1. Standard Chartered was an option in the past too, if you had accounts locally and abroad, but they closed the CNX office last year. Would have to go to Bangkok and do inter-regional transfer to Chiang Mai which depending on the bank may cost extra.

Can't comment on the BKK Bank office in US or UK, the one in Singapore is dysfunctional for personal money transfers.

  2. They have it in their computer system, the slip is just there to tell you the date and for memories of the old times. Do it per mail, write on the paper that you lost the old slip and include your phone number. If they don't reply you can still go at the due date to the airport office and inquire (desk in the waiting area). If they updated the notification date in the computer (which is high likely) they will simply print a new slip for you on the spot.

Not the slip is the requirement but the notification itself. So I don't see any problem.

  3. Thanks for the info @Bob. This looks like a great option if need arises, also easy (and fast) to access for us "Southerners". It belongs to CMU, so that should explain the affordable price level.

Let's hope it will not get run over by the not-so-in-need and consequently suffers the same demise as the health insurance for foreigners 2 years ago.

  4. No, I mean the letter you have to get from the bank for immigration, stating you have the amount of money on the account the day before you apply for the extension and includes the time for how long you have the bank account. I've had it happen in BKK that a particular SCB branch had no idea what I needed from them, so had to show them an example of the text needed.

Immigration may also require a bank certified statement of transactions/balances for the last 3 months. Copy of bankbook was not enough last year as there were some accumulated transactions when you don't update the book for a while (I think they put all together in one printed line after 3 months).

  5. They just added a funny tourist transport to Ban Tawai and that to the new "outlet" at Kad Farang.

    Details, please.

    thanks, ~o:37;

The Baan Tawai Minivan is called BTTS, you see them regularly on Hang Dong Road. Don't really know from exactly where to where. Some info on the bottom of this site: http://www.ban-tawai.com/news.php

For the Kad Farang shuttle I don't know, probably from some hotels with potential victims for the outlet center :)...

  6. If you give them a copy, draw 2 Parallel lines diagonally across the document copy and write something like "Only for purposes of Thai Immigration" (or whatever is appropriate) in between the lines.

That is quite standard in Thailand when you need to give copies of important documents to all and sundry.

Exactly, the locals do this all the time for all kind of copies.

Nobody will be able to take over your land based on a chanod copy. But TiT, everything is possible :)

  7. I'm just back from Central Airport and I tried to figure out the terms and conditions for the vCare Savings accident insurance. Pretty disappointing and incompetent. I have to put my recommendation for UOB on hold unless I eventually get some useful information.

They do not know anything about it. The only thing certain is that a beneficiary will get paid in case of death. That they only know, because one has to name this beneficiary. That's however not what an accident insurance should cover.

I pointed the lady to their own website and she was obviously surprised what was written there, new for her. They do not have any T&Cs but instead of saying so, she tried to sell me another vCare debit card. <deleted>?! After talking to the boss they could at least figure out that the insurance provider is Thaivivat. I will try to get better information through the UOB hotline.

Wife says there are many cases launched withe the customer protection agency where banks sell insurances but do not honor them. So the only recommendation for now is stay away from banks and get a real insurance, if you need one.

  8. It looks like they might pay someone if you are killed or permanently disabled but what about medical expenses if you aren't?

It means these conditions are included, not just treatment of the actual accident. UOB vCare comes with worldwide coverage. But I'm not their agent, just took what was on the table.

We had this discussion elsewhere, I had several bad encounters with BKK Bank and wont touch them with a stick again. Others here do all and everything with them and don't even dare to look what others offer. I call that fanboys smile.png

Nancy mentioned 200k limit for her accident insurance, someone else 600k. That certainly wont help if you lose your leg. A health insurance with 1mTHB lifetime coverage wont help you much either.

  9. Huge amount of BKK Bank fanboys and girls here. 200kTHB or even 600k is the same self betrayal as a health insurance with 1mTHB coverage. In a real situation you will be on your own.

Again, I mentioned that already, check out a UOB vCare savings account. Includes a free accident insurance with a coverage of 10x the balance up to a max of 10mTHB. If you park the 800k for your extension there you would have accidents insured with 8mTHB. For free. Other banks may have similar offers with high coverage.

  10. A pet shop in Thailand?? I have seen places selling dogs, rabbits, fish etc, but not an actual pet shop like in the UK.

Lots of them, but I did not mean the ones that sell the little monsters alive, rather pet supply shops, some local chains even. There is one at Canal Rd besides the 7/11 if you go south after the Mae Hia Rimping, another one on Hang Dong Rd, nearby the post office. Many more.

Be nice to the dogs, they are friendly creatures.

  11. That's a pity. If the card no more tells your status as being PR, what good in having it anymore?

It's good for all of us none-PRs that have the card. We can now pretend we are :D.

Got one last month in BKK. So far had no chance to test it in a 500B tourist trap. That may be the only purpose for this card, but haven't seen any reports about Thai price when presenting the card as a no longer accepted drivers license in the past.

  12. <deleted> My insurer providers up to 60 Million THB for cancer; it's specifically included in the terms.

Then it's probably not a local insurance. For a reasonable yearly fee of let's say 50k THB (that's a usual amount in TH) you wont find anything that offers more than 1mTHB coverage and that is for everything, not only possible cancer.

I could certainly throw truckloads of money on the guys like CIGNA, certainly first class and they cover things you don''t even know exist. But that money can be used better in many ways.

As with everything, it's up to you. If you think you need it, go for it. Especially if you come from welfare states in Europe where they program you for your whole life with the things you need.

  13. Lol. When you are run over by a car or a motorcycle - how you perceive yourself is irrelevant. Same for getting cancer. If you make your health insurance decisions based on "perception of health" you are just fooling yourself and by extension the people of Thailand who will be getting some of the bill for your poor decisions.

For an accident you have an accident insurance. They come with high coverage such as 10mTHB and often for free with a bank account or credit card (e.g. UOB vCare with accident insurance of 10x the balance or max. 10mTHB).

If you get cancer, well shit happens. Health insurance will give you the max. coverage of 1mTHB or less and then you are on your own. I don't need an insurance for that too feed hungry agents and build glass palaces in Bangkok (AIA at Ratchada is a nice recent example).

  14. Look into some businesses going out of themselves, they are all over. If you have local contacts ask them, they may know someone who knows who knows. That's how many things work here.

People <deleted> themselves up all the time and internet cafes or other pseudo office enterprises seldom last longer than 6 months. Get their stuff.

Hope you will make it for a bit longer. Let me know when you have really nice chairs for sale....LOL
