In my days as a tourist I never went without a drink if I wanted one. Does that make me smarter than your perception of the average tourist? Please don’t construe these comments as support for these ridiculous blanket bans on alcohol sales. They are not, in a grown up world grown ups should have the right to decide whether to imbibe or not - whether on religious grounds or any other. In any event tourist areas should be exempt….not just (some) hotels.

What happens (legally) in the U.K. is very similar to what happens in Thailand. Taking anything to the bank now is pointless! Take it to two different bank staff you will likely get two different answers. Once you are dead is when what the bank says matters. I applaud the preparations you are making; we all want to see our loved one’s taken care of, and our wishes carried out. The comments you are getting are intended to help you understand what is likely to happen ‘on the ground’. In Thailand that can vary from place to place but it is most likely that your missus will need to obtain probate from the court before being able to access your funds. Many expats operate on a practical level and ensure their widows have access to an ATM card and PIN number……or internet banking access. Not entirely legal but it saves court fees.

To what/where?

You really can’t tell the difference?

Rubbish! I can’t think of any Thai town that resembles anywhere I have been in the west.

Happy endings in cricket have invariably involved Ben Stokes! ????

That seems less likely to be the case these days (Blackjack may confirm or not) and is down to each individual bank. Just bowling up with the Will and death certificate is unlikely to cut it. As in the West, a Will needs to be ‘proved’ to become effective - that can only be achieved in a local court.

Exactly. In the case in question the wife/beneficiary would no doubt be happy to deal with any issues because “The translation was understood by my Mrs and the local govt Anfur office and stamped accordingly.”
-
That is good news ????. It wouldn’t be your problem anyway………if your missus was happy with what she heard/read then she would have to deal with any issues after your demise ????

The only purpose of the English wording is to facilitate production of the Will in Thai. Amphora Wills are only accepted in Thai. If you are not fluent in Thai then you need to be certain that the Thai version accurately reflects your wishes. Like me, I suspect that you will have no idea what the Thai version says.

Where can I get an English translation of a Thai will form?
hotandsticky replied to MrMuddle's topic in Chiang Mai
Disagree. The 2 Wills are usually unrelated with totally different beneficiaries. You have no idea of the OP's tax position so your advice is ill placed. I seriously doubt that there will be ANY tax implications in either location. -

The amphur Will can only be in Thai. Any English version is simply for you to guide the translator. You will have no idea what the final version says so it might be sensible to get your wife to read it to you. -

So, basically, little has changed. The pyramid exists - weaker at the top and less solid in parts - but don't for a moment think that it has disappeared. -
