I know the policy is that English teachers should not speak Thai in the classroom, and some schools prefer their farang teachers to be ignorant of Thai, but in all the teaching jobs i have had (corporate, private and university) I find speaking Thai (or at least knowing how, so appreciation of the grammar differences) make my job much easier. I personally feel all English teachers should make reasonable effort to learn the native language of the country their teaching in. A teacher can bang their head off the wall for a whole class, or just explain in Thai and move forward.

The fine is 2000 baht. they talk about higher amounts so you think you are lucky to pay just 2000 baht. Technically you don;t have to pay, as they are not actual police, but it could take a long time before they let you go free. Look in the old posts, this has been discussed dozens of times. Only happens in tourist areas and they only target tourists.
Excellent.next time ask for the official fine in writing and pay it at the proper office. otherwise you are supporting these police mafia.
But they was waving ฿10000 fine in my face so was trying to minimise that.
Made them write me a receipt though for what good it will do. -

Give the parents enough money so that they don't have to go work, or can hire a nanny, I am so they would be so pleased you would hear the cheers from your perch in your Ivory tower.
I think you are so wrong! It is common practise in Thailand for a couple or single mother to dump their children on their parents and leave to another city to work. This does not make it right simply because it is done on large scale here.UNICEF does not understan Thailand.
Leavin a child behind to an elder prevents a child from learning anything except what was learned 50 years ago. It may well be the reason Thais are not creative or imaginative.
It does however leave the child with someone who is already lacking in developmental skills. Although I am not sure about the communicative skills being affected. I do think that emotional growth can be dererred. How can a baby understand the absence of a mother they bonded with at birth or a family they only see on weekends?

I am more often approached by Brits who claim to have been mugged (while they were pissed at Soi Cowboy, as if this will gain sympathy) who need 500 baht for a phone card to ring up their mum to send them money. I have had this con attempted more than ones by Thai people.

The degree is fine as long as you don't actually try to use it or have it recognized.

If your coming on a high-end expat package you will have more money than you need and should hire someone locally to get you sorted out in Thailand, the "help" you get on this forum will vary in usefulness....

Agree completely with OP. Never any drama and never lost a baht in over a dozen relationships (ranging from a few months to several years). The people who complain about gold diggers or getting screwed over either didn't know what they were getting into, or tried to play games with people way more qualified than them. I think most of us get what we deserve...but your mileage may vary.

Manarom are nothing but pill pushers. Thai psychiatry is about keeping the patient stoned. The only good one I know in BKK, who studied abroad, is Dr. Thanni at Bangkok Nursing Hospital near Lumpini. He is located in internal medicine and a standard office visit is about 2500 baht. His English is good.

People go where the work is, there is a lot of work in Bangkok, elsewhere, not so much.

I moved from BKK to Phuket and paid a driver and helper 5k plus gas. Shop around

After too many times of trying to help out, or give solid advice to a tourist or recent expat and not only not being appreciated, but being giving the "yeagh yeagh, I know everything about everything already" response, I let them crash and burn on their own. you can't fix stupid.

No excuse at all, but at the same time, poverty drives people to extreme and dysfunctional behavior. In a country where children go to bed hungry and the elderly beg in the street, every time i see somebody (Thai or farang) loading their shopping bags full of high-end garbage into their Mercedes, I want to puke.

Had the same type of situation with a "dirty Harry" wannabe cop volunteer in Phuket, Little Kiwi twit tried to run me off the road and he was the one who scurried off in the end. Felt sorry for him as he wasnt even important enought to have a radio to call for help. Slimy little toads in my opinion, but maybe some good ones, just never met one.

OP is right, repsponaibility to children is very low in Thailand by their fathers. Anyone who doesnt know that needs to get off the tennis court at their condo once in a while and learn about this country. And David? why is it you always depand proof when others make statments, but generally talk out your bum in your 50 posts a day?

Just some issues to arise form the OP ...
"Men will pay millions in child support payments following custody judgements." ... since you are using a Western example, lets presume that you are referring to either Dollars or Pounds.
Millions ... don't you think that the statement is a bit of a stretch? Stats to back up that claim?
"I've simply never seen such a lack of care in any other culture." ... you've personally visited every other Culture?

With A Thai DL (and sometimes without) and speaking Thai, I almost always (95%) get the local price.

Cheap hotels near the bus station for around 250 a night (air and hot water). But no English signs, so speaking thai helps.

500 baht is the normal police station fine, he would have settled for 200, the normal street bribe. I got stopped and issued a ticket for 500 for immediate payment, when I went to the payment table I said no have 500, have 200. told: no problem... Need to learn to negotiate.

To those who think its not big money, give me some of yours... Seriously, 10 mil baht is 100 years pay for the average Thai person. DO the math.
