My Thai DL is expired in 4 months, can I use it in the UK?

Bit off topic but I was going to rent a car but now thinking of getting my own insurance for my mother's car. Is this possible if her own insurance says they can't add me, I mean if I use another company?

I looked into this around 2001 and they said I would have to pay class 1 contributions so I didn't do it. I asked again in 2015 and they said I could do the class 2, so I paid back 10 years at once, which was 66,000 baht. I've been paying every years since, around 6,000 baht. So glad I checked again as I will get a full pension, despite only working in the Uk for 4 years.
