  1. Cat is faster than any other ISP in Thailand. You're making me jealous shariq!

Not true. My UIH leased lines blow CAT out of the water.

We lease lines with 1:1 contention ratio and dedicated International bandwidth.

Right now we're testing a 30/30 (30 down 30 up both domestic and international)

here is a speedtest of cat, i hope you can provide a speedtest of UIH lease line from testmy.net if its really fast internationally i would like to subscribe to it. is it available in sukhumvit, Bangkok?

  2. Can you also do traceroute to UK location?

    IP is 217.147.84.150

Your results are amazing btw. Wonder how much it'll cost if I pay to deploy fiber cable from Cat (not sure they'll do it for home package)

Be advised as i mentioned in other posts one of my friend who plays battlefield 4 with me on pc uses cat fiber home package and he gets bad latency to the same server i am playing in. Maybe because premium lines get better routing than home packages. So unless you are going for premium cat packages, don't expect home packages to get the bandwidth and routing as premium lines.

If you friend could do a traceroute from his computer, we could compare and tell. I wonder if he gets worse latency than my true online?

He doesn't understand this but i will try to get it. Btw does true and cat have partnership with home internet? i am asking this because ever since the anti government protesters disturbed the cat headquarters if you remember, my internet that day disconnected for an hour or so and i was able to use the internet after a hour but it wasn't cat internet! i was getting true internet on cat fiber line. i believe cat that day put me on a back up true system but even now i am getting both true and cat internet on the same line. if on my router i use pppoe connection with cat provided user name and password i get cat connection but if i leave it to automatic dhcp it connects me to a true internet?? this started happening since the anti government protesters cut the lines at cat headquarters.

  5. Muratremix are you planning to get 3bb ?

I would like to give 3bb fttx a try 30/3 mb for 1200 baht a month if I am satisfied with the routing, however I am not sure they have fttx in my mooban. But I saw advertisement of it about 500-800 m from my home so it got me thinking.

My true works probably much better than anybody else due to my location is Thai residential area and I'm the only farang within 5km2 area (I guess?). However I hated true online transparent proxy and I'm using singapore / uk proxy/vpn to bypass transparent proxy and change my routing.

For example routing to Turkey goes from Singapore - UK - Turkey and gives like 365 ms at best, at worst, it is routed via USA (yes!) and gives 400+ ms ping.

When I use UK vps, I get 200 ms to UK via direct connection and another 70 ms to reach Turkey = 270 ms, perfect for VOIP.

On the other hand, Betamax SIP server goes trough premium route, Thailand - India - Europe and gives 210 ms ping (Amazing)

Btw can you do traceroute via your cat fiber when you have time?

Sure, i will do it when i reach home.

Btw do you want ping response time results or traceroute?

  6. I'm getting sick of my international bandwidth slowing right down at night during prime time viewing (mainly Netflix). Seems to have gotten worse over the past few months.

I was wondering if I upgraded to optical fibre does this get rid of this annoying throttling down which seems to happen between 6 and midnight? Or am I in the same boat.

There is no difference between adsl and fiber optic packages in terms of international bandwidth unless you can pay 10000 baht a month or more. But basic packages adsl, cable and fiber are exactly the same the only difference would be in wire running from the pole to your end.

  8. Thanks for the OP for the tip. Unfortunately it came too late as I already made 3 year contract for a Amazon EC2 micro server.

Some time ago I asked from Digital Ocean if they are going to open a datacenter in Singapore and the answer at the time was negative.

Their prices seems to be very good.

(And I did not knew what kind of metering was talked about, it could have been several possibilities).

    Its just 5 bucks :)

Worth bypassing true online transparent proxy alone.

    Muratremix,

If you have time, would you mind posting results with using your tot connection using digital ocean. A friend of mine is using tot ADSL but he gets really bad latency to international servers in gaming due to tot horrible routing. I was wondering would this fix his latency and routing issue?

  9. If international bandwidth it is what you are looking for its exactly the same as 3bb adsl unless you are talking about a business package which starts at 6000 per month

How do you work this out? I have heard it stated/quoted many times on the TV forum that Thai International Internet BW sucks however, this Thai guy seems to have done his homework:-

    http://www.fttxworld.com/index.php/review/item/23-tot-fttx-vs-true-docsis/23-tot-fttx-vs-true-docsis

and when you look at his International speed tests:-

    http://www.fttxworld.com/index.php/review/item/25-fttx-docsis-internet-fttx-tot-docsis-true

his published test results DO NOT seem to agree with your statement!

I am not trying to provoke an argument it is just that I am thinking about installing 3BB FTTx in order to be able to watch live international TV over the Internet without having to put up with the continual re-loads & stuttering of the present system. I am therefore looking at what hi-speed options are available and also, what folk are saying. As you may gather, the contradictory statements just do not help in making decisions any easier.

Constructive comments would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. the final part of his series:-

    http://www.fttxworld.com/index.php/review/item/38-fttx-docsis-internet-fttx-tot-docsis-true

Just another dumb thai who believes his ping/latency is faster than light. His tests are fake and running behind a proxy. If you got any sense can you tell me is it possible to get under10 ms ping round trip from Washington to Thailand?

