  1. Everything perfectly normal here, its the everyone else outside Thailand that are still stuck in the matrix and think they know what normal is.
  2. I digress a little but the debt is often with the evil loan grannies, lending to so called friends and charge illegal interest then harass them constantly when they cannot pay. That's not a friend, should be locking these people up. Hopefully with the small steps on corruption these so called friend lenders will be caught out along with the sharks. Often the start by borrowing from a greedy "friend" because they are desperate and that friend then harrasses them to borrow from loan sharks to pay them. What's worse is that so many are at that its almost seen as normal to kick someone when they are down and make a few baht at the same time.
  3. Curious to know if any cover is void if smoking cannabis, any changes since it was legalized? Similarly alcohol it seems can make some claims void like losing a passport whilst drunk. To be clear, I am not talking illegal activities like drunk driving. Given a lot of holiday makers are under the influence about half their trip is that like not having insurance? Anyone with recent insurance could check small print on this.
  4. Its interesting on the tabien bahn, I suspect in most cases the PR holder is not the owner of the house so its not their tabien bahn but someone else's. Whilst it's likely easy to get a copy of the page to take to immigration or the police station getting access to the actual book is not a given, house owner may be away for long periods of time so its not something that a PR holder generally has access to. I was already in a yellow book when I started the PR and the police used that to set up my red police book, I've done a couple of renewals and nobody has every asked for the blue house book in the 8 years since. That includes CW, re-entry, immigration and work permits, never been asked for blue house book.
  5. Also got rid of three local plants grown from seed, no flowers and no balls after 6 months. Even tried to flip them with 12/12 first then total darkness but nothing at 6 months. I see lots of these around town outside mom and pop shops. Also switched to auto strain seeds and on second grow. Should be about ready to crop in a about a week so 80 days from seed to cut, then about a month dry/cure. Still learned a lot growing them though.
  6. I had a similar problem at a northern office, point blank refusal, "its impossible for farang to go on Blue book" they said. In other cases where they knew nothing of PR I had to call CW and put them on the phone to the person who knew nothing about it but they would not even consider talking with CW direct. I was put on yellow book but they would not put me on blue. Never needed to show the blue book ever to anyone at that time thankfully, its not my house and I just stayed there, I did not own the book and it owners may not have been available to give me it had I needed it even if they did. Police giving the red book were happy with yellow book entry. Hard to tell what the blue book entry is used for and by whom compared to a yellow book that shows place of residence. In the end Bangkok seemed much easier option, finding someone to put me on their book but again I've no access to their book regardless.
  7. Could not be bothered watching the video, but the notepad discussion I'll throw in my tuppence. I'm generally a two monitor and separate keyboard and mouse approach but also use a notepad, using the laptop to focus on work and the notepad for tangent ideas that can guide that work. I could do it on the laptop just as I could pour my coffee into my cornflakes but some things are better separate. Everyone taking laptops to meetings just to make notes, they are pretty much guaranteed to get nominated to take meeting minutes and quite rightly so.
  8. Quick update on my super cheap approach. If you are looking for higher yields you should go with much better lights. I do not smoke much and now have more than I smoke so high yield was not an issue. Samsung LM281B Quantum LED 2000 baht This is very low but seems to do the job. Did not add much to electric bill. tent 80*80*120 1700 baht Cheap fans 100 baht each. Soil perlite mix 50 baht a kilo, airflow pots 70 - 100 baht. I needed to change ph of water so a couple of drops of ph changer to water - 170 baht for up and down. Two bags of grainial based fertiliser, 60 baht each will likely last forever and one liquid 150 I drop in to water. I'd say this is a very amateur's causal grow setup, that I have really enjoyed and learned with. I started with 5 random lazada seeds - not what they said they were. 3 looked like thai squirrel - grew easily not much maintenance but never flowered and I got rid of two of them and moved the last one to window with a lot of light. 2 were something different - really struggled to grow early on, one under light and one on balcony, the balcony one faired better, but end up with about 15 grams each dry after 3 months. Dried and cure, I also did partial amount with water cure. The smoke is smooth and light alert buzz but also sometimes hits very hard after few smokes and need a wee lie down for a bit. One seed from flower purchase thai version of gorilla (its not the same) - small plant low yield again but does the job, heavier body hit. None of the above showed any signs of decent breeding, so I would highly recommend paying for decent seeds. I picked up three from royal seeds, easy one, royal dwarf and one other, two made it through early stages. About 7 weeks now in the box, good set of flower on both came on at week 4 and looking healthy. They say 10 weeks to ready for crop, I'm guessing closer to 12 based on my cheap ass setup. Great guy at Your highness ratchada also gave me some seeds for free, bit of hit and miss on germinating but have two really healthy looking plants now at about 4 weeks, no flower, no idea what they are but likely autos. Overall this is just a cheap fun set up for learning alongside something low mid shelf to smoke, if you are okay with that its workable. Get better lights than I, if local seeds just stick them on your balcony, if purchased seeds start with easy and quick auto's under light.
