  1. my personal observation...

in mbk the phone area (near tokyo) 4th floor...the shops make a bargain wid u then go around to other shops to get a good margin and then coma back n tell u that old price is not valid and re-negotiate a couple of k's higher...all shops do that...

  2. tx a ton madsere.

i have dtac unlimited gprs....now will visit dtac site to sign up....then gotta move into starbucks...;-) ... anyways whats the speed you guys get in starbucks....i believe 11 mbps would be the connection between you and the accesspoint not the internet....

anyone run any speed test while on the starbucks hotspot?

  3. ...

even anything to connect the usb hard disk to the network as a network disk would be gr8(i dunno if its possible) the same like how a print server connect a usb printer to the network...

There are SOHO storage servers that resemble a "broadband" router with one IDE disk and/or a USB2 port in them to act as a little fileserver. However, outside their niche "storage for dummies" market, they are not very cost effective. For the $200-500 they seem to cost, you could build up a capable, headless PC server and have the ability to add multiple large drives over time. Linux can make a cheap storage server and is probably what is running in the SOHOstorage appliances anyway.

    which distribution?

will any ftp server sufice for storage?

i would like a folder on the server to be mapped as a drive in my system....is it possible?

  4. UBC via cable??

is that possible? or u r talkin abt where appartment managers share UBC illegally through their cheap equipment?

i used to use UBC a few days ago../

i used one dish to access 2 receivers, one samsung 29" flatscreen and a sony 21" flatscreen, both has really good images without any distortion...

the main problem with the normal free to air programs in bangkok is the cable clutter.

bangkok is covered with loads of electric and telephone cables all over the city...normally on any other big city it would be underground, but in bangkok its up on poles and creats an electromagnetic field which causes interference.,....

another thing is thai ppl dont complain....

    "tv is not clear....doesnt matter"

  5. >> dust, heat, moisture???

Unlikely.. the error shown was an application error, meanign that the ATM-program crashed, not the computer itself or the OS.  Dust, heat or moisture issues would lead to a total lock-up or sponteneous reset.

    pls allow me to disagree.

example : some connection on the network controller gets rusted, the the "application" gets a hard time tryin to understand the network data...and eventually crashes???

memory errors due to loose connection caused by envoirnmental factors could cause application errors.

the fact that srisatch mentioned BTS station made me come up with that...

in college we had a microprocessor lab where we coded on 8085 processor kits...

if u apply some force on the main processor(some connections gettin loose), the display(6 digit 7 segment display) would show strange characters randomly(application error??)..and in the whole process our programs were still intact in the memory...which is deleted if the device resets.

no relation with those antique systems and the hitech systems of today but i still say dust moisture and heat cant be ruled out as driving forces behind aplication error...

  6. I couldn't make out who manufactured the ATM. I think that those made or OEM'd by IBM still use OS/2.....

i could normally find the IBM logo on the older machines....

normally on the newer more graphical machines theres no IBM logo...

i guess the older ones were more stable n reliable...

not much diference in user interface or anything.

    does the pretymuch same stuff...

dunno why they wanna put M$ stuff on ATMs?

  7. i always thought ATMs ran on embeded software....

the link shows it runing windoze NT...lots of things could go wrong...

even the user inputs r testable and limited, there r loads of things that could mess up...hardware problems....loose cables....network error could confuse the system....

these days they have some ATM machines show video advertisements n stuff...loads to go wrong now....

i always wondered how secure is their networks??? some atm boxes (eg the one outside macdonalands at hatyai the back side inside mcdonalds) have their modem and cables in the open for anyone to mess around with...

maybe this is LOS and security isint a concern.,..

  8. ive got a 80 gig for 5,500 very nice to cary around and its already full.

120 gig would be too unportable, would love to have some storage connected so i can dump files into it on the fly...im most on travel and not comfortable with the idea of carying around a 2 kilo extra...

    home > 3 notebook users

    office > 2 notebook + 2 desktops

    all crying for diskspace.

even anything to connect the usb hard disk to the network as a network disk would be gr8(i dunno if its possible) the same like how a print server connect a usb printer to the network...

  9. I've seen many people sitting around in Starbucks doing stuff online from their laptop. I have a powerbook G4 (Mac) and it includes a chip for wireless access etc. (I hook into my ISP from all over the house all the time) but, my tiny brain is having trouble understanding what I need to do to get online in cafe's etc. I've noticed surftime cards available for sale in Starbucks, but I don't have a card slot on the machine and don't have a clue how I get to hook into their ISP, and also whether it's cheaper to just sit in the internet cafe at 1 baht/min. anyway?

    Could someone please enlighten me?