  10. Loma, when I've talked to True and 3BB about their fiber services in the past, if memory serves, both were talking about mandatory 1 year service (and I presume billing) commitments. Nothing in the way of "try it, and see if it works for you."

How's CAT On Net in that regard? And when you or your associates bailed out of their CAT On Net services, presumably after less than a full year of service, how did that go with CAT in terms of penalties or financial stuff?

I wouldn't mind giving CAT or 3BB fiber a try at some point, if nothing else just to have a basis for comparison with my current True cable. And I'd be willing to pay some reasonable installation charge. But I'm sure as heck not going to commit to paying 12 months of fees at X,000 baht per month with no idea going it whether the service is going to be worthwhile or not.

I know a few guys who do have the basic cat onnet silver and gold packages but they get nothing like me in terms of international speed, even their routing for some odd reason was different and slower than mine. As for 3bb fttx I can't really speak about business packages which costs 7000 a month but a friend of mine who has the cheapest 1200 baht fiber plan gets the same international bandwidth as his previous 3bb ADSL.

I am really not sure what package I am using at the moment but when I initially signed up two years ago I think it was 25 mbps platinium or something but every few month or close to a year my ISP upgrades the speed plan for the same price.

  11. This is to those all who say Thailand has crappy internet infrastructure,

here is my 10,000 baht per month premium line which i am happy to pay because i get decent international single threaded bandwidth,

Test to san jose west us (single threaded)

  12. Correct. If you are in a single threaded world you don't even need a 10mbs connection. A 5mbs connection would do even if you watch YouTube or other videos. But if you are into downloading, your options are very good in Thailand.

Sent from my C6802 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Good? I believe one of the best if not best for downloading because Thailand is one of the few countries i know that does not limit or apply monthly bandwidth cap even on the cheapest dsl plans. Even in states they do have some limit on bandwidth cap. True did talk about the bandwidth cap on an hour scheme but honestly i know so many folks who frequently exceeds it and have never encountered any throttling due to exceeding the allowance.

  13. I tested neighbour's airnet yesterday like 8pm. I was disappointed with the results. Then I realized iphone traceoute / ping applications give higher pings compared to computer, which my test did reveal. Too bad I did not write wifi password onto something and I can't test with my laptop.

However, higher ping or not, I did not like routing of AIS sbn.co.th. Europe tends to go over usa route again and ookla speed test was even slow at Thailand. Testmy.net different servers produced different results, singapore was very good, the rest was terrible.,

I come back to house, tested same servers with my True, no problem. In fact, True IIG / Cat does even better than before nowadays (knock on wood).

  14. I wouldn't get too hung up on the actual physical medium which gets terminated in your condo. Someone might terminate fiber in the basement, or out on the street, and then pull copper up to your actual living space. Very few customers are getting fiber terminated inside their home.

We tried CAT OnNet in a few SoHo applications and it was a nightmare, and as been uninstalled, and should be avoided unless you like a sharp stick in the eye, repeatedly, day after day, ad infinitum.

TOT does have some FTTx solutions, and 3BB are installing FTTx in a lot of new housing developments in metro-Bangkok.

The dual-WAN suggestion may help in some specific applications, and is great to back-up access in the event of an outage ( many outages here tend to affect both, independent access methods), but choose the router carefully - making sure it supports your application requirements.

There are a bunch of FTTx-specific Thai-centric web-sites and blogs. Even legacy sites like adslthailand have a lot of user experiences with FTTx.

SoFarAndNear's post #2 is succinct and accurate.

Do note that cat's supplied huawei based router has some inbuilt international bandwidth throttling software or some form of mechanism. In thailand you get full plan speed but internationaly you get crappy speeds. However after changing to your own routers there is no more throttling. I am speaking from experience of two cat fiber users.

  15. Well basically i know one guy who recently switched from horrible tot winet (which also uses the same technology as ais airmet) to ais airnet and he is really happy he did. Latency is always stable 100% unlike his previous tot winet service which had frequent disconnections, unstable latency and variation in speed depending on time and day. I really cant say about the international routing or bandwidth but i do know he can watch us netflix at 1080p super hd constantly using both his ps4 and ps3 which never happened with his tot connection. I am only speaking from one person's experience so it may differ for you. One more thing i thought only thais can sign up for ais airnet?

Where it say "up to" 1000Mbps download speed I wonder what the "up to" part really means? Kinda like where 3G speeds have advertised speeds "up to 42Mbps" but a person gets much less than that. From looking at the testmy.net website the "average" download speed being shown for MyRepublic is 12.4Mb. Link.

I expect most of the tests involved in that 12.4Mb average were tests to testmy.net U.S. servers. If true, seems MyRepublic throttles international bandwidth just like Thai ISPs do.

If you read on their website under features it says speed is guaranteed 99% of the time. But regardless of international throttling its really hard to beat for the price of only 1200 baht per momth for that speed. Also do not forget that most big websites such as facebook or youtube have local servers hosted in singapore.

170 ms to west coast is impossible. East coast is possible from SG (Los Angeles)

Why its not possible ? 170 ms is definitely possible from singapore. I think you are mistaken los angeles is in west coast.
