  1. In Mandalay (Myanmar), where the street lighting doesn't work most of the time, the local BBQ restaurant staff would all help me to cross the busy road after dark, lest they lose a good customer! I hope they are all OK after the earthquake!
  2. Thailand is 'open' for Russians, and clearly many Russians have voted with their feet to relocate to a warmer and safer country. In my condo building in Jomtien, most tenants are Russians. Most are OK, some are tw*ts, just like any other nationality.
  3. Starlink is not authorised in Thailand, but that doesn't mean that it won't technically work! In Myanmar, the various pdf fighters use Starlink Mini, even though it's not authorised in Myanmar. They buy the kit with a subscription for Mobile Roam legally in the PI, then take it into Myanmar. If I manage to return to Myanmar, I plan to do the same - the antenna is small enough to easily fit into a backpack.
  4. Give it a rest Bob - you're getting tedious...
  5. Why was he allowed to take his mobile phone into GCHQ? That beggars belief...... (I never worked at GCHQ, but I signed the Official Secrets Act and worked on military equipment design. We were frisk-searched before and after we entered/exited the area where we worked...
  6. Excellent news! Then we are both happy....
  7. Trapped on the 4th floor? What 4th floor? It's all one big pile of rubble.....
  8. Now she is one foreigner that I definitely don't want to meet! 🙂
  9. DON'T go to Chiang Mai!! (I am currently relaxing in CM)
  10. Since the UK is effectively a Muslim country now, I suspect it was Eid that delayed the transfer.
  11. You missed out what is apparently a very common reason to visit this forum: trolling....
  12. Unlike many European countries, Thailand is not interested in welcoming dead-beat foreigners, (unless they are rich, dead-beat foreigners). The employment laws of Thailand protect Thai people from foreigners who want to 'muscle in' on their low-paid, basic jobs. Do not even think of working in these types of jobs because immigration will rapidly catch up with you!! However, it's always good to be optimistic/glass half-full 🙂 You don't have a degree. But what is your nationality/native language? If it is not English (and I'm guessing that you are maybe Italian - apologies if I'm wrong), then you may be able to earn a reasonable income teaching your native language 'online' through a website such as Italki. That website lists 2 kinds of teachers >> Professional teachers with degrees and relevant teaching experience, and Community teachers, who don't have degrees, and therefore charge lessons at a lower rate. If you want to teach English online, I'd say no chance!! (too many people doing that already). But if your native language is not English, then you stand a chance of getting paying students, no matter how obscure your native language is! The legality of teaching online in Thailand is a bit of a grey area, but if you only teach non-Thais, then you should have no problems. I'd guess that a Community teacher of say Spanish or Italian on iTalki would earn about $10 USD (tax-free) per hour. I used to teach Science-in-English via Italki, and I was inundated with students (because of my Science knowledge). I recently stopped teaching via iTalki after having earned $100,000 USD (that took a few years!) Check out the Italki website. I think it's the most realistic option for you.
  13. Since I've been teaching in Myanmar for many years, I already had some equipment: - hand-cranked/solar-powered torch - solar radio receiver - 12 volt to 220 volt inverter (to run my laptop from car battery) - solar panel controller - 12v battery charger - LED rechargeable lights I always carried these in a small bag - buy the car battery and solar panel locally. Plus I always carry an emergency medical kit - clean syringe/needles, antibiotics, other important medicines. All of the above were used regularly by me in Myanmar prior to the earthquake, because the infrastructure was so bad.... When the military government allowed me to operate as XZ2A (which they did from time to time), I used my short-wave ham radio transceiver to send/receive emails using the Winlink (winlink.org) short-wave emergency network. That's slow but works OK for text emails. I already knew how to (practically) build simple water distilleries using plastic bottles, so that I could obtain clean drinking water. I'm in Chiang Mai right now, and there is little that I can do to help in Myanmar (Mandalay airport is closed etc). I do know that some foreign teachers are missing, presumed dead in the collapsed Sky Condo building 😞
  14. IMHO, a lot of what he says is true. But the manner in which he encourages young teen boys to implement his beliefs is downright dangerous, and exploits their naivety. You can be a strong and confident young man without 'knocking' or controlling women...
  15. Luckily I was in Chiang Mai when this earthquake hit Mandalay - I'm trying to get news from my school...
  16. Video on FB from a fellow teacher from my old school in Mandalay: https://www.facebook.com/1197424435/videos/pcb.10231223841758170/1395570298544130
  17. I've sent an email to my old school in Mandalay to see if everyone is OK No reply yet...
  18. Edited post since location now mentioned.
  19. Only 10km depth. That's not good. I hope everyone is OK in Mandalay...
  20. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=2.63579,-272.76855&extent=26.07652,-226.80176 now reports a magnitude of 7.7! very close to Mandalay (where I was teaching until only 2 months ago) Update: Aftershocks... To put this into context, the 2016 earthquake that damaged many of the historic temples in old Bagan was 6.8 on the Richter scale...
  21. I'm in CM right now also - earth tremor not showing up yet on: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=2.63579,-272.76855&extent=26.07652,-226.80176
  22. GG, surely a man well-travelled like yourself is aware of the reputation of those monkeys, (in fact any monkeys in any city - they thrive on stealing from humans and attacking those who fight back). Are you up-to-date with your rabies shots?
