To state fact, a foreigner cannot hold a job that a thai person can reasonably do, so only management, or jobs that require English skills. Never seen a foreigner working in a hotel in anything less than management. And their are many "experienced" hotel managers here who will work cheap.

I feel the problem is basically, because most jobs are restricted to Thais, the lack of competition lead to laziness. Why bother teaching more than needed, since the students will only have to compete with students from other Thai universities. All will change in the near future and many Thais will see their previously "safe" jobs going to other Asians. Then the schools will have to actually try to raise the bar. I worked with an "office manager" who had a degree in IT and computer networking, but took him 3 months to figure out how to hook up our office printer. However, he slept with the Dutch owner and now he has a new Ducati and a new Toyota, so I guess some skills are more valuable than others...

Yep, he's spot on. Just that some people can;t handle not being at the top of food chain anymore. Many flights out every day.
If you line up 100 random Asian women and 100 random caucasian women, the Asians will always average about 7/10 between them. The caucasians, 4/10 average. For me, anyway.
I'm sure all those women really value your opinion, Lloyd.

The outcome of this was a rich kid in daddy;s porsche. He ran away to Cambodia long enough to pass a blood test, then came back, said "oops" and threw some money at the poor mother. Case dropped.
Okay I''ll add another,

Laotian girl cut in half by speeding Porsche
Pathum Thani - A 17-year-old Laotian girl was cut in half by a speeding Porsche car when crossed the road here Friday afternoon.
Police quoted a witness as saying that the girl, who was a worker of a foods shop, was crossing the road back from a noodle shop where she bough her lunch when she was hit.
The accident happened at 2:30 pm on the Pathum Thani-Bang Bua Thong Road in front of Parichart Housing Estate in Muang district.
Initially, only the lower half of her body was found in the ditch in the middle of the road.
Later on, her upper half was found on the seat near the driver seat in the car, which was left about 10 kilometres from the scene. It crashed through the windshield and landed on the seat.
Police said the car has been stolen and the driver was fleeing.- 1

How many posts have I read with "I was considering doing the right thing, but I didn't, but I should still get credit for thinking about it..."

"I got the car washed, oil and oil filter changed for Bt 900" hate to tell you, but....oh.nevermind.
I actually quite like it here, but I can understand your issues, just that I don't share them.
Mind you, it would be nice if the land ownership laws were changed to allow a modest domestic holding.
I'm OK with the Falang term, as it's only a descriptor, rather then a racial slur. It's certainly a polarising comment here.
It was fun watching the Father-in-Law go from 'you', to 'Somchai', to ''Davis' to 'David Bekham' (when he was in a playfull mood) to 'Khun Da' ... I'm Family now ... alt=rolleyes.gif>
There is a system of duel pricing ... sure. But that is more based on the Thai's ability to make a judgement on whether you can pay more, or not. They would try it on with a wealthy Thai. When ever my car gets repaired, the Father-in-Law keeps me out of sight so the price isn't inflated. Do I get ripped by her old man? ... nope. I got the car washed, oil and oil filter changed for Bt 900 and the old filter shown as proof.
Comes down to trust and getting the respect of the immediate Thai Family, that's how I've overcome many of the issues you espouse in the OP.
'Why should we stay?', because the frustrations you feel here are, on balance, less then the other viable alternatives ... though I do understand your frustrations.

The trend is to go to university for 4 years then not get a job, unless your parents already won a company. Thailand graduates something like 800,000 students a year, to fill 1000 jobs. That is the reason a 4 years Thai degree is worth about 6000 baht more than you can make at 7-11. When when the other Asians come here for jobs in a year or two, Thailand is truly $^#%#.

True, she may find a job now (at 50% the normal pay) because schools are desperate, but they will likely replace her with a NES as soon as they can. Thailand is all about appearance and they like their English teachers, tall, young and white. Ability does not really matter here.
She may have all the qualifications and even be good at teaching, but it will be a miracle if she finds a good well paid job at any international school. Even if she was born and educated in a native english speaking country. I may be wrong, but that is my gut feeling.

Yet to see a Cambodian NGO (not the local, but international run) that was not a scam, a gravy train for the director, or a "good ol boy" club staffed by all their golfing buddies.

