  1. Well after our experience on our 14th Floor Condo after the earthquake on Thursday night we started thinking it might be safer to live in a 2 story 3 Bedoom 2 Bath House.

So we started doing research on which is safer... Highrise or Single Family Home.

What we found out was.... it ALL depends on the type of Earthquake.

Check it out here... interesting reading.

    http://www.iris.edu/...ingsInEQs_2.pdf

    Pages 4 and 5

Interesting reading about the resonant frequency and how it's selective to what it can bring down. I still feel like I have a better chance under 1 or 2 floors of wood and tiles vs. under 6 or more floors of reinforced concrete and steel.

    Thanks for the reading!

  2. Suprised that noone has mentioned it as temblor.....

this was very common in Mexico aroundthe time of the Mexico City Earthquake , which was one of the first to have such international coverage with the coming of more and more rapid media communications.

I guess where you're located you'd have to watch for a 'ping-nami' if we get a big tremblor nearby.

  3. Just a passing thought:

What a truly astonishing number of comments and an amazing number of views on this topic WITHIN 24 HOURS !!! And, on a topic that is still remarkably well-covered in other ways by news media (even though it occurred in the hinterlands of Burma !) and through other deeper sources. For example, I have the earthquake plotted exactly on Google Earth, have access to all the world's principal news media and so on. Perhaps it goes to show how this sort of medium has in some way replaced "the local" or, in America, the "corner tavern," or the morning marketplace and coffee house venues.

...or supplemented these venues? Seems to be a more efficient way to get word around. (next to just telling a Thai girl!.This will get word across town fastest. )

  4. Today is back to normal, but I've never seen such a crystal clear sky like today in march for seven years. I have a wonderful view on the mountains near Mae Wang. Rarely so clear.

Happy it's hot again, i just cannot stand 18° with cold winds and rain here. :)

Like you say, we're back to normal with the way March usually is. Today near 37 and AQI at 91.

I didn't think it was that hot, maybe if you're standing in the sun, Absolutlely beautiful day I believe! Like you say, clear sky and a slight breeze. Sure beats still smoke filled air, the norm for later March. Temps have already peaked and starting to drop for today so we may get one last 'windows open and no AC' night before the usual returns.

  6. Am wondering why they don't have a name for this weather situation like "The China Express" or something like that. In other parts of the world, special weather conditions get names like "A Chinook", or "Santa Anna Winds" but I guess it doesn't happen often enough here in SE Asia to warrant a cool name.

Yen Sabai would be a good one.

I like it! How about "Yen Sabai China Mariah" so we know where it came from? My wife says it should be called "Rom Yen Tamaiyah" or the "Why the Cold Wind"!

or how about "now chip hai loi !!" I wish I could freeze frame and record a day's weather to play back when wanted because it would be today!

  7. Bring back the heat that's all I can say. It reminded me of a British summer day today. I came here to escape those.

I'm with you! One of the reasons I moved here as well. Last year in mid March we were breaking the 38c (100f) mark. I'm all for the rain to keep the air cleansed but a little warmer than this.:D

I see we dipped to the 13c mark this morning just as it started getting light out. brrr!

  8. "Bangkok schools remove condom vending machines in time for Valentine's Day; Thailand Live Monday"

‏Saw this headline first thing this morning and struck me kind of humorous with it's wording. Bangkok schools timing was cutting it close! 'Safe sex' on Valentine's Day too?

