  1. Massive Quake Rocks Myanmar, Sends Shockwaves Across Asia Yesterday, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar at 1:20 PM, with its epicentre just 12 km from Sagaing. The tremors affected key regions in Myanmar and spread panic across neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, India, Laos, Thailand, and China. Rescue teams are in full force, working tirelessly to find survivors and evaluate the widespread damage. The earthquake has left a trail of destruction in its wake, impacting many of Myanmar's most iconic areas. As the magnitude of the disaster unfolds, regional emergency services are on high alert. Much of the news seems to have focussed on Thailand and Bangkok in particular, lets take a moment to recognise the devastation that occurred in Myanmar. Myanmar Declares State of Emergency The earthquake's epicentre was near Sagaing, close to Mandalay, at a shallow depth of 10km, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). A powerful aftershock of 6.4 magnitude followed just 12 minutes later, worsening the devastation. Myanmar’s military-led government declared a state of emergency across six regions, with authorities warning that the death toll is expected to rise. Major General Zaw Min Tun, a military government spokesperson, urged blood donors to assist hospitals in hard-hit areas, including Mandalay, Sagaing, and Naypyitaw. The Red Cross reported that damaged power lines were hampering relief efforts, leaving some areas inaccessible. The earthquake caused a 90-year-old bridge in the Sagaing region to collapse and damaged key highways linking Mandalay to Yangon. In Naypyitaw, several religious shrines were destroyed. 3. Thailand has long stood out as one of Asia's top retirement destinations, and it’s easy to see why. With more than 80,000 expatriates calling it home, retirees are flocking to the Land of Smiles for its mix of affordability, high-quality healthcare, and laid-back lifestyle post-retirement. Why Thailand is a retirement favourite Retiring in Thailand means your money stretches further. Many expats enjoy a high quality of life on just US$1,500 to US$2,000 a month. The Thai government has also made it easy for retirees aged 50 and above to settle down, offering accessible retirement visa options. Although adjusting to Thai culture can be a challenge at first, many retirees find it enriching. Embracing local customs and the slower pace of life can become one of the most rewarding parts of living in Thailand. Luxury living for less In Bangkok, a one-bedroom apartment in the city centre costs around US$600 a month. Move out of the centre, and you could pay as little as US$300. Of course, these numbers will fluctuate depending on where you are in the capital. Renting a house or a villa is also a popular choice among retirees, mostly in cities such as Pattaya, Phuket, or Chiang Mai, as rent may generally be cheaper, coupled with a plentiful expat community. Dining out in Thailand is a treat you can afford often, with many meals costing less than US$5. Groceries and many services are much cheaper compared to Western cities, so retirees can enjoy a lifestyle in Thailand for a fraction of the cost anywhere else in the world. Thailand’s healthcare system is one of the best in Asia, especially for expats. Thailand offers both public and private healthcare, but private hospitals often feel more like hotels than clinics. International hospitals in Bangkok and Chiang Mai are equipped with the latest technology and English-speaking staff. Medical costs in Thailand are also significantly lower than in the West. For example, a knee replacement might cost US$14,000 in Thailand versus over US$50,000 in the US. That’s a huge saving for those on fixed incomes. However, rural healthcare can be hit or miss. In some areas, emergency responders are volunteers, and resources are limited. That’s why many retirees opt for urban areas with reliable facilities that are also included in their health insurance plans. Cigna health insurance for expat retirees While healthcare is affordable, having insurance is still important. Thai insurance plans are cheap but may come with limitations. Coverage may exclude common accidents, have low claim limits, and be unavailable to seniors or non-Thai speakers. When choosing a health insurance plan, expats should opt for international plans and consider features that provide comprehensive protection. Cigna Global offers: Hospital stays: Coverage up to US$1,000,000 annually for major health conditions Doctor visits: Up to US$25,000 per year for check-ups and specialist care Chronic illness care: Full coverage for long-term treatments Emergency evacuation: Global emergency assistance included Preventive care: Screenings, vaccinations, and routine check-ups to detect and manage health issues early Custom add-ons: Optional coverage for dental, vision, or maternity care These benefits make Cigna an ideal option for retirees who want a balance of affordability and premium service. Thailand ticks all the boxes for retirees: low cost of living, excellent healthcare, warm weather, and a welcoming culture. With careful planning and the right insurance, retiring in Thailand can offer not only comfort and adventure but also peace of mind. 4. A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar today, sending shockwaves as far as Bangkok and causing widespread devastation. The epicenter was near Mandalay at a depth of 10 kilometers. The impact was strongly felt, prompting chaos and evacuations across the Thai capital. In Bangkok, a building near Chatuchak Park collapsed, trapping more than 40 people inside. According to police and emergency services, 43 workers remain buried under the debris, while seven have managed to escape. Rescue operations are in full swing, with help from the National Emergency Response and Rescue Centre, as teams work tirelessly to reach survivors. The Thai government has responded swiftly, convening an emergency meeting to address the crisis. Buildings in Bangkok, not typically designed for such quakes, suffered damage, highlighting the severity of the situation. The US Geological Survey and BBC reports confirm that strong tremors were felt even in southern China, making this a significant regional event. 28-03-2025

  6. it's quite probable, depending on the context. In Thai, ฝุ่น (fùn, meaning "dust") is commonly associated with air pollution, especially fine particulate matter like PM2.5. When translating from Thai to English, you might see ฝุ่น translated as dust. Not the same as your use or understanding of "dust" as a native speaker.

  23. Maria Kovalchuk, a 20-year-old Ukrainian OnlyFans model, has survived a horrifying ordeal after being found dumped by a roadside in Dubai with multiple broken bones and a shattered spine. Missing for ten days, Maria was last seen heading to a party on March 9, reportedly invited by two men posing as modeling agents. She missed her scheduled flight to Thailand two days later, sparking panic among her family and friends. Maria was discovered on March 19 in critical condition, unable to speak and without identification or her phone. She has undergone four surgeries and remains hospitalised. Her mother, Anna, who flew from Norway to be by her side, expressed cautious optimism about Maria’s recovery, stating, “She is getting medical treatment and everything will be all right.” Dubai police claim Maria entered a restricted construction site alone and fell from a height. However, her family disputes this explanation, calling it “fake” and suspecting foul play. Russian media outlets have raised concerns that Maria may have been lured into sexual exploitation schemes under the guise of glamorous opportunities. The term “Sheikh parties” has emerged in discussions—events where young women are allegedly paid for degrading acts with wealthy men. Maria’s case has drawn attention to the darker side of Dubai’s influencer scene. Reports suggest she may have been targeted for one of these so-called “Porta Potty” parties, notorious for exploiting models and influencers. While Dubai police deny these claims, the incident has ignited debates about the safety of young women navigating international modeling opportunities. The Ukrainian consulate in Dubai is closely monitoring the investigation alongside Maria’s family and legal representatives. As questions mount over what truly happened to Maria during those ten days, her story serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by models abroad—a world promising glamour but often hiding dangerous shadows.
