  1. I don't think it was "wrong" or that they screwed up. Apple Maps is just a brand new app. That's all. It's in development. I think Tim Cook apologizing was unnecessary, but Apple wants to take care of their customers.

and that's NOT hype. I wrote an email to Tim Cook recently and had someone from Apple Education in singapore contact me the next day.

All he had to say was that Apple Maps is in development and that they should expect great updates to it in the coming months. That's it.

  2. I suppose that is OK if everybody in the world uses Apple but I suspect that is far from the case.

Personally if somebody gave the the latest iPad or iPhone the only thing I would do with it is sell it.

To me Apple is overhyped and overpriced.

Overhype? I don't think Apple promotes any more than other people. They do put themselves up, but doesn't everyone who wants to sell something?

Overpriced? I don't think so. All phones competing with the iPhone are priced the same. and I just bought a Macbook Air. All competitors, like ASUS and DELL, had laptops that were of lower quality and either they cost the same or they were more expensive.

  3. Seems like every other application I download try's to sneak a toolbar on. One needs to be super vigilant and read every check box carefully.

Thanks SamuiRes for the AVG Tools link.

Has the pendulum swung back to AVAST as the current best free Anti-Virus?

Nope. I say again, Microsoft Security Essentials is the best free antivirus for Windows. Period.

I ended up uninstalling AVAST because it was making my wife's laptop not being able to go to the desktop, and my computer was running weird too. I deleted that crap. Put Essentials on both laptops and never had to worry about anti virus programs, my computer running slow or viruses.

Do yourselves a favor. Delete all the free anti virus bloat out of your computer and go here

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

and forget about it. just enjoy the computer.

or do like I did, buy a Mac and forget about this entirely.

  4. Signing out now, thanks all for suggestions.

Was a learning exercise for me, especially as limited internet where I am (briefly, in Penang).

Data wasn't valuable. ExHDD case was metallic, felt very hot.

Couldn't mount HDD in linux (after installing 'usbmount').

Testdisk just said it was corrupted, wouldn't allow attempted partition rebuild etc.

In the end, the owner formatted it... and now it won't show up anywhere...

    'Cooked' sounds appropriate.

Operation a success, but patient died (or was already dead). AA

You done good, put up a great fight.

You said in 25 years you have NEVER been unable to recover data. What happened? Is this the first drive then? We should mark this one in your calendar.

In 15 years I have seen many drives that after hours and hours of messing around with recovery tools, it's just useless and the user ends up erasing everything. Either that, or the hard drive is done for.

    There you go... clap2.gif

Now, I will say again, I really hate these external drives and I don't trust them. Build a cheap PC. Nice motherboard, OK processor. Corei3 or whatever. Then, get a big Seagate and put it in there and that's your backup drive. Couple of terabytes maybe. I'm not saying that will never break, but I would trust that more than an external drive.

I built my desktop with an 80GB Seagate 7 years ago and it's still running smooth and fast.

My wife bought a Samsung 500GB external. Lasted about 3 weeks. The port where the USB cable went broke.

I had a guy in here the other day. He had gigabytes of work on his external. Just decided not to power up one day. Dead as a door nail.

  6. What are the things one would look for, for flood damage? How could you tell?

Dude, you can't tell anything. It could literally be 2 cars put together. Used cars here are so expensive, you might as well go into a Nissan Dealer and get an Almera brand new. Starts at 429,000 baht.

Buy NEW... NEW NEW NEW. It's yours. No story to tell.

  7. Procedure to buy a Used Car in Thailand:

Step#1 - Get a handful of KY Jelly.

Step#2 - Pull down your pants and underwear.

Step#3 - Bend over and spread your cheeks wide.

Step#4 - insert entire KY Jelly contents inside anal cavity.

Step#5 - Smile and let the salesman give it to you like a Soi Cowboy whore.

Drive home in what may be 1 car, or 2 cars put together and with surprisingly low miles! ALWAYS.

  8. One thing for sure. They are now going to make sure the Maps app becomes the ultimate mobile map option no matter what the cost and how much they need throw at it. I reckon 12 months from now it will destroy the competition.

I doubt they'll come close to matching Google in a year. They need to get the basics right first. It took Google many years to accomplish what they have now and they're a HUGE company.

    This is the real world

and this is the world according to Apple

If they were even close, I would agree with you, but in a year I just hope they're at least close to reality.

