  1. I am obliged to carry a smartphone for business but I use about 10% of its capability because I don't do texts and I prefer to manage my mail and browsing on a big screen desk top.

I turn it off as soon as I get home - the logic being that I am no longer mobile, and I have a home phone if people want to contact me.

This also forces people to think about calling and remember things like time zones - if they know they are phoning a home they think twice about the time and the number of middle of the night calls from europe or the US decreases dramatically.

In SE Asia these smartphones are more about fashion than communications.

  2. Money, money, money is what it is really all about and they think that the world hasn't worked it out yet.

Very sorry for the civilians on both sides who are having to suffer for the greed of those who are probably already rich but want to get richer.

One thing is for sure, whatever the ruling, the local people , whether Thai or Cambodian won't see many of the tourist dollars

  3. Good Luck - You have made the right start .

I was married to a violent alcoholic lady for 10 years - she solved the problem by dying of alcohol fuelled hepatitis and a complete renal failure after 3 weeks in an alcoholic coma.

If that does not motivate you to stop , it should - stay strong and live.

  4. I wouldn't have bought a home for someone else (outright).

My mrs has a 25 year home loan, if we part not my problem.

The first rule for people who only have savings, don't spend the savings on something foolish.

(Like a house and business for someone else)

It can't happen to everyone, only someone fairly foolish.

His options, go home or go Pattaya balcony.

    What a smug self-satisfied <deleted> you must be .

  5. He needs to get his head around the prospect of returning to his home country.

Thailand is no place to be broke for sure........there is no sympathy here and no infrastructure in place to cater for poor people except family .

It is a sad story for sure but the plain fact is he has to call it quits and get on a plane , and the sooner the better.

    Very sorry for the guy....

  6. English is only the international language of diplomacy, banking, computing, medicine, business, science, technology, research, why should Thai be bothered learning it? Everyone knows Thai more important, lakorn always in Thai and so are the menu's.

Also Air traffic control, Marine traffic control, port operations , Radio Communication and together with a few others an official language of the United Nations.

  7. Unfortunately , as in the rest of the world, the culture of blame will stop any constructive measures being put in place to prevent a repeat.

If the Captain has his licence revoked and is fined or imprisoned, everyone will think that justice has been done when in fact the correct justice would be for the Marine Department to be forced out of it's sloth and become proactive in enforcing safety regulations.

This of course will not happen.
