  1. Read post #12

Be aware that if you exceed Australia’s duty-free

concession limits you will be charged duty and tax on all

items of that type (general goods, alcohol or tobacco), not

just the items which exceed the limits

Read the word Guide at the top, then read the Customs regs on declared and undeclared. That's it for me.Jim

Below is a quote from Customs By-Law when it was gazetted.

However, if the amount or value of the goods exceeds these new concessions, duty will be payable on the entire amount or value of the goods within that group of items. This is different from the previous by-laws where duty was only payable on the amount or value in excess of the concession. For example, if a passenger imports 3,000 ml of alcoholic beverages, 300 grams of tobacco products and $850 of other goods, he or she will have to pay duty in relation to the 3,000 ml of alcoholic beverages and 300 grams of tobacco. This is different from the previous by-laws where duty was only payable on the amount or value in excess of the concession.

  2. Customs value (Cval)

Customs duty (Duty)@ $0.34889 per stick

Value of the Taxable Importation (VoTI)

    (Cval+Duty)

Goods and Services Tax (GST) @ 10% of the VoTI

    Total payable Duty + GST

Customs duty of $0.34889/stick is the rate applicable as of 1/8/2012*

(Customs duty rates are subject to change. Please check the current published rates)

(Other import processing charges may apply)

You can work it out and so does the Customs Officer, plus he has to fill in all the forms etc, Not worth their time for a few dollars. Have been doing it for years, just too much bother for them on small amounts. Easier to fine someone for not declaring in the first place.

Don't know how the new rules will be enforce. Jim

When you arrive with 2 cartons and they are decalared you pay duty and GST on both cartons Well over $100.00 They will collect. I can assure you they do.

  3. Good win the Eagles.

Pity we don't get to watch next weeks Western Derby

    between Freo and WCE.

With the game being on a Sat, I thought it was a chance

to be shown but not to be.

    Regards

    Will

Didn't realize it was on the Saturday. A danger game, and a must win, for the Eagles if they are to have a chance. (only top 4 win premierships).

Freo has improved recently and are contenders for the hotly contested position 8 on the ladder. Could be a good game.

I like to watch West Coast live every week, so when the game's not on the OZ Network I use; http://www.afl.livesport.tv/

It's about 600 Baht/month or 300 Baht for 7 days and shows live streams of every game each round. Replays of each game seem to be available 8-12 hours after they have finished. The streams aren't always crystal clear but definitely more than watchable, if you like viewing your team every week.

On Friday 10/08 Australian Network is showing West Coast V Geelong at 1730. That unless they change their minds. That should be a good game.

  4. You have always been able to take twice the duty free tobacco allowance in without penalty as long as you declared them. The allowance was the undeclared amount.

This new allowance is alleged to make 250 to 500 mil in taxes, but I thought many of these agreements were international conventions, are we going it alone now. Jim

    That is incorrect.

  5. It is 50

    Has that come in already?

I thought they were making it 50?

I dont smoke but I always have requests from smokers to bring back what I can.

It is 50 and it is due to start on 1st September.

    http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4352.asp

From 1 September 2012, the traveller tobacco concession reduces. If you are aged 18 years or over you can bring 50 cigarettes or 50 grams of cigars or tobacco products duty-free into Australia with you. All tobacco products in accompanied baggage are included in this category, regardless of how or where they were purchased.

  6. I clip car mirrors all the time.

Not on, purpose, just because I want to get through.

It doesn't do any harm, I just pull my m/c mirrors back when at the front.

If car drivers don't like it, they can be a bit more considerate to m/c drivers.

What about consideration to car drivers. They are there ahead of you but you think you have a greater priority to be ahead of them. I think car drivers try to prevent bikes from moving ahead is to prevent damage they do to their vehicles. Have consideration to road users. Wait your turn.

  7. What does Westpac charge for the transfer? Is there a charge at the Thailand bank?

Westpac charge me $15.00 OZ for the transfer of $10,000 OZ. Bangkok Bank, NO charge.

Also no charge on the Bangkok Bank Debit Card if used in the Province your account is at, say Chonburi. If you use it outside the Province, or transfer cash to say Lop Buri they charge TB15.

Thanks for the reply. I was curious about other options compared to what I use. I use Ozforex and if over 10000 Aus there is no charge. I get it exchanged into Thai baht by Ozforex. Today the excharnge rate was 32.76 for 15000. This is a live quote and changes all the time. There is a charge this end with SCB. This can range from 200 to 850 baht depending on the amount transferred.

  8. Before you get married you have to go to MFA. There are many threads on this forum about marriage

    http://www.thaiembassy.com/marriage/marriage.php

    MARRIAGE PROCEDURES FOR FOREIGNERS:

Foreigners who are wishing to marry shall appear in person with their respective passports and arrival card at their Embassy in Thailand to complete declarations attesting that he/ she is single and free to marry in accordance with Thai Law and the registration shall be effected by a Thai Diplomatic or Consular Officer.

    • 1. Take the completed declaration to a reputable translation office to have the contents of the declaration translated into Thai.
    • 2. The documents together with translation and copies of passports have to be taken to the Legalization Division of Consular Affairs Department, where the Consular Official's signature will be authenticated. This normally takes 2 days. The documents and translation are then ready for submission to the District Registrar who will register the marriage and issue the marriage certificate in Thai in accordance with and following the procedure led down in Thai Law.

  9. Heroin, Ice Network Smashed In $500M Drug Bust

Federal Police say they have smashed a $500 million Hong Kong-based drug ring which was smuggling half a tonne of heroin and ice into Australia.

Overnight police arrested four men from Hong Kong at an apartment in central Sydney, and three Australian residents, also Hong Kong nationals, in Sydney's west.

The drugs - 306 kilograms of ice and 252 kilograms of heroin - were found hidden in 100 terracotta pots inside shipping containers during a raid at Port Botany nearly two weeks ago.

The containers had been shipped to Australia from Thailand.