Not sure, but my guess would be at the shops that sell the relifous items, usually outside the temples. Maybe around the temple at Ekamai?

Actually, my contract ends next month, which is why I am even reading the e-mails. Personally, I have never broken a contract. Thanks for the attention, but next time, think before you judge. Thank you.
From the OP: "I have a current job, but am always willing to consider a more rewarding or more professional school. However, the current batch of recruiters have been just pathetic."
You complain about a lack of professionalism, but you are prepared to break your current contract if you can get more money somewhere else. Don't you consider the damage you do to your school, students and fellow teachers when you break a contract? You signed your current contract, and you agreed to its terms and conditions.

Targeting the people of the south will not get attention with the
criminalsleaders in charge of thailand. Not that I am making suggestions, but eventually they will get smart enough to target Patong, Pattaya, or MBK if they really want to make an impact. Amazes me it hasn't happened. Also amazed the Army is still so unconcerned after 20 years. More have dies there than in all the Burma / Cambodia border conflicts.- 1

As i posted before. Now is the time when all the schools who pissed around the last 3 months realize they don't have enough teachers to cover the school year. I, and many teachers I know are being called and e-mailed daily with desperate messages. However, the behavior they normally exhibit confirms my suspicion that they are crap schools / agencies to work for. Typical behaviors i have seen are:
- We want you to interview tomorrow morning and need to travel 600km at your own expense for the privilege.
-They send a barely readable emails with no details and when responding with any questions, they never reply (guess they don;t want any "trouble makers".
- They make aggressive statements in their offers "Don't disappoint us" "If we decide your good enough to work for us" "you must" "you will have to" and I even had one e-mail that the salutation was simply "You".
- They claim it is urgent, but they don't increase the wage offer.
- Almost none of the current jobs offer accommodation as they used to.
I have a current job, but am always willing to consider a more rewarding or more professional school. However, the current batch of recruiters have been just pathetic.

I think you could shave a little off the food and phone card. Would be tight but possible.

If you have a contract signed by both parties, you have some recourse with the ministry of labor, but it will take forever to sort out and the school will try to discredit you. Best to say either follow the contract or you walk, but only have this conversation after the have paid your most recent salary.

Understood, most Expats i have met are either raging drunks (even the ones with jobs) or completely selfish, arrogant and self-absorbed. The relationships are based on "what can you do for them?" Most of the social groups I have seen are just reasons to get drunk, and while volunteering is good in theory, its almost impossible to find real volunteer opportunities in BKK. Maybe post what part of the city you live in and you will get some direct messages from like minded people?

I dont think it meant he came off the 2nd floor, but his head came of on the 2nd floor balcony. Doesn't say what floor he stared on. Booze/drugs + pattaya + "I'm on holiday, I am immortal!!!" = tragedy. Seen it too much.
Don't forget.......the 2nd floor of the Hilton is in actual fact on an 8th floor level........Hilton is built on top of Central Festival Beach with the Hilton Carpark on the 6th floor (of Central)
Anyway.........sad story.

I work in the field and have met "qualified" teachers with the right degree, that are shit teachers. I have also met some with nothing more more than a 4-week TEFL certificate that are really good. I think a passion for teaching and caring about the students is more important than having the right qualifications. Even dodgy teachers care more about learning than the school management. As far as non-NES, I have met some ESL people who speak better English than some native speakers...just saying.

I don't know. I am always grateful of the foreigners and tourists that support my lovers. So I don't have to.

Generally speaking, Ice is considered a Hi-so drug by Thais with money, while Ya-ba is considered Lo-so. Both ruin lives but one costs more.
Who are the primary consumers of Ya Ice?
Do Farang use it frequently?
Its the same thing as Crystal Meth? A drug made and consumed in the hillbilly regions of the US? That causes teeth to rot out?
Or is it something different?Mostly Thais, but also many foreigners are consuming it. Especially at places like Ko Phanghan.
It is the same as Chrystal meth.It damages not just teeth, it burns out brains,etc..

I have a few contacts from them. They usually want you to drop everything and come interview with 4 hours notice. I pass on dealing with agencies that show no consideration for their "clients".
