Experts say that supplies almost 30% of the goods needed by all nations.  You can't cut off that much supply without serious global repercussions.

I agree 100%, we live in a just in time world now, maybe my wife and I should stock up on some canned goods and pet food as apparently some survival experts say that good dog food will see humans through a crisis ( I think they mean sacks of dried food). We also have some fruit trees.

  2. from another article on accuweather

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, there have been more worldwide new recoveries than new confirmations of coronaviruses cases for six straight days. On Feb. 22, more than 4,000 cases were deemed recovered, the highest recovery day on record for the virus. Around the world, there have been over 25,000 cases of recovery since the beginning of the outbreak.

For comparison, there have been an estimated 16 million cases, 160,000 hospitalizations and 9,400 deaths from the flu in the United States, according to CDC data, since Jan. 11, the date of the first reported fatality from COVID-19, as recorded by the China state media and shared by the Xinhua news agency.

Both of you guys have made some real "iffy" comments I'm sorry to point out.

First off, very little is really known about the COVID-19 virus at this point.  Nothing is really known about whether it thrives better in cold or warm environment.

Same is true for how it reacts outside of the body, and while there are some similarities with the SARS virus, COVID is a brand new coronavirus and you can't really say whether it reacts the same as SARS or not in this regard.  Some rough studies have suggested longer active time outside of the body than a few hours but nothing conclusive.

Smoking has not been definitely been shown to have an effect one way or another on getting the virus; only some statistical suggestions but from from being conclusive.

I don't think it is so irresponsible to say the COVID is more infectious than Influenza.  It actually could be much more infectious if some of the R0 studies that have been conducted lately prove to be correct.

The Basic Reproductive Number (R0) for Influenza (the 1918 pandemic strain) was 2.0 - 3.0 (median 1.8).  The median R0 for seasonal flu is 1.28

For Covid-19, it is not really well understood yet but most trusted estimates place the R0 between 2-3.  However, some studies indicate it could be as high as 6.6.

I get a lot of flack everytime I say this about the R0 possibly being that high, so here are the sources for that assertion:

The point really should be that COVID-19 is a highly dangerous and infectious pathogen by any benchmark, especially when you consider that it can be spread by asymptomatic people, many of which don't even realize they are infected.  What has happened on the Diamond Prince should make that very clear.

Again, this assertion that it can spread from asymptomatic people still seem controversial, but seriously, look at what's happening on the cruise ship (which has been described as a "floating petri dish of infection"), what is happening in South Korea, Japan, Iran, and of course, China.  It would be impossible to acknowledge the numbers without it being shed by asymptomatic people.

Anyway, I think it's safe to say this virus is dangerous without doubt.  All the details of how and why are just going to take time to really understand.

I'm going to repeat a link, this is about a pathology professor in Hong Kong who had experience of SARS.

It was originally a private briefing for investment analysts. It might be nearly 2 weeks old but I think with his expertise it's still relevant.

    Thank you.

And about the photos, did you gave the photos you, your wife AND a thai witness ?

I don't understand what you're asking, do you mean did we allow photos to be taken in the house with a witness by the imm officer?. If so the answer is yes but not as intrusive as last year and the imm officer seemed to want to open a coffee shop with my sister in law. If you're asking about pictures we gave as part of our application to the immigration office no, just my wife and I plus dogs & cats.

I have to renew my extension this month, someone can confirm: a thai witness is no more required at Jomtien immigration office?

did my extension a few days ago in Rayong and no witness required because of no child but the day after we had a house visit and was asked for a witness. I will say the house visit was very relaxed and the imm officer got on very well with us. last year had a visit and he must have been hiso imm because he had a 5 series beemer but without the trick stuff they have now and his questioning was intrusive at times.

  6. In Rayong the Kor Ror 22 is only valid for 3 years and the pictures didn't need to be on glossy paper but we have been refused once when they didn't consider the quality high enough.

CW will want a copy of your updated bank book to prove the 400k is still in the bank when you go back to get your one year extension stamp.

