  1. all NASDAQ shares trade as well pre- and after market. Regardless also any other share trading at any exchange cannot be predicted at which price it finally will open into the next ordinary trading session.

At least not to a retail trader. There are price arrangement made in advance between for example an institution (bank, insurance company, hedge fund, very large trader) the market makers of a particular share and the stock exchange by itself to clear big block orders. But this is insider information not available, strictly forbidden and therewith not really existing or is it?smile.png

  2. I am certain if you go to the bank and ask that you will get the full story (fees and maybe even special conditions). Just ask for the manager and he'll take his time as soon you mention million(s)

Sorry, but after 13 years here, I'm not convinced that I will be sure to get the right answer. This isn't 'Thai bashing', I'm just stating a fact.

Maybe I will get chapter and verse, maybe I won't - its all a bit hit and miss. You just never know.

Surely you must realise this from the different so-call rules that different banks impose on farangs who want to open accounts. Some require work permits, some non- immigrant visas, some nothing.

I know its not the same, but it simply demonstrates the way they can bend or misinterpret rules when it suits them. I need to be sure.

I will go and ask my bank, and I may well get a proper answer, but want to see if their information syncs with anyone's personal experience.

yes and I didn't talk thai bashing either but banking. Anyway maybe somebody gives you better clues.

  3. How does that make gold money? Anything can be traded or bartered. So everything is money now?

No I think you have Money & Currency confused.

    Gold has always been money

Fiat paper is a currency/coin of a realm creation that is used

    as money

I'd say you got it even more confused. Gold was never money and also never will.

You are not one for historical facts I guess whistling.gif

Guess further if you like, History and fact in one sentence is already topic enough to keep you busy forever.

  4. Fletch, agree with your comments above. I don't see the info you have shared in this thread as you spruiking yourself as an expert, as has been suggested. I can well understand others reluctance to follow suit due to the predictable carping responses, ie. my thingie is bigger than your thingie, if you are so brilliant then you wouldn't be spending time on thaivisa, so just how much money have you made anyway? so on and so forth.

With investments, and investment advice, it's horses for courses. And there is no one perfect investment for all. The Thaivisa membership ranges from investment novices (the majority) to those working in (or retired from) the finance sector. People need situation-relevant advice and encouragement to make their way up the many steps to the financial Valhalla inhabited by the likes of Phronesis. Alas, to suggest that someone who is not fully across algorithmic trading is incapable of offering meaningful assistance to the hoi polloi is just plain batty.

I am but a humble scribe. Like many others here I appreciate, and benefit from, reading of the investment triumphs and tragedies of fellow expats. I happily defer to the superior sector-specific experience and expertise of a number of notable contributors here on Thaivisa. Similarly, I look forward to sharing any knowledge that might be imparted from the member from Phuket ... just as soon as someone devises an algorithm to remove a broomstick.

And now I'm going fishing. Seriously. wai.gif

  5. To make use of HFT and Algo is very easy and simple.

    Easy and simple...

    Ok...answer my three questions....anyone....anyone....?

if you want to have answers to the one-two-three questions quoted in other posts then I cannot answer them. Clear enough that you do not qualify as a client (high networth) otherwise you'd have contacted the banks directly and not Thaivisa.

An additional clue is that Thailand is good in copying things without understanding much (also in banking) so even if you load the cash boat and walk in an institute here that doesn't mean that you'll make money with them.

I already know the answers...the questions were posed to Fletch and the others on this thread (you can include yourself in that group) who claim to have knowledge about investing in Thailand.

To date all of that collective knowledge posted on this thread consists of buy and hold mutual funds, then sell them off a little when the market is a bit toppy...pure genius...cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Oh and my contribution to this thread is protecting other TV members from listening to the financial advice of members who cant even answer the 3 simple test questions that I posed...

I would have thought that was a very worthwhile contribution...

hehehe, yeah therewith you qualified yourself as the board clown ot the day. Enjoy laughing I am with you there ...

    Blah blah blah.....

Everyone is an expert in a bull market.

Here is a little test for Fletch and the other self proclaimed financial experts posting on this thread.

If you can answer all of the following three questions correctly, I will endorse you as actually having some knowledge about investing Thailand, rather than just having the dumb luck of being in the right place at the right time.

    Question one

Which Thai bank has developed an algorithm driven bot to trade the SET, and through one of its wholly own subsidiaries, uses it to "automatically" trade with funds from the accounts of subscribed high net worth investors?

    Question two

What is the minimum required investment deposit to qualify for access to the above mentioned trading bot?