    Thanks.  :o

yes most starbucks in thailand have a wireless hotspot where customers can use the internet wireless-ly. since your notebook does have a wireless chip then its probably compatible (im lost when it comes to macs).

i havent used the internet in starbucks but here is how most hot spots work....

u buy a prepaid card. this card(probably the surftime card u mentioned) has a login name and a password...generally a scratch card.

u power up yr notebook, turn on the wireless....log on to their SSID normally mentioned on the card or u could ask the staff for assistance. notmally all hot spots have a some sort fo instructions available...

then u try open any webpage(or some url on the card) on your browser, u will be redirected to some sort of login page. there u enter the login name and password on the card and ur in....

use the net ad u would do in your home....

    i dunno the speed u would get in a cafe...neway 1 baht/min is expensive.....at home 1 mbps adsl costs me 990/month....thats unlimited...

so if u surf the net 1 hour a day in the cafe then thats gonna cost u 1*60*30 = 1,800 baht/month....

  10. personally i'd host it in the states

i get the message loud and clear not to host website n mail using a thai ISP...especially if its a home package....

now ne solution for some storage at home or office? other than burnin on DVDs or something?

now that i dont need to host files or anything any cheap file server available in bangkok?

  11. yep ip address is correct, i have had loads of browser problems, and even more wth thai isp's, but not this time, have you a host file for IE?

This is strange.... even goin to http://67.15.7.155/ gives me the same test page...

in th afternoon i could open http://webscorpion (dot*) com/ where half the images werent being able to download and all the links gave me 403 error...now even http://webscorpion (dot*) com/ gives me the test page.

ive got a host file but not set it up or done anything. to it...

    * PS: as per george, this site gets -ve ranking on multiple links to a domain on the same page....

  12. Nor would I ... but ... Red Hat test page? Dead links? I think you might have a problem with your browser or internet access ...

Both links go to the same page when I try - and I don't see either Red Hat test page nor a single dead link. Where did you see that?

now both those links give me the following :-

    ws.jpg

this is the only site showing up like this. all others show up correctly.

pls confirm that the IP of the site is 67.15.7.155 ....if not then its a problem with my isp...(e-go on 1222)

PS: the page opened correctly on my pda (DTAC GPRS)

seems like phuketsiam has never had any ISP or browser problems so can u help me out?

  13. Most hosts allow you to host multiple domains. I can host unlimited domains for my clients on a single IP.

Also my nameservers (xxx.mydomain.com) are on the same IP as the hosting provider.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i doubt if hostingbangkok.com offers any resellers account.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They do (if you had read their page carefully). They can sell 'unlimited space' and 'unlimited bandwidth' through either overselling (you count on the fact that your other clients don't use their whole allotment) or you limit it by 'acceptable use' in your terms and conditions.

Also they have high setup fees ... not really the norm today. If you're not satisfied you've already paid at least THB 1,000 (2.5 times the hosting fee).

To start you have to shell out at least THB 2,200 ..... (plus you're domain registration).

now upon revisiting the site, i did find the reellers link....they have data transfer limitations and webspace limitations for resellers.....

they offer virtual servers i guess...

i did see an unlimited package with unlimted webspace and bandwidth....but not sure if one could create sub accounts or host multiple domains....

i dont think any webhost is foolish enough to offer unlimited webspace n bandwidth and that too make it a resellers account....

  14. ok guys...thanks a lot for your replies....

one reason i wanted the server is i could reduce the load of files on my notebook on some networked device which can be accessed easily...specially when i am in the same lan...

maybe for now i wait for ADSL to get more competative and higher uplink bandwidth is availabe for lower costs...

anybody know of a good server co-locator at singapore? thailands connection to singapore seems quite strong and the fact that ppl abroad who may need to access the server all stay in SE asian countries who all have direct connection to s'pores stix backbone......

co-location in bangkok is too expensive....

dedicated servers starting from 11,000 for a celeron box...

i like firefoxes idea where i keep the larger files on a home host....even is one or 2 concurent users want that file 512 kbps should be enough...

  15. mayb a little off topic but i always wondered whats the time to access the gateway when using these satelite based connections.

you can ping the gateway to check the response time.

does it get slower on rainy/cloudy days?

    how much do they charge?

ok enuff now...im gonna mail them....

  16. hello livinlos,

thanks a lot for the clarifications....it was an eyeopener...

now will definately not use SMTP on dynamic IPs...static IP is the answer then...

maybe for now i wait for sometime before hosting website and mail on my own server,...

    i still need the following.

    - file server

    - fax 2 mail solution

ill be having a computer spare lying around....p4, some sheap $h1t mother board, 10 GB hard disk, CD rom drive(doesnt work), 10/100 network card...just a question for linux guys, how can i turn it into fax to mail and file server?

  17. hello,

it depends on host to host what they offer.

it is possible for a web host to allow multiple domains per account, but then if they allow one domain per account then ppl who need 2 sites like you would have to get 2 accounts which means more revenue for them.

i need to host 4 sites...so i got myself a reseller account where certain limitations are made to the resources and i can create as many accounts within them.

i doubt if hostingbangkok.com offers any resellers account.

i smell something fishy abt them...

for 2500/month they give unlimited webspace and bandwidth???

they have only a total of 56GB diskspace..(minus system files) then how can they offer unlimited web space?..

gotta get more info of them,,...maybe good for storing files.,...

there r much better offers around....

since i have a reseller account from www.lypha.com, i can give u a small package...

you can check other posts on webhosting here for more links...
