  1. I am in a building that has a problem with the lifts.

We have been given advice by the maintenance company, but the cost is high.

We would love to know if there is a lift engineer in Chiang Mai that would give up an hour or so to look at our system and say if we are going down the correct path. I'm sure I could find a spare bottle of beer in exchange.

  2. I believe that land registry will not split a title for a condo.

But even if they do then you will certainly require 50% of the owners approving the change at a general meeting.

Not sure what reason you would have to get this approval but change of the title deeds seems possible, or have to make a new entrance into the 2nd unit - a change of exterior appearance of the unit. Both the former (probably) and the latter (definitely) require owners approval.

That is not looking at the practicalities of separating water supply that often runs in the solid concrete floor!

  3. Interesting comments.

I went for the 125 over the 110, partially as the seat is more comfortable for the pillion. It is a bit bigger/thicker.

I've found a big power difference between the 100 Dream I used and the 125 Wave, not that it really accelerates faster (I'm not a boy racer) but that you can pull away in 3rd or 4th without any major problems, and it goes up slopes in 2nd that the dream insisted on using 1st.

There is a difference in the shape of the 125 over the 110 Wave, it is better designed and has a better look. The shocks are shiny not matt finish.

The electronic odometer and fuel display must be worth something? Along with whatever it does for the first 3 seconds after you switch on. Not sure about opening the seat from the ignition key, it is a bit fiddly but it might be more secure. However as I leave my shopping in the front basket security in that field is not my major concern.

I've had no problem with 3rd gear but notice that you have to move the pedal further to get the gear change than the wave which can make for a problem for long legs, they sort of don't bend enough! I find this particularly true changing into 1st gear.

I do not like the fact that the basket does not move with the front wheel, makes it more awkward for parking.

The good news is I have people queuing up to buy the old dream. They all say the engine is so much stronger and they do not want the new bikes. Not managed to make anyone give an actual figure as to what they will pay ................. (I need to keep it for the moment until I get my wing 41 sticker for the new bike.)

Is it worth 10,000 more? Depends on the misses, she says it is so as always it is SWMBO.

  4. Yep - I have just got back after 6 months away - all my electricity bills were zero (actually didn't get them). You don't pay the standing charge if you use under a certain amount of KwH, think it was 100 but I don't know.

I've just checked back. Setting up a standing order for PEA in Chiang Mai from Bangkok Bank was done straight away and the next bill was paid direct from the bank.

Setting it up for TOT took 3 months. In the end I paid 4,000 baht in an advanced payment and they slowly used that to pay my bills each month ie each month the bill had a reducing credit. Then went over to claiming the money from the bank.

I believe you can pay the electricity bill in advance in the same way. Obviously not at 7-eleven but at the electricity company office.

  5. I want it for the two of us around town so I do not think I need the extra engine size. Lasted for the last 8 years on a 25 year old 100cc Dream.

I was wondering if I was missing some 'must have' item in the 125?

Could be correct on the price discrepancy as they did say free tax, insurance, helmet etc. Nothing is 'free'.

  6. I've been looking at the new Honda Wave and I like the Wave with electric start, front disc brakes and fuel injection.

But I can see little difference between the 110cc and the 125cc just electronic display, twin headlights and of course a slightly bigger engine.

Is it worth an extra 10,000 baht (25%) for such a relatively small benefit or are there other, bigger, differences?

Incidentally the prices on motorcycle.in.th seem to be a bit out of date, quoting B38,000 for the 110 and B48,500 for the 125 - but I have just looked at B41,500 for the 110 and B52,000 for the 125 - or am I looking at the wrong prices?

  7. I do an online transfer from my Isle of Man Lloyds offshore account via internet banking to Bangkok Bank in London via an acount they have set up for anyone to do this - they know its you as your reference on the payment is your BB Thai account number, they then forward it on to my Bangkok Bank Thai account. There is no charge from Lloyds to transfer to BB London as done through the UK banking system. BB London take £15 out of the sterling I send and then transfer to BB Thailand, it then gets converted to Baht in Thailand at the days local bank Thai rate....overall cost is only £15 and its really easy to do- they do not levy any charge when it arrives in Thailand as its taken in London. It takes around 7 days - I dont need to speak to anybody to do this transaction. The details of how to do it are on the BB London website - been using this for months and can only sing praise for how good it is with a decent rate...

Thanks for that, will try it next month.

I phoned London Bangkok bank a couple of days ago and seemed to get told,

If you use the £15 option, transfer into Baht in London then the London exchange rate was 46.3 baht.

If you use the £20 option, plus up to 500 Baht in Thailand and transfer in GBP then you get Bangkok rate that was 47.05 baht.

Does seem if you transfer enough it is better to transfer in GBP, if only a small amount the transfer in Baht. I'm giving it a go at the moment but transferring in GBP as it is a £5,000 transfer and the better exchange rate saves me about £75 or so.

PS - How long does the transfer take? I started it on Monday, when does my BKK account get credited?????

  8. Only goes on sale on Thursday week - and then only 'whilst stock last'.

I have a slide/neg scanner but it cost some 10x the price.

If you ain't got one this looks a good buy. It does take time to scan slides and negs - but I just keep a pile on the desk and do a few at a time.

  9. Over the years a number of people have asked about scanning negs and slides, and each time it had seem to be very expensive to either get someone else to do it or to buy a scanner.

People with friends or relatives in the UK might find this scanner, at £40 (2,000 Baht) very interesting

(In case the link does not work go to the Lidl uk site, look under 'great outdoors' from 29th April)

  10. proxy votes are votes in attendance - they are represented at the meeting.

But Trajan, I've a problem with this bit:

    (example) 30% attending a Meeting

however, let's say that you only got 30% of all possible votes to attend the meeting (you still have a quorum), but 20% vote to remove the manager and 10% vote against...the manager stays, because even though the majority at the meeting won the resolution, the vote did not reach the legal minumum of 25% of the total number of possible votes.

For chucking out a manger and a few other bits you have to have 50% or the owners represented at the meeting, physically or proxies. And then you must have a majority of the vote.

You are correct that the manager in your example would stay, but even if the full 30% of those attending voted to chuck them out there was not 50% of the owners represented so the manager would stay.

My reading of the law anyway.
