  1. Actually the one in the Night Bazaar was run by a very friendly and attractive Thai lady. :) In fact her stand is still there but only sells drinks and Turkish coffee now. I haven't seen her around recently.

Maybe we are thinking of different places, the one I am talking about was at the end of Loi Kroh almost at the Night Bazzar right next to the 7-11 - in a little tiny hole in the wall. Looked like it was run by the indian/nepali tailor mafia. food was horrible and I don't think it lasted long.

there is a guy who shows up sometimes at the sunday market in one of the wats, that makes a passable... shrawma - I think he told me that he had a shop somewhere, but I never bothered to go looking.

  2. Definitely avoid the Night Bazaar. The last shawarma stand lasted all of about 4 weeks there. The location that the others mentioned is the best central location.

And please offer chicken shawarma...whatever the dark colored meat the other place in Night Bazaar offered looked gross. We couldn't eat it.

    Chok dee!

I think it was supposed to be beef, and the places was run by indians. :) But it is impossible to get good beef in LOS, unless it is imported from NZ of course and then those will be some expensive sharmwas.

had high hopes about that last one, however inedible food and bad location for target customer base (backpackers, drunks, locals and local drunks - which one are you?)

There was also that place on chaing moi just past loi kroh, run by an arab. but that must have been 4 years ago, but was not the best, but closer to the bars so they survived a bit longer.

so we can all agree then, one chicken and one lamb and we will let you in.

  3. If you look around you will find that most brands are available with Ubuntu here in Thailand. I even saw a few laptops with Mint on them last weekend.

I think the reason that its done is to save Somchai some money. He would then take it around the corner and have an illegal copy of windows installed.

Unfortunate, yes. But at least us Linux users can buy decent hardware without paying the Microsoft Tax.

My next laptop will definitely have Linux pre-installed.

Ah ook, so these are the COmpaq official pre-installed and configured linux boxes? Meaning that everything should work out of the box? Yay!

  4. Thai politicians are pressuring Suvarnabhumi Airport's security staff to drop some pre-boarding screening procedures, even though this would breach global aviation security standards.

The move to lift the requirement for passengers to put their jackets and belts through X-ray machines before they walk through metal detectors is being spearheaded by Pichet Panwichartkul, a Democrat MP.

Mr Pichet has called the procedures an inconvenience for passengers and he is attempting to use his position as an adviser to the House standing committee on banking and finance to ease airport security, which has left security and airline managers dumbfounded.

actually it makes sense. he is most likely trying to protect the passengers from the pilfering security staff who distract you and riffle through your stuff.

    seriously.

  5. We were at Tesco in CM today and they had some Compaq laptops ranging from about 15k-23k and they all seemed to have Ubuntu Installed on them?

Obviously inquires to the sales girl as to whether this was a Compaq factory installed and configured Ububtu or by Somchai in the back room, were met with ... :)

but That is the question. What do we know about these? I would really LOVE to get my hands on a Compaq factory pre-configured Ubuntu laptop as I will know then EVERYTHING works!!!

But if it is a Somchai job, then I will stick with my own patchwork creation.

    Thoughts? Comments?

  6. Doubt it is possible, as it is paypal doing the US$ to Thai Baht conversion and then transfers Baht into your Thai bank account.

Thats what I was thinking too, but was hoping there is someone who actually tried it?>

Anybody have experience with HK or Sing Paypal accounts?

    can you withdraw in USD?

I have a friend who has lots of monies in his paypal and the paypal imposed exchange rate is killing him, not to mention the 125k a day limit on withdrawals to a thai bank account - so he is trying to figure out the best way to get teh monies withdrawn on a regular basis.

  7. Pie? Any good pies in Pai?

Cake-a-Gogo has really good cheesecake 60b a slice, though I havent seen pie in a while (assuming you are talking about the dessert and not that other type of pie in which case there are a few places we can direct you :) )

  8. Amidos pizza is one of the best in Thailand and highly recommended by Supermoderator sabaijai who has been just about everywhere including Italy.

Since you mentioned him and not your own opinion, I will say that I dont really agree with that particular persons opinions on many things regarding lodging or dining...

I do not always agree with him on food matters either - he has nothing good to say about the Duke's - but I ws pleasantly surprised by Amidos and there are not a lot of good pizzas around. :)

Amidos pizza isnt bad actually. I just think Christinas is way underrated because they had a bad rap a few years ago. as of today the pizza is the best I have found in asia. (and I have been to Italy too!)

