Maggie Mays, top end of Soi Chaiyapoon (off Buakow). Best I've had by far - they get it from Dublin and its well looked after. I've tried Retox, Wetherspoons etc. but this wins hands down. Its as good as 'back home' and costs B195 a pint.

This plus they shift a fair drop considering the size of the place.

Kind of feels like a New York Irish dive bar

  2. Where would I buy teak doors in town?

I've seen the ones in Homepro etc & they are ok but my doorways are over sized so off the shelf doors won't fit anyway.

Well if they're not renovating then the new waitresses were wearing very dirty uniforms & a couple were unshaven.

Seemed also to have cleared away all the tables, chairs & counters plus the place could really do with a proper dusting.

  4. Very good point JohnJay.

Often the same with the electric noses clippers etc.. I never see them being cleaned between punters.

Are there any turkish/indian style barbers that singe off your nasal & ear hair about town?

Best shaves that I ever had were in rural India, I think it's because the indigenous populace of both sexes there are quite hirsute

  5. Agreed, the assaulted gent should make the aussie press aware of this.

There but for the grace of god but that beating could have had far worse of an outcome that the cuts & bruises this man suffered.

CCTV & traffic cameras are littering the place these days so a chance that this little mob will be on there attacking what for intensive purposes was a defenseless old man.

I was in city hall this week & saw the banks of high def monitors in the office on the right handside just inside the front doors.

After reading this I thought that I'd give it a go.

The barber took a while but was careful & had both hot & cold towels for my face & head.

I hadn't checked the price list (I know, I know) beforehand but had the 100baht figure in my head as that was the number thrown around on here & how much I pay in usual spot but was asked for 400.

The girl was complaining to to only other customer that we were the only people that they'd served all day & it approaching 5ish.

Anyway the shock must have given some of my roots a bit of a shock as well because either it had regrown in various spots because by the time that I had got home parts of my head were as rough as a badgers backside

I had a shower & shaved myself being a little bit wiser & a tad poorer

I completely agree - if you are going to have wine with dinner it is a much better deal bringing your own - by the way how much is the NZ steak there these days?

I have not eaten there for a while as last time I went in the background smell of fried food was a little overpowering and I turned round and left .

I can't remember exactly topt as the evening went on until the early hours.

About the only thing that I remember with any clarity was how much I enjoyed that steak.

There were a few lone diners enjoying red wine by the glass as well.

  8. I understand that quite a few of the hotel booking websites are now owned by the same company.

They operate like uber etc in that they are now the biggest names in the hotel business but do not own a single hotel room.

If an hotelier wants to sign up with them then the booking agent is completly in charge.

They set the room rates on their websites & not the hotels.

The real high end joints have different agreements.

Hotels can let directly to you but they must not undercut the online prices that websites set or they are blacklisted.

Your beat bet is a walk in to a place with a bent front desk also an half empty hotel & they may well rent you a room off the book for a decent discount.

    How do I know this?

I'm opening one up (not here I might add) later in the year & these are the terms that I have been offered.

It's a new day & surge pricing is a term that will take over for a while.

I wonder if Tescos will charge us less if we go shopping when the stores quiet? ;)

  9. 350 is a lumpy agreed, 2-300 is the norm except in local Thai places where it's gratis in my experience although my one & only trip to Koh Samet the resort that I stayed at were charging 500THB corkage.

The wine that I had at Patrick's cost me about 800 baht in Wine Connection so that's 1150 total which is about Patrick;s entry level pricing.

My wine was superior so thanks to Patrick's corkage fee both the restaurant & myself were satisfied.

I can get cheaper steaks & cheaper wine elsewhere but there is a world of difference in the cost of things & the value of things.

I thought that I got good value.

If for example I saw a sign offering me a steak dinner with a bottle of red wine for 500 baht all in, I wouldn't stop & think "wow, what great value, I must try this".

It would be more along the lines of "they must be kidding, what's the catch? How can they serve a decent steak dinner with drinkable plonk for that price?"

It's the perception of value that captures us & the realisation of  that value that will ensure our enjoyment & return.

Anyway I had a cracking slap-up steak dinner with a cheeky red plus a lovely little sort serving our table, job done IMO.

  10. I had an NZ fillet steak there a couple of days ago & it was superb.

I brought my own bottle of cab sav & even with their 350THB corkage charge it still works out well.

I have no issue whatsoever with corkage charges at that price as I understand they must make a profit.

They took the bottle & uncorked it & presented us with nice clean burgundy style glasses.

I ate once at A La Campagne (never again) on the Suk just past floating market & the corkage was 300THB.

I asked for glasses & an ice bucket & was told that they do not give out wine glasses or ice buckets if you bring your own wine.

We were given extra water tumblers.

    Class act.
