It is the low season. Perhaps it only looked busy as a result of the masses of vendors cluttering the place up.
Khao San lost its charm long before this happened but It seems to have generational appeal. Maybe it will morph itself into something different again.

This story says more about the Thai justice system than about the perpetrators.

So true. But he is still a di#khead. Maybe he’ll learn from it.
That said his punishment is over and above some that has been dished out to some locals for more horrific crimes. We are soft targets that are easily milked as dry as a witch’s tit.

50,000 is excessive. Perhaps impound the bike and release it to someone with a license after the fine is paid. Perhaps 2000 to 5000 would be enough.
A monthly sale of bikes that haven’t been collected to pay off owed fines. A similar program for drunk drivers should keep the coffers full.

In civilized countries policemen doing their duty are rewarded by receiving their fairly levelled monthly salary.
And there in the problem lays. Man cannot live on peanuts alone.

Why is it funny? You and your like have been asking for something like this for years. Now someone has said it is going to happen, your stupid comment. Stop Thai bashing and wait to see what happens.
I understand your sentiment and would like to think something may come of this but history has shown that, in Thailand, talk is very cheap and is designed to sell an idea of something being done. There is no stomach to take it to the next level and no one with the balls to champion it.
I look forward to this new push bearing an outcome that the headlines allude to but the skeptic in me says they aren’t up to the task as it requires a certain amount of non existent commitment by the main players.

In my many years in Thailand, I have NEVER EVER seen any seller check, if my signature matches the one on the card. Not just here. In oz I used to insist they check just to remind them of their obligations. Now it’s chips and PINs.

300000 baht was the budgeted price. Much cheaper to build it as a wall.
150000 baht into someone’s pocket. It’s the Thai way.

Note to self. Never forget to carry my license with me. This may well have painted a bigger bullseye (or baht sign) on my back.
That being said, something other paltry fines is required to get people thinking about their behaviour on the roads.

What about if you run over a cop? What’s the penalty for that?
Nothing

Wow. What would they do to real criminals?
Oh that’s right. Very little. Let this be a lesson about the necessity to hand over those brown envelopes.

Laws made by the rich for the rich means this sleaze has a good chance of walking free with little punishment and will be free to kill again at his leisure.