The five extensions we have done have never required this, we just go and get the extension stamp.

Ha, I don't want to post something that might be classed as 'scaremongering' but yesterday I read an article by the Chairman of the Hong Kong Health Committee (via the Guardian Newspaper but I actually read it in a journal)). He said that this virus could infect 60% of the world's population and kill about 50 million people, that is, if it isn't halted. The 60% part isn't that bad because many might get infected and not know it as the symptoms might be mild and not be much of a problem. But killing 50 million...that's quite another 'kettle of fish' as they say. 'Stop the world I want to get off' might be appropriate here.

I read earlier that a pathology professor in Hong Kong was interviewed and he said that the corona virus and similar one's like sars don't like heat and high humidity so the epidemic should drop off in May.

  8. Did my marriage extension renewal at Rayong immigration yesterday, 5th marriage extension, and we got a phone call lunchtime today that we would be getting a visit in an hours time. The officer was very friendly and even though a witness wasn't required at immigration he requested one at the house so my wife called her friend who had the same officer visit their house last week when my wife was the witness. Had a visit on the first extension and one again last year where the interview was quite uncomfortable with questions about where my money came from but I will say I have never been asked for money during a visit. Also, the immigration office visit yesterday was efficient, in and out in about an hour and a half.

  9. the cherry on top is that the hire car was a piece of junk and impossible to drive at night because the window foil tints were so dark you couldn't see if the headlights were on ............

you are now going to ask why we accepted this hire car, we didn't have a choice as there had been so many accidents that Ford couldn't give us a Ford hire car, I want to scream but no one can hear you scream in Thailand!!!

  10. My wife going through an accident with an IRPC pickup driver slamming into 3 cars behind her which totalled the back end of our fiesta the best advice I can give is make sure if you get a hire car that the people at fault pay for it. IRPC and our insurance company didn't cough up for the hire car so we lost more than 50,000 baht. I will say the Ford dealership did a fantastic repair and we are very grateful for the help  but f u c k insurance in Thailand, IRPC one of the biggest Thai companies didn't pay our  hire car bill. <deleted> irpc

  11. buy an uninterruptible power supply (ups) which has 200V + 110V outputs, don't trust cheap Chinese transformers as you might get a shock. 200 watts you could run off a 12v car invertor if you needed to as the one I have (low powered) is rated at 250W continuous. Is it a 50 or 60 Hz machine as I just checked and Japan uses both frequencies in different parts of the country. if it's 60hz (without any electronics) it will run slightly slower and a higher temperature but some ups here you can select output frequency as it doesn't matter what the mains frequency is because an invertor creates ac from dc so it could be either frequency.

just got back from there, it was packed today

I went there today and it was packed but for family extensions (ie marriage) it was quiet and we were out within 1.5 hours after queuing but my wife had picked their brains 2 weeks before going there as a witness and we presented our paperwork (in duplicate) in the correct order.

So there's no register or record of how many guns someone buys, and no question asked about why anyone would want to have five? And that doesn't only apply to Thailand, of course. Guns have one purpose and one purpose only - to maim or kill. Why would anyone need five? Why would anyone need even one?

Please remember Bill Clinton when president tried to introduce a law to only allow people to buy 1 hand gun a month, NRA won.

IMHO this is all a graphic illustration of the perils of mixing visas up with extensions of stay (which, as @ubonjoe has, yet again, recently reminded us on this thread, are completely separate animals). In this particular instance @sandrabbit has, I feel, muddied the waters unnecessarily through an apparently dogged determination on his part to refer to both in the same breath!

I did this because people keep referring to visa's and that's why I did visa/extension and it it doesn't take much to realise what I meant but I did state it was only approval to apply which looks like it's going through as he had the imm home visit as my wife went round to their house as witness again. And the reason I didn't mention him going out of the country was because he didn't need to, Ubon Joe didn't correct me so he obviously understood what I was trying to convey ...........