  9. The gambling is often just a gateway entry for the loan shark business's, with high interest rates, threats, violence and people losing homes and life savings. A top down gambling focus approach is a start but its the money lending side and forcing people to chase the debts through gambling that also needs a massive focus. They are so connected and part of the same overall corruption model.
  10. Seems simple, let your wife buy it for her if she wants and can afford it. If your daughter is working perhaps you could share the costs with her if the money is not a concern for you. At 17 the sense of working hard and earning something could be of value. Curious though to what extra value a 35k phone would offer over an 8k phone to a 17 year old.
  11. Have a chat with him, make him aware of the risks, explain its very common for westerners to lose everything. Its a gamble and you should never gamble what you cannot afford. People make their own mistakes, some of us repeat the same mistakes but he can reduce risk. Be ready to walk away at any point, dont register the marriage without prenup, consider why get married at all. The relationships I see working is usually where there are no money worries at all , the girl knows she is on a good thing, is happy and does not mess it up. To be fair though I know more horror stories than success stories but some do work.
  12. I caveat this by stating I know very little apart from my own experiments over last 6 months. It was rolled out without education on the topic unfortunately, my kids teacher told all the kids its a bad plant <deleted>. 6 plant household limit, pests, nutrients, ph, too much sun, too much water can all impact survival rate. Out the ones that survive half will be male or hermie, more if outdoor. A lot of seeds they pick up likely the same source so lower yields and quality. 6 plants whilst households learn and experiment is very low. Then you have a long duration on many Thai strains. I have what looks like Thai squirrel on my balcony, 6 months and no sign of flower either male or female. I even tried to flip it with controlled darkness, someone mentioned as long as 18 months. On top of that each strain has different medical use so many growers have no idea what strain they have or its medical value. Not to mention drying and curing. Unless they have knowledge or a community group supporting them almost none of what they grow would be sellable. Educate them, give them decent strain auto's to practice with.
  13. Is smoking banned in your condo? If not what is your concern? I get that sometimes it is just best to stay off people's radar. Growers would use carbon filters for smells for example. If your weed is water cured "stealth weed" a lot of the smell and taste will be removed but the thc remains okay. Edibles are another option.
  14. Its an annoying quirk of the process. Bottom line is you need to find a Thai or someone else who owns a condo to add you to their book. Many landlords are not keen on this at all so better to find someone you know that will help you out even if you are not actually staying there. Thailand its very common for people to be registered in one province but live and work in another but generally everyone is registered at a house in order to get medical coverage etc.
  15. I was thinking a standard 200 to 500 baht and not a bumped up tourist fine. That's likely way off but the publishing of fines and the receipt remove the opportunity for them pocketing the money, once that's done why would they even waste their time stopping people unless its a 3rd party group as it was with littering who likely get commission? The amount and the deterrent factor would have to be sorted but from what I can see the idea of publishing clearly worked with the cigarettes scam.
  16. Many people will remember the cigarettes butt hustle particularly when they had no bins on sukhumvit, after a lot of complaints they made it legitimate with the following and introduced very visible warning signs and bins, that seems fair enough to me. You could sit outside bully bar with a few beers for a couple of hours and watch 5 or 6 groups going into the little booth, because it was clear there was very few arguments, almost jovial in the approach and the tourist had a story. “A person caught littering can be apprehended and ordered to pay a fine not exceeding 2,000 baht. The amount is up to the discretion of the inspector. After paying the fine at a BMA booth − which should be located in every Bangkok district − the inspector must issue a receipt.“If the offender refuses to pay the fine, we can’t arrest them. " This is what is needed for vapes, bike licences etc. Publish the on the spot fines and remove the extortion. I just noticed the "can't", I believe this was because the people in the booths were inspectors working for the government and not actual police, I guess they could call they police and they could arrest them but maybe not.