A top place for Thai food is the 'Best Restaurant' a little out of town on the Mae Hong Son road. Excellent Tom Yum plaa and the deep fried mushrooms are worth writing home about!!

    Colin

I assume you are talking about the place in the big double shop-house

mmm. that place is really good, but probably too hard to find and rustic for tourists. cashew chicken is the best i have ever had and completely agree about the mushrooms

but how would anybody ever find it? in between the traffic light and the airport on the left in a big dumpy 3 story shophouse? look for the dog on the side of the dog?

btw... the owner there also has some really nice plots of land for sale at fair prices up near Huting Pai if you ask her nicely.

Since you mentioned him and not your own opinion, I will say that I dont really agree with that particular persons opinions on many things regarding lodging or dining... but no need to go into that and back to the pizza..

I eat at amidos for the steak and the lamb and its as good as any fancy french restaurant. but their pizza is average. Its a little hardy with eggs and anchovies. (I guess thats a french pizza)

however the christinas pizza or even the Latina pizza (on the river road) is much more geared toward traditional Italian fare.

    so I would say

    Amidos for the meats

Christinas for the Pizza, Calzone or Faggotini

and Latina for the Raviolis (mmmm!)

however that is just my opinion and I am a nobody really.

  10. they might be standing up to them, but pretty soon they will be standing down again. I cannot imagine promotions will be given to these "nobodies" just because they complained.

Research the history of the HK Police department a bit.

If Abhist can survive and be effective, these 'nobodies' will soon be running the police department.

  11. Hello,

I just arrived in Pai and am thinking about dinner. Where is a good place to eat (under 200-250), one person? Thai or farang food is fine. Or maybe there is something special here in Pai? I know nothing!

    Will be here 2 nights.

    Thanks,

    Luke

Charlie and Leks past the traffic light on the way to Beebop (across from Blue Lagoon) is the best Thai food

for a great lambchop, try Amidos which is near the same traffic light, but on the way to the river..

for a great pizza or italian food keep going all the way down to the river and you will find Christinas. ..

and for breakfast (before 8am) the Jop (rice soup) stand across for Aoy bakery is the best (buy from the guy with the straw hat and the moustache)

    that about does it!

  12. Military space or Royal grounds? Foreign embassy? Forgien country? Buddhist temple? Police station? Big mans estate?

the banned zone could be anything.

I used to play a cool computer game where your hero could hide in a 'sanctuary' and couldn't be attacked by other heroes while in there, though he had to stay put until the other hero went far enough away for him to make his escape

  13. I was looking at a Sony HDR Xr520 - and at pantip in the north, they were asking 60k baht pre-VAT

a quick check on Amazon shows it going for about $1200 - or about a 20,000 baht difference. . . (plus VAT)_

    ouch...

So how am I going to get this or a comparable prosumer camcorder for the best price? (I want Digital recording- no DV/DVDs)

does HK or Sing have them at US prices?

    is there another way?

somebody have one already want to sell ?

  14. I think its an ok rule. Whenever I go to a decent club, I expect to spend at least 300B in drinks - and usually open a bottle. So i would not even flinch, assuming it was made very CLEAR to me that this 300B is direct exchange for drinks. And more important done in a gentle manner that does not embarrass me.

I also understand well about Ki-nok falang and wanting to keep a good image in a club.

However a falang arriving with a group of thais and singling out the falang to charge and not the thais would be a little of a face-losing incident. So that would need to be considered and treded carefully. Thai people forget that Falang people also have face.

now consider if a group of 4 thai people arrived together and one was pulled aside and asked to pay. pretty embarrassing no?

  15. This is a very simple reason. Is when "criminals" are apprehended by police, the police man with the best creative writing abilities writes out their confession for them and then they beat them until they sign it.

    thats about it.

What gets me is when the police catch their victims they sing like canaries !,.look at this one guy telling them he bought in bulk in bkk, ,unbeleivable. :) "Samber said the drugs had been supplied by a dealer in Bangkok, who would ordinarily charge him Bt130,000 (about $US3,825) for a 500gm (about 17.64oz) bag.

He said he would then on-sell the drug in Pattaya for Bt3,500 (about $US103) for a three gram (about 0.1oz) bag, making a net profit of about Bt453,333 (about $US13,347) from the sales."
