I also borrowed their cars before I could afford my own. The reason I didn't borrow their scooter is because they didn't have one. All the families in my neighborhood made enough money that we didn't have to rely on scooters to get around. I'm sure every parent who's ever lost a child to a scooter wreck wishes they had strapped their kid into a seatbelt instead of throwing a leg over a scooter. Back home that was just expected. In Thailand, economics make that a luxury. It's certainly not that Thai parents don't love their kids.

Stories like this confirm my contention that Thai laws prohibiting foreigners from buying land are a humane gesture.
