  1. On the issue of the word "Khek", this is what I had been told. Khek is a word used to describe a visitor. The reason it is used ONLY to describe people who look Indian (Nepalese, Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshis, Malaysian and Singaporean Indians, Turbaned Sikhs), is because initially Indians were invited and treated as visitor a long time ago to trade with the Thais. However a number of then stayed back and started their business here, bought land and brought their families over.

When Bangkok started developing as a city, they found that a lot of these Indians had owned massive amounts of land around the Sukhumvit, Silom and Sathorn area. They became instant millionaires.

What I was told is this was the reason the Thai's changed the laws and stopped allowing foreigners to own land after this point. All these Indians who had already owned land were called "Khek" as an offensive term to describe them "Visitor who never left". Eventually the term "Khek", was used to describe anyone looking Indian.

Right or wrong, I don't know. This is what I had been told by a couple of people, it sounded feasible to me and I stuck to it.

  2. To be honest, Africans & Indians, also know as Kek by Thai, are not well look upon in Thailand. This is a known fact. Anyone want to dispute this?

No dispute. Thai's are one of, if not the Racist group of people I have encountered thus far. Just look at how you treat your own Thai citizens just because of their skin color. You have made this country so paranoid. You've even gone as far as changing the portrayal of Lord Buddha, I honestly believe he looks like a hairy Indian guy, but you Thais make him out to look like a Chinaman.

I believe the dislike of the Thai for the Indians stem mainly from jealousy and lack of originality on the Thai part. Almost everything Thai came from India, their Buddhist religion, The Thai script which came from the Brahmi, Thai names, culture, etc. If the Indians had not sent over a couple of chapters of the Kama Sutra, all those hundreds of years ago, I rather not think how your skin trade would look like today.

Today, behind Malaysians, Indians make up the second largest tourist to this country. When you had all the riots and your tourism industry was going down, your government and Tourist ministry were pleading with wealthy Indians to come to Thailand. And they did.

However Thai's have no concept of gratitude. You go around with this misconception that every foreigner that lands here owe you money. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. You feel you have the right to show control and abuse people because of their color, creed and ethinicity and think it is justified.

How do you think people look upon Thai's abroad?

    Grow up.

  3. Seriously, does Thailand really need a trouble maker like Veera? I say let him enjoy the comforts that come with a Cambodian prison stay. Let's throw him a big welcome home party in about 10 years. Hopefully he should have a much different outlook on life after serving as a Thai comfort woman in a Cambodian prison for 10 years.

  4. I live near MaxValue, and all I can say is I go there to do my shopping early in the morning or just before midnight. Given it's proximity to the new Airport link, the parking lot there is a nightmare getting in and out. I'd rather just drive to Seacon/ Paradise park.

The restaurants at Max value look decent and clean enough, however the parking situation just throws me off from going there. Good luck, sorry could not be much help.

  5. My son was born at Samitivej Sukhumvit. Excellent service. I would however recommend that your sign up for the birthing package (Natural birth or C-section). It will cost you a lot less(half the price) as compared to ala carte birth.

When we asked for the package. the doctor we had gave us some BS story of it being only for the locals. We threatened to move to another hospital that offered us a package and he signed us right up.

The package is a fixed price deal that covers everything from medication, room, nursing care, Dr's fees and also pediatric charges.

  6. Stroller will be helpful moving around the BTS stations and walkways (if you're planning in exploring the MBK, Siam and Central Chitlom area. I would not recommend walking long distances on the side walk.

Most major department stores have a fairly safe indoor play areas for kids. Just ask around and you will be able to find it.

  7. Here is an idea to make the plastic bags competitive to the condom. For extra protection, try two plastic bags and Tiger Balm. Step by step procedure,

    1.Slip first plastic bag on,

    2. smother with Tiger Balm,

    3. Slip second plastic bag on

    4. PARTY TIME

    5. If any partner feel mild cool burning sensation, change plastic bag.

    a. Change inner bag if the guy feels the effects of the tiger balm

    b. Change outer bag if she feels it.

    100% Safe

Note: Tiger Balm can be replaced with any other local Thai eucalyptus balms.

  8. Thai Highway Code

    English Version

    2006 Revised Edition

Motorists should exercise due care and attention at all times and avoid unnecessary distractions, particularly from other occupants of the vehicle. We recognize that there will be times however such as when your answer your mobile, have to speak with the wife/girlfriend next to you, play with the kids to keep them occupied, drink a beer, eat, have a brief nap, change the DVD etc when this will not be fully possible. At such times we ask you to be extra vigilant.

Huh! Seriously, while driving. And the highway code recognizes that there will be times that we have to drink a beer and have a brief nap while driving!!! They suggest be be extra vigilant during such times. <deleted>. Is this some translation error?

  9. dominique355 has made the point that seems to have been missed by most. Initial accident reports stated that the girl had just returned from America. It is quite possible therefore that she already has a drivers license albeit for another country. Of course this would not be valid in Thailand because of her age. I do not offer this as an excuse for her actions, just something else to consider amongs all the other factors surrounding this very sad incident.

If I'm not mistaken, in the US if you're below 18 you get a drivers permit that requires an adult to be in the car at all times when you drive. Even then you're not allowed on the Freeway.

In this case she did not have an adult in the car, plus she was on the tollway. I think this is a moot point.

However I do agree with the article from the Nation.