Of course you can recover. There are people who can recover data from computers that have been set on fire.

I'm a tech as well. I'm sure YOU can recover data, but who cares if YOU can? You're talking to regular people, not techs.

I already told him to go on google. There are tons of data recovery tools.

If you actually READ what I said, mr. 25 years in Tech, I was talking about him successfully repairing a RAW partition, not about recovering his files. That's something else. He can't ignore things I didn't say.

    Aarn,

I'm talking to you like a real guy. These techs think they know it all. I've been repairing and supporting computers for 15 years. I worked for gateway. I have an A+, Novell and MCSE certifications, and I like to speak to people like real people. Whenever you see these techs that come on here and think they know it all, trust me, they don't.

For example, this "tech" here is saying you can do everything with testdisk.

I'm saying, try, but if and when they don't work, forget it and nuke it. But of course, try. There are many utilities.

Now. It took me no more than 5 seconds to find this article

    http://forum.cgsecurity.org/phpBB3/ok-in-testdisk-but-raw-in-windows-t602.html

    And he says

"Using a Linux-based Partition Recovery boot CD, I can see the partition and all the files and directories without issue but under Windows it is listed as RAW although healthy. Under TestDisk, I can also see all files and directories.I've taken a few screenshots attached below:"

So even though his partition is unusable in Windows, TestDisk says its fine.

See? The real answer is, please try to repair this partition. Obviously it has been corrupted, and chances are you have a RAW patition. That's why it's saying to format it.

BUT, there's a chance nothing will work, including this guy's precious TestDisk.

Try to get in there and get the files out and as I said, don't waste your time. If it looks like it's just not working. NUKE the thing and save yourself hours of useless nonsense.

PS- hopefully testdisk or something else works for you.

  10. hehehehe...

    Windows...

agh...I am not going to troll and say how I don't care about this because I use a mac now. nothing gets installed here without a password and being form the app store. Also, everything here runs sandboxed. I hear Windows 8 is going to try and start copying that for "Metro Apps". Whatever. anyway...

as far as Windows, I can say for a fact that the very best antivirus solution is in fact the one Microsoft gives you. Microsoft Security Essentials. Install that. It's all you need. I got rid of AVAST and all that boloney. Set it. forget it. updated it once in a while.

This is how you keep your Windows machine clean in 3 easy steps:

1- PAY for a REAL copy of windows. It's not expensive. I bought mine for 3,600 baht. Home Premium 64bit. If you think the crackers are giving you Windows 7 all free and clean for your pleasure then you're really ignorant. It looks like this and you can buy it at any mall.

    product_135399.jpg

If you buy a laptop in thailand and they offer to put windows for an extra 300 baht, say NO.

    2- Download Security Essentials.

    3- stop downloading software torrents.

  11. a damp cloth is the best cleaner for a screen. Just a bit of water. that's it. there are many cleaners for screens and all kinds of things, but I'm telling you the way they taught me at computer school.

  12. forget it. if you double click it and it says it wants to format it, then the file system has been corrupted on this partition. If you right click it and go to properties, is the file system still NTFS or FAT? or does it say "RAW"?

If you can't back it up, it's a done deal. Format as NTFS and redo the file system.

You'll get a bunch of replies saying to try this fix and that fix. Go ahead and try but don't keep your hopes up.

    Partition%20Properties%20RAW.PNG

If it's like that, go to Google and try the 1,001 fixes available for how to recover/repair a RAW partition. When they don't work, nuke the drive and start over.

I hate external drives. I have USB sticks and my computer. My SSD is less likely to fail than one of those externals. or just build a good cheap computer with 2 1TB Seagates and use that as backup.

  13. With my City I did what the dealer said. Bring it in every 10,000km. When it was out of warranty, B-Quick used to ask me which oil I wanted. I said the best one. Most expensive. Usually they would say that was the 10,000km one.

My Cruze has every 15,000km. I pay more because it's more oil of course. They put that Synthetic GM oil on there. Costs me like 4,500 baht or something like that.

Just do what the manufacturer says.

  14. He admitted the maps are shit.

    http://bits.blogs.ny.../tim-cook-maps/

    My favorite part is:

While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

He said "we took Google Maps out, so just go to the website and use it again. We suck. I guess they didn't learn from Antennagate.

They'll sell a billion iPhone 5's anyway. He doesn't care.