  17. Likely the key thing is whether the money is going towards things for your son and not being spend on booze and things for the mother. Her asking for more has impacted your trust levels, is there someone else who knows the situation that you do trust? Perhaps suggest no extra money but you will increase your share of school fees provided you pay the school direct. The amount really depends on what you can afford and are comfortable with, half the time with separations with kids involved the arguments are about not giving her money and not the amount in itself. Separately you could consider a hypothetical situation where the kid comes and lives with you and she sends you the same percentage of her income that you send her. If you needed a nanny, a bigger space, clothes they grow out of fast, school extras, transport to school, occasional holiday etc I suspect that money would not go very far at all. Is that an option, would it be best for the kid, would that be great for you? Look at that honestly and it may give you a slightly different perspective. Avoid being blackmailed though, if you give in based on threats it will happen again and again.
  18. No landline and no unsolicited calls. Annoys lazada delivery man a bit but if the post office can deliver me a parcel without a phone call check so can they.
  19. Still confused regarding what they are saying should have legally happened. Should she have been arrested with a court case date set? Would that be more problematic and costly? Can they legally give verbal warnings and let people on their merry way? Do vapes allow for police discretion regarding an on the spot fine, I believe after years of hustle they did that with littering and the hustle stopped and tourists paid the fine without the feeling of been hustled. Minor misdemeanors like a vape really should not be wasting police and court time, by not allowing a quick efficient option it is these things that become a catalyst for corruption. Hopefully this will be clarified. I don't agree with the vape law and makes sense to me that its dropped, some people may even question if the reason its illegal has corruption as a root cause, it would be interesting if this story goes down this rabbit hole to deeper root cause.
  20. There has been talk around meth re-education centers, though not seen any stories regarding success of these. Gambling addicts do need more help and for it to be treated properly as an illness. Their actions defy logic and likely this poor woman has reached the end of her tether with her husbands sickness destroying their lives. Loans, loan sharks, theft and lies thrive. I know someone with no job, no income (both as a result of gambling) and still 7 different new sharks were lending her money followed by threats. There is no out. Seemingly extreme measures are necessary to protect addicts from themselves.
  21. Be careful what you ask for. What should happen if you are caught with a Vape or no ID? Fairly sure there were other cases that went to court for the vape in public offense. This seems reasonable. Held overnight or until bail posted, court case, fine (small and a warning), legal fees, missed flight, Visa runs out as you wait for court case so deported at your own cost. 20k sounds very cheap in comparison. Even though the fine might be very low the threat of the above hassle is what creates the hustle opportunity, hey here's an easy, costly but less costly way out for you. Small fixed very publicized fines with receipts would help.
  22. Its an interesting one as it was an official police check point. There seemed to be more stop and searches as part of a crack down on meth amphetamines, if you are caught carrying you will likely be the one offering a small bribe. Not heard of anyone yet getting fined for carrying weed though smoking in public opens you to a hustle. Vapes are a grey, area walk 50 yards on sukhumvit and you could pick up 50 people for possession. They don't though but tourists with big pockets are fair game it seems. Local expats if opted to go to court would likely just get a few hundred baht fine and a warning but as someone else mentioned its the risk and time factor that it is actually easier to pay a small gift on the spot, if they had fixed on the spot 500 baht fines this would remove the hustle potential. They know tourists will not take the court risks so have been targeted in the past. This one seemed to be a combination of no ID and a vape, the amount may have been far too much but I suspect many people would much prefer to pay a small fine and go on their way. The publicity could go both ways, might reduce the hustle but could also reduce that small no hassle opportunity of on the spot payments.
  23. Interesting from UK government website. Post-mortems are normally required in Thailand following the death of a non-Thai national. Exceptions may apply if the death occurred in a hospital unless the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, sudden or violent. Post-mortems are carried out by forensic doctors. Cultural or religious sensitivities may not be taken into account. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office cannot stop or interfere with the process. During a post-mortem, small tissue samples and organs may be removed and retained for testing without the consent of the next of kin. You will not automatically be told if this happens.
  24. 500 baht seems fair, not enough to imply she's doing it for the money so he gets a slight sense she wants to come over and for him its just enough to say this is some sort of exchange and does not come with any sort of relationship baggage. I really enjoyed today, here treat yourself to a nice lunch or get a taxi back I want you to stay safe rather than on that bus. I thinks its a fairly common exchange when wealth levels are different, nothing to see here.
  25. Local chemist in Bangkok had a big advert outside its shop for Melatonin so likely available in many chemists over the counter.