    Question three

What firm will be floating a SET reverse ETF later this year?

Mmm surprise surprise...no takers on my LITTLE challenge...

PCA posted something about it. Apart from that it seems no-one was particularly interested in algorithimic bot trading to bother finding out - a reasonable reflection of the Thai market.

Might be something to drop into casual conversation with ex-banking colleagues if the topic came up - but not something to rush off and telephone everyone you know because someone you've never met on an internet forum is excited and thinks it's important laugh.png

I'd be the first to admit I don't know everything about everything in banking and investment in Thailand. That's why it's interesting to share different thought and experiences on different threads on forums.

I measure my knowledge by what I don't know, which many mature people do . It seems you measure yours by what you know in a very narrow field in arriving at being an "expert". I guess we'll all have to make the most of life without your "endorsements"

Congratulations on being a self declared expert in your own "little" field. You must be very proud clap2.gif

With all that in mind feel free to share something constructive...

Regarding alogorithm model- I know a handful of people with cash to burn who would be extremely interested in a high entry trading system such as this- but its certainly not set up to interest the average thaivisa investor.

He -phronesis- posted valid questions, questions which a real insider /knowledgeable Thailand equities investor might reasonably be expected to know (certainly if i had a professional financial adviser for Thailand and he didn't know the answers to these questions, id be firing his sorry ass). The way he expressed himself was unfriendly, though.

you probably mean people who want to gamble when you say cash to burn. To make use of HFT and Algo is very easy and simple. If you want to play small you still can see the points on every chart and if you want to play it big you need 2 things: prime bokerage and blackbox; when you have those it is simple again and easy to make the bigger bucks. Reading charts correctly did not change and remains the dominating root of changes in price.

  8. Aberdeen fees are not bad- but I note the interesting advice sent out by one of Goldman Sachs chief global investment advisors last week on his retirement . He noted that 75% of all mutual funds return less than low cost , tax friendly stock exchange index funds over any given period of time( index fees avg 0.2 % per year- 30 times less than Aberdeen ) with fees being one of the key factors of mutual funds under performing relative to index funds. He told all of his ex

Clients that if they want a good return just buy into various western and emerging market index funds and leave for a few years- historically that returns higher than mutual funds and individual stocks.

so what I am doing is parking a chuck of my cash ( currently earning zero taking into account inflation) ad buying into some emerging market indexes ( smaller emerging markets in Africa. Latin America south easy Asia plus USA ) and sum blue chip dividend stocks in USA-

Most of this is not important to read but I'll add my skills. Thailand and Aberdeen is(after doing research) a cocktail of both - decent performance and safety. At least from what the current fund managers have been doing until date. We'll have a "benchmark" correction imminent of at least 10% so what counts is to see how they'll manage such sort of scenario and as far as my research goes back they did well comparatevely.

    To Phroenesis:

HFT and other sorts of computerized market manipulation is not present in Thailand (yet). Beyond that it is not the dominating force in the global markets these days but rather a measurement of desperation trying to fix things for the benefit of all (in favor of share markets) but unfortunately gold and bonds down in order to breed new investors. Trades are carried out that way but they serve a purpose which has not only bad sides.

We(eye) can clearly see that Japan for example is used as an essential tool to keep Asia balanced or better said to block China and it's expansion plans (can be discussed in detail if there is interest).

Thailand as ever is not important, no more than luring clueless people in in order to shake them out later.

Good thread anyway, didn't read much though.

  9. IrishIvan,

You keep mentioning that one reason the tuks-tuks are so great, is because they WAIT for their passengers, while they drink, eat, whatever ..for HOURS.

Have you neglected to ask yourself, WHY they wait? In my experience, all over Thailand, if you tell them, ask them, beg them, NOT to wait, they will wait for you anyway. Because they earn more by sitting on their ass for hours, waiting, and getting the return fare, then by actually working and looking for new customers. If, on the other hand, you ask them to wait, or agree to them waiting, they will also charge you for the waiting, as well as the return fare, but in almost no cases, when I have said, do not wait, I will not pay extra, they wait anyway.

This really isn't an added value they provide, except to themselves, especially when there are 50 other drivers randomly waiting, where you happen to be.