A lot of vehicles fail the moose test but if you buy a pick up to drive like a Lotus then you are going to be in serious trouble. The worst, most unstable car I have owned here is the MkII Honda CRV, get the corner wrong and it was not going to forgive you. My Fortuner is much more forgiving and corners one heck of a lot better. It is a tall car and it is not going to corner like a saloon car, only a fool would try it. I do not agree with BKCL that it is monstrous, it might be if you try driving down small Soi's in the city with it. I drive it across country lugging a fair load most times. On those journeys there is usually road construction or diversions across paddy fields. Saloon cars can have serious problems negotiating those obstacles, as long as a pick up truck can negotiate it they dont care. The Fortuner was in a Mid East 4x4 magazine some years ago and won the award of the 'Best small SUV'! I have no idea what the difference in quality is compared to the Philippines or South African made vehicles. It is purely academic, I live here. I buy the car from the shop down the road as I am most likely to get a better service if I have bought from them especially if things go wrong. You can spout off all day long about how crap some cars are compared to others but at the end of the day you buy a car that you can afford and one that fits your requirements, not someone elses. You pays your money and you takes your choice. .

You mention some of the reasons we decided on a Fortuner. I feel lot better with the missus cruising around with a little more metal around her for some protection.

  10. I'm not aware of 2-way Internet satellite providers around here (doesn't mean they are not here) but just wanted to point out the Bluetooth / cell phone connection option if you have cell phone range where you are. When I go up country to our cabin with no phone line ADSL I bring my notebook and connect to my cell phone to get online. It's slower (similar to dial-up speed) but does the job. I believe this way to be significantly less expensive than a 2-way satellite setup if they are here.

  11. I saw a couple floor displays of auto-gates at Global House. From CM go down 108 (CM - Hong Dong hwy) to the Big C intersection and turn left there. Follow the hwy. across the Ping river and further about 2 km on left. Huge sign.

  12. Amorn (I think) on Maneenopparat Road, at Icon Plaza. Large store selling electronic components.

That would be the best bet. Take the power supply with you so they can match it up.

This is very good advice. The main things that can easily go wrong and by comparing you lessen the chances are, the connector plug polarity (+ and - are located the same), the connector dimensions match - inside opening and outside diameter, voltage and current ratings- voltage has to be the same but current (the mA number) has to be at least as much but can be higher with no problem.

If you live south of town there's another Amorn in the Big C store Hong Dong.

  13. 1000 baht for 2 at Marco's ???

Depends what you had of course.

    I made two points:

For what you get Marcos is good value. In other words value for money

And he does no self promotion. Presumably does not need to.

Although serving different dishes at different prices, it is perfectly appropriate and valid to compare eateries on a "what you get for your money" basis

CAF you really have a problem with sponsors on here don't you, first The Red Lion, Then the Old Bell, Now Pun Pun. Are you just a bitter twisted old man than hates the fact the some can earn a living over here while your struggling with a weakening pension or is there some other reason that you have to put down all the sponsors on here that help to keep the forum open and running?

....Sounds like a job for "Preparation H", to me :D

At least it looks like I am running in good circle with the greats.,,,, thank you one and all

Keep passing out free Sweet Potato pie with ice cream and the "greats" will always be nearby. :whistling:

  14. Isn't there a valet service? Given the price level I would expect so.. :whistling:

I wasn't only being frivolous.. given the positive reviews I planned to take the family there, then went to the web site to check the exact location. Then I stumbled on the 'specials' menu, and their pricing. Then I thought.. WHOA.. that's not guesthouse pricing.. if the specials already cost 150-200 baht, then I am concerned about the regular food.. Maybe the issue is with the web site, but I'm reading correctly then meatloaf and some mashed potato costs 235 baht 6 days of the week:

    meatloaf_350.jpg

So anyway I'll make the effort and come by some day soon. I have since heard on and off this forum that I was WAY out to lunch on this, and I should shut up and visit. So I will.

May have to wait until pay day though. ;)

Could anyone either post the address and/or Google maps to this place? :)

As WTK points out it being on their site but here it is again 'cause I just went thru the effort of setting it up ...;)

  15. The motivational part of the "educated/motivated household member" has to be so strong to also keep the spending desires in line for all the family. This has to be a household effort to work, not just the bread winner. The old expression " the more you make, the more you spend " is so true in a lot of cases and makes it hard to get ahead. Perhaps "discipline" needs to be added to the description as well. Interesting article, thanks for sharing!
