non-acceptance takes. Too often it leads to inequality, discrimination and worse. And for the nth time homosexuality is not a lifestyle, it's a sexual orientation like heterosexuality. I think there's little doubt that the right-wing are predominately the main users of anti-LGBT rhetoric,. -

I dunno. 1500 women, 20 seconds a time. That's only 8 hours and twenty minutes. 🙂 -
Do we actually need to Retire?
Baht Simpson replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
A chap in our firm collapsed and died on a train on the way to his retirement do. It was never an issue for me after that. Quit work at 50 and came here after two years planning. I didn't know how long it would last but it's 18 years and counting. No plans to go home. Being in a relationship helps. “The dead are on their way to work, grey limbs rubbing together in an open grave, stack on stack in the metal containers of car, tube and train. The grisly carriages are painted bright colors, guillotine colors of tumbril and blade, execution-bright. Each man and woman goes to their particular scaffold, kneels, and is killed day after day. Each collects their severed head and catches the train home. Some say that they enjoy their work.” ― Jeanette Winterson, Art and Lies -

British Pensioner Struggles with Frozen Pension in Thailand
Baht Simpson replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Incorrect. I'm a UK. tax payer and contribute to the U.K. economy in other ways too. As I'm not availing myself of any of the benefits of that tax I'm effectively subsidizing the U.K. resident taxpayers. All I'm asking for in return is fairness in the uprating of the State Pension. -

Well, let me respond to you Startmeup. Firstly, you'll see that I was responding to the comment that Robinson is just a "little rough round the edges." I aimed to show that he was much more than that, as his record shows. Secondly, I'm fully aware of what Wikipedia is, it's not mainstream media and isn't political, it's an online encyclopedia driven by volunteers which aims to present facts as they are known. Links are provided to allow people to assess the veracity of those presented facts and not just take them on face value. Those links are sometimes to mainstream media and sometimes not. Moreover they cover both ends of the political spectrum as you will see if you scroll down. For instance you'll see The Times and Telegraph in there. Therefore, even if only one of those things I highlighted were true (and I could havelighted several more) it would prove my point. I'm not so much suspicious of what he says but his motives, as I alluded to in a previous post. Ironically you post a Youtube video and ask me to believe what is said. I don't believe everything on there either, although I'm sure there are some that do. Also, your contention that people who take a different view to you are "daft","clowns" and "brainwashed" does you little credit. -

Horace Walpole? "We are inclined to look back to those August days and smile contemptuously at those who thought that 'patriotism was enough.' And we see very clearly now that it isn't enough." -

He may be right in some of the things he says but no, I don't trust him to be the person with the solution. I question his motives. If that had been in the right wing press you would have lapped it up, as most of your peers here do. We all have to base our views on some media. I know which ones I trust the most. -

Ah, the old "My enemies enemy is my friend" routine. I know nothing of the Sikh relationship with Robinson but this is rather enlightning. Apparently the Sikhs aligned themselves with the EDF but couldn't take the racism. Robinson tried to influence the Sikh youth with anti Muslim films. Seems like they're friends again now. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/sikh-youth-uk-muslim-film-university-tommy-robinson-edl-sex-groomers-islamophobia-racism-a8002526.html?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR1KMXehLUhyUtMvSEFZrCsgfaAK1Hgaa_mrOphlA-2isT1M91Fhndz5DQ0_aem_AeBU_DgYaNmRqAsGU2fhNAHSquxZs32p3InpFKuzceqte90ttdtJ7WMAc5UHr-gJVn8kM0t7PqWmtASvitlWzysK -

British Pensioner Struggles with Frozen Pension in Thailand
Baht Simpson replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I am aware that, at the time of the previous general election, the Labour party had included unfreezing of frozen pensions in their manifesto (I think that is correct). I therefore responded to my MP as below : Dear Mr xxxxxx, Thank you for your response. It is, of course, disappointing. At the time of the last (I believe) election the Labour Party promised to unfreeze pensions for those pensioners living overseas in countries that do not receive uprating. I have to ask why that promise has changed ? Why are we no longer deserving of this ? The fact that some pensioners are still receiving the level of pension that they had when they left UK many years ago is, to be fair, disgusting. You say that this "this is a difficult issue". I would have to disagree. It's a very simple issue. Make pension uprating the norm for all pensioners, no matter where they reside. What could be simpler than that ? We have paid our dues in UK, many of us, including me, for more than 40 years, and now we are penalised ? Why ? You say that moving overseas is voluntary decision. That is so, and so is my choice of who to vote for. I'm sure that the implication is clear. Regards, Tony M The MP has not responded Angela Rayner is the Shadow Deputy Leader and probable Deputy PM in a few weeks. It might be appropriate to remind her of her words from 2016. 'The cause is also being supported by shadow pensions minister Angela Rayner who described frozen pensions as ‘unfair and illogical’. "Over 550,000 people are losing over half their money they worked hard for. The fought for their country, they worked hard, paid national insurance and paid tax, it is unjust and something has to be done,’ she said. ‘It comes down to decency…it is disrespectful not to [uprate pensions].’" https://citywire.com/funds-insider/news/breakthrough-for-frozen-pensioners-living-abroad/a877900 Oliver Letwin, the Tory minister agreed and proposed a partial uprating. But that would be a disaster for several reasons. There's no excuse for any of this but I won't hold my breath on anything happening.