Sorry there isnt 50 tuk tuk drivers outside my house now. My mate just left with his family. If the taxi driver hadnt of waited for him then I would have had to give him a lift. And I dont really want to drive drunk with his family in the car. Good service IMO. I will PM you his number if you want a great Phuket taxi driver, we even had a few beers before he went off for some food. He was particularly angry about some of the articles and posts on TV after I explained to him what people were saying. He asked if I knew any of the people writing this about taxi drivers in Phuket. I said I dont know anyone on here, but I told him the Farang newspapers that were reporting this sort of stuff.

    ridiculous what you just said

  10. All the Thai Gold shops are SOLD OUT of bullion...next week will be a run to buy more. Thais love buying on dips and love showing off their bars of gold.

Soi 10 Sukhumvit shop has same prices as Chinatown.

Mr. Hong there is very honest. I've bought and sold hundreds of T.B. gold from him and never had one problem

Do NOT buy in Pattaya. .they will rape you on wiindow price and fees.

    PM me for any help.

I am not a gold bug. I would buy and sell sticks if there was a two way market and no paper trail.

maybe but that's not a buying that will change the price.

  11. Recognized that I am bored so I clicked this thread but not enough I even read the whole lot. First question came up was whether OP was bored as well. Second one was does he want to teach something or is he looking for a lesson. Next instead of 3rd to not sounding military was he scared or better said is he. Then in case all answered to his favor does he actually qualify to teach or is it a translation job.

Now in case he is just scared but with genuine intentions he has 2 options with the same result:

Do your lesson at Starbucks, wear suit and tie and insist your student to wear school uniform - nobody will care.

Do teach in privacy and pray that the CIA is not out hunting you for deciding on your own about what is right/wrong/good/bad - nobody will care.

So if you are a teacher you should be skilled in the ask-answer game because if you are then somebody will ask you and not the other way around.

If you think you can help then do it but if you are in fear then stay at home alone. You were already asked for help so what you gonna do teacher?

  12. I have always wondered why they call a decrease in gold & silver a correction in price when anyone that knows whats actually going on in the gold market knows how undervalued it is. My take is when the price of gold & silver increases thats the correction,we need to throw out this managed perception about markets & establish a new paradigm in what has real value.

A 100$ bill cost last time I looked 3 cents to make, gold averaged from miners all over the world it is 1290$ per troy ounce. It takes 10 years to establish a mine before they can even get the 1st ounce so what really has intrinsic value and lets not even talk about the digital currency created ctrl alt p.

    Gold vrs Paper your choice.

certainly you will end up very disappointed if you really believe that.

  13. Hi All.

I live on a small uk pension and private money and yes times are getting harder. Blame Thaksin..He is behind everything this Gov does.In the past he used the rice scam and he uses it again now, he hsed the same scam with lam yai, and go back to 97 when he made large amounts of Baht by telling the then PM to de-valueThaksin tends to use scams from the past if they were successful, Do not have a lot of money in your Thai Bank dollars pounds or anything , When Thailand is in the same boat as Greece and up to its eyes in debt,as sure as Thailand is Bhuddist Devaluation will happen and only Thaksin will make large amounts of money, You read it here first, and I have no Crystal Ball.

    fredro

No pun intended here but this is the typical mindset of the masses. Blaming others for a personal outcome. All what you are facing now is a chain of consequences for what you did and what you did not so it is not and never was they against us but always you against you. Take responsibility for your situation first then start to work on changing it and don't tell me you are too old or have no chances because it is never too late.

  14. funny thread, especially the post where somebody says there is 50 times more selling than buying. There is always as much of each otherwise the price would not move.

Bubble has started to burst but there is some tricky price action to follow which will cause much more pain to the unskilled. Guess after all this is over women won't like to wear a necklace anymore as it will appear so cheap compared to what it was before. Gold supposed to be a myth but unfortunately became a tulip, well well ...

  15. .

My use of the word "if" was done to please the readership here as just stating the fact that gold hit a 32 year high when priced in JPY would have met the normal misleading comments that gold is only priced in USD when clearly it's not.

In fact, at the twice daily gold price fixing in London, gold's price is fixed in EURO, GBP, and USD.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_fixing

and where would you think those prices are derived from? Sorry to say but you are wrong, Gold is a pure USD trade unless there is an unregulated over the counter deal. The prices you see quoted are with slight deviations rooted in currency exchange.

Certainly not going to argue it with you

    http://www.lbma.org.uk/pages/?page_id=53&title=gold_fixings

See for yourself what the LBMA does and how they fix the gold price twice daily and have been doing so since 1919. http://www.goldfixing.com/

As for the process they use to fix the price.. see here

Oil had been a pure USD based commodity until recently, perhaps you are confusing oil and gold?

yes must be that I have confused it with oil or maybe with pork bellies. But I do agree there is no point to argue further.
