Dangerous blue-ringed octopus found in seafood in Thailand
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Why do people feel the need to eat such exotic foodstuffs? Typically a Chinese/Asian thing. It’s this wet market messing about with animals that has brought lovely delights like covid19 and gawd knows what else. Leave them be! If you can’t get it up, try viagra of a leech! -
What a load of old mawkish twaddle. Most Thais make absolutely F all from them. If they did, then since covid they should have diversified and got into weed. I see you also defend the Russians and Indians. How’s about the Mongolians and Vietnamese? If you’ve got skin in the game and your business depends on these fine folk, then fair enough. If not, then see above; mawkish twaddle.

Highly unlikely, bring it in with laptop bag as opposed to new box. If they checked everyone that brought in laptops, you'd never get beyond customs. Have brought several new ones in over the years.

Let’s hope that safety concerns plague the minds of Chinese tour operators for years to come!

Marriage extension not ready yet.
daveAustin replied to bob smith's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Apparently he was going to go on a 100k bender from the sale of his watch (folex? ) so can't be short of a bob (pun intended). Retirement ext is done and dusted in 30m or so, none of this going back and going back. I don't get it. -
Bank transfer after 1st Jan or now?
daveAustin replied to kwak250's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Indeed, but if you were going to transfer in a few months anyway, is it not best to do so now to remove all doubt? -
Marriage extension not ready yet.

Don’t get why you mince about with marriage extensions, Bob, since you’re clearly of an age and apparently well off… -
Make sure you count your change
daveAustin replied to delgarcon's topic in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
7-11s are generally good, but recently got shafted for 100 baht by bent staff member. Thought it odd that change amount didn’t appear on the till at the time, and it was a rare occasion that I hadn’t totted up in my head or counted the change. Only realised later and thinking back this particular person has done it before. Walked back in there at a future date and in front of everyone pointed at her doing the ‘looking at you with the eyes’ thing and proclaimed “I know what you did!” Might not have made a difference as a thief is a thief, but at least she lost a bit of face and knows that someone knows how clever she is not. -
Irishman’s life hangs by a thread after mosquito bite in Thailand
daveAustin replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
I would be similar (just shoot me) but yours is old person thinking. This is a young chap and most likely never had the choice. Dengue complications can be nightmarish, internal bleeding etc. But yes these private hospitals make a packet in these scenarios. Hope the lad pulls through. -
Reason I got my kids out for the matayom years and put up with the West. The whole flag/anthem and standing outside ‘to attention’ debacle is such a massive waste of students’ time, not to mention damaging. Yes, the system is naff but individual schools go out of their way on this aspect to appear to be doing it ‘best’, LOUDEST. Face face face! Having kids scream and make as much noise as possible, playing silly games etc… what a good lesson in life. Get them in the class ffs and teach them! Thai kids have the aptitude for it, just need to get them away from this system and arrogant crapola teachers. If all schools here were be like Prem in Chiang Mai, Thais could be world leaders in pretty much every area. But of course the fragile, bent powers that be wouldn’t want that. Pfft!

daveAustin replied to kwak250's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
^^^ Prove it. -
Agreed. Might have been some truth to it many moons ago, but certainly not today.
-
I have it for this reason. Any issue, just call them up.

Each to their own, but have personally always done it by the book... what I may lose on interest by not having it in a foreign bank is of little interest (pardon pun) to me since I prefer the peace of mind. My extension takes me about an hour, including copying etc. If they clamp down on anything, it will be the visa shenanigans/discrepancies first as highlighted in the OP.

Anutin Orders Strict New Year Road Safety Measures

Never mind all that, just put everyone in sobering up areas. 👍 -
Thai rice purity at risk due to popularity of foreign strains
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Ooh, can’t have those alien rices! Thais don’t do aliens well of any kind. Maybe they’ll mix it with some Cambodian and make it even better. 😜 -
The fall of Minneapolis.
daveAustin replied to Kinok Farang's topic in US & Canada Topics and Events
We always had S politicians (everyone does; show me a good one... look at the state of Thailand, China, the US, Canada, AUS, NZ, Israel, Turkey, Argentina and on and on), but the current crop are pretty benign compared to the sad surrendering Blair days which brought us to this point with the migrant mess. No particular love for a party, but any of them having to steer through Brexit, COVID, BLM etc is going to get it 'wrong', and not forgetting the whole world has changed. British police are still the best in the world btw. Don't let the current state of wokeness and inability for them (and government) to do anything to cloud that. You can still stop them and talk to them on the street without getting shot! I get the false angst, but would avoid blaming everything on government (that is a copout) or others... being a boomer, all this mess is you guys' doing in both UK and US. You lot bled these countries and made them what they are! Enjoy your movie. -
Grab a few cheap shots on Suk pavement and watch the world go by and/or half bottle white spirit from 7, then do the cheaper bars along Soi 4 if you need oiling up before charming the ladies and blowing the remaining 1000 () on half a bell ring.

I don't know why you guys do it to yourselves multiple times. One marriage is enough for any sane man, surely? I would require absolute bliss to go down that route again. Freedom is just too sweet. Anyway, weren't you on about quitting Thailand a while back?
-
Used to think CoD was great but never use it now. Getting shafted aside, just too much hassle that I have to be there to receive the thing, + I don't like the way I feel when I don't tip.
-
Just not worth the time, effort and angst (will it conk out, how was it treated etc?) over buying new, esp since vehicles really hold their value here. You might save a couple hundred bucks on something that is several years old, but lose loads of time doing it. Just get yourself down Honda, say 'I'll have that one' and buy cash. Having said that, I have bought secondhand, albeit a great price on a bike in excellent condition, but wouldn't again unless it was a real bike at a steal. Oh, and yes, the Scoopy is a bit girlie.

Thai restaurant owner loses 600,000 baht during family trip to France
daveAustin replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
All very possible for those not used to travelling in foreign climes, and Thais are generally polite and obliging by default (and typically decent middle class and up folks holidaying overseas), so easy pickings for thieving scum. Paris is a bit of a hole like that and has only gotten worse with the massive influx of undesirables--no, I understand they're not all bad, but many pile in to do this kind of thing. Guess they won't be going to froggyland again for a bit. -
It’s not just external, or internal, problems. The TAT always comes out with lofty grandiose schemes to rake in ‘trillions of baht’ but flip-flops every 5 minutes and never tells it how it is. “We expect record breaking visitors”, “visitor number are down but will treble by the end of the year”, “millions will come from China”, “there is a downturn in visitor numbers”, “no there isn’t, we’re gonna have a bumper high season”, “screw foreigners, locals will make up the shortfall!” The whole thing should be disbanded and run by someone competent, like an 8th grade school kid!
