  1. To state fact, a foreigner cannot hold a job that a thai person can reasonably do, so only management, or jobs that require English skills. Never seen a foreigner working in a hotel in anything less than management. And their are many "experienced" hotel managers here who will work cheap.

  2. The outcome of this was a rich kid in daddy;s porsche. He ran away to Cambodia long enough to pass a blood test, then came back, said "oops" and threw some money at the poor mother. Case dropped.

    Okay I''ll add another,

Laotian girl cut in half by speeding Porsche

Pathum Thani - A 17-year-old Laotian girl was cut in half by a speeding Porsche car when crossed the road here Friday afternoon.

Police quoted a witness as saying that the girl, who was a worker of a foods shop, was crossing the road back from a noodle shop where she bough her lunch when she was hit.

The accident happened at 2:30 pm on the Pathum Thani-Bang Bua Thong Road in front of Parichart Housing Estate in Muang district.

Initially, only the lower half of her body was found in the ditch in the middle of the road.

Later on, her upper half was found on the seat near the driver seat in the car, which was left about 10 kilometres from the scene. It crashed through the windshield and landed on the seat.

Police said the car has been stolen and the driver was fleeing.

  3. "I got the car washed, oil and oil filter changed for Bt 900" hate to tell you, but....oh.nevermind.

I actually quite like it here, but I can understand your issues, just that I don't share them.

Mind you, it would be nice if the land ownership laws were changed to allow a modest domestic holding.

I'm OK with the Falang term, as it's only a descriptor, rather then a racial slur. It's certainly a polarising comment here.

It was fun watching the Father-in-Law go from 'you', to 'Somchai', to ''Davis' to 'David Bekham' (when he was in a playfull mood) to 'Khun Da' ... I'm Family now ... rolleyes.gif alt=rolleyes.gif>

There is a system of duel pricing ... sure. But that is more based on the Thai's ability to make a judgement on whether you can pay more, or not. They would try it on with a wealthy Thai. When ever my car gets repaired, the Father-in-Law keeps me out of sight so the price isn't inflated. Do I get ripped by her old man? ... nope. I got the car washed, oil and oil filter changed for Bt 900 and the old filter shown as proof.

Comes down to trust and getting the respect of the immediate Thai Family, that's how I've overcome many of the issues you espouse in the OP.

'Why should we stay?', because the frustrations you feel here are, on balance, less then the other viable alternatives ... though I do understand your frustrations.

  4. The trend is to go to university for 4 years then not get a job, unless your parents already won a company. Thailand graduates something like 800,000 students a year, to fill 1000 jobs. That is the reason a 4 years Thai degree is worth about 6000 baht more than you can make at 7-11. When when the other Asians come here for jobs in a year or two, Thailand is truly $^#%#.

  5. True, she may find a job now (at 50% the normal pay) because schools are desperate, but they will likely replace her with a NES as soon as they can. Thailand is all about appearance and they like their English teachers, tall, young and white. Ability does not really matter here.

She may have all the qualifications and even be good at teaching, but it will be a miracle if she finds a good well paid job at any international school. Even if she was born and educated in a native english speaking country. I may be wrong, but that is my gut feeling.

  6. Targeting the people of the south will not get attention with the criminals leaders in charge of thailand. Not that I am making suggestions, but eventually they will get smart enough to target Patong, Pattaya, or MBK if they really want to make an impact. Amazes me it hasn't happened. Also amazed the Army is still so unconcerned after 20 years. More have dies there than in all the Burma / Cambodia border conflicts.

  7. Understood, most Expats i have met are either raging drunks (even the ones with jobs) or completely selfish, arrogant and self-absorbed. The relationships are based on "what can you do for them?" Most of the social groups I have seen are just reasons to get drunk, and while volunteering is good in theory, its almost impossible to find real volunteer opportunities in BKK. Maybe post what part of the city you live in and you will get some direct messages from like minded people?

  8. I dont think it meant he came off the 2nd floor, but his head came of on the 2nd floor balcony. Doesn't say what floor he stared on. Booze/drugs + pattaya + "I'm on holiday, I am immortal!!!" = tragedy. Seen it too much.

Don't forget.......the 2nd floor of the Hilton is in actual fact on an 8th floor level........Hilton is built on top of Central Festival Beach with the Hilton Carpark on the 6th floor (of Central)

    Anyway.........sad story.

Generally speaking, Ice is considered a Hi-so drug by Thais with money, while Ya-ba is considered Lo-so. Both ruin lives but one costs more.

Who are the primary consumers of Ya Ice?

    Do Farang use it frequently?

Its the same thing as Crystal Meth? A drug made and consumed in the hillbilly regions of the US? That causes teeth to rot out?

    Or is it something different?

Mostly Thais, but also many foreigners are consuming it. Especially at places like Ko Phanghan.

It is the same as Chrystal meth.It damages not just teeth, it burns out brains,etc..
