  1. Beef prices are very expensive in Thailand now. You can buy chicken or pork for less than 100 baht a kilo, but beef starts at 300 baht a kilo. A good sized cow (female/breeder) is easily worth 25,000 to 35,000 baht. So a Thai with 5 or 6 cows may have a value of 150,000 - 200,000 baht, not a shabby amount of cash for a villager.

Though most cows are of the Brahman breed in Thailand, the govt. has an ongoing program to improve the heard. We have six cows and have been cross breeding Black Angus with Brahman through insemination with the government vet.

6 years ago, I had a GF, who had 30 head of cattle. I spent time at her parent's home on five acres, plus they owned an adjacent property with a house and 3 acres. It was all grassland, and they did not grow anything on it, not even a vegetable garden, so the cows kept the fields mowed. The GF had been married off to a rich Thai man when she was a 17 yr old virgin, and the family received a very large sin sot for her, since, at the age of 17, her looks rivaled those of any international model. She was quite unusual, a beautiful girl, but also, though both her parents were clearly Thai, and her sister and brother looked like typical Isaan Thais, she looked almost more Mediterranean than Thai, and was sometmies mistaken for a farang.

From a very early age, her beauty was recognized, and her mom, anticipating the value of her future sin sot, spoiled her rotten. Consequently, she had an extremely high opinion of herself. She was also highly intelligent, and thought she knew better than anyone else, bossed people around(especially her parents and siblings), and didn't understand why she could not always have her way.

For her honeymoon, her Thai husband took her on a long tour of Europe. But the romance didn't last. After one year, he could not bear her attitude anymore. So, when she gave birth to a child, he came and took the boy from the hospital immediately, and that was the last she ever saw of him or the child, she was delivered divorce papers the next day.

What's that got to do with cows, you may be asking yourself. Well, with the sin sot, she bought 25 cattle, and 30 rai of sugar cane (an Udon Thani girl). Her brother, who was a bit of a layabout, took care of the cattle for her, as it was the least he could do for her, since he was always sponging money from her, and she paid his 100K sin sot, when he had to marry the 15 yr old he knocked up (he was 25 at the time, one year older than her).

The herd had grown to 30 at the time I visited with her parents in Udon Thani. Of course, I wondered why she had bought the herd of cattle. Why not more sugar cane land? She didn't offer any explanation, but after some time observing her behavior, I reached the following conclusion. To my way of thinking, having a herd of cattle was like having a big bank account. But better. The sugar cane paid off l at harvest time, but cash doesn't last, as she was constantly being hit up for money by her parents, siblings, aunts, and cousins. Not to mention the wat at the end of her road, where she was a steady contributor, as was her mother. also.

Consequently, the cash came and went, then they would be broke again until next harvest. Same with her father, who also had 30 rai of sugar cane. But you can't borrow cattle, and you can't hit someone up for a little piece of it, every time they need to fill their rice bowl. She spoke with her mom every day on the phone for an hour or more. By the end of it, it always sounded like an argument to me. Her mom was constantly badgering her for money, and she was constantly berating her mom for one thing or another, and if there was nothing elso to badger her about, it always came back to the forced marriage, and her lost child, which she blamed her mom for, and often threw that in her face.

But these being Isaan folk, all the arguing in the world did not separate them, they were back at it again the next day, as in spite of it all, the bond between them was extremely strong. And my GF, like so many other Isaan girls, felt it to her bones, that she must take care of family. As much as she complained about it, that did not lessen her sense of duty one whit.

Consequently, periodically, when cash was scarce, and the weight of her mother's cries of poverty accumulated to a degree, where she could no longer bear it, she would allow her mom to sell a cow. She was getting about 20K Baht at the time for one cow.

Only her mom could ever get her to sell a cow. She paid no attention to her dad, never spoke to him on the phone, and when we were visiting the family home, I never heard her speak to him, except to yell out commands to him, to do this, that, or the other thing for her. Which he quite calmly ignored, until a certain time had passed, enough to show her he could not be treated like a servant, but then quietly, after she had finally given up yelling at him, he would do as she asked, smiling all the while, as though this was all a very polite, civil, and normal way of going about things.

So having the cows was a storehouse of value, and better than a bank, because it had nt ATM, so nobody could prevail upon her for a handout or loan. Except mom, of course, and mom and to withstand quite an ear-beating over many weeks of pleading to get her to sell a cow. The proof of that was that in six years, her herd had grown from 25 to 30 head.

So, having cows is not just a symbol of wealth and status. It is actual wealth, better than money in the bank.

This story almost put tears in my eyes sounds like a screenplay for one of those Thai soap ophra's.The cowfather part one would be a title i think.

I find it very strange that some of my fellow country men can move to places like the uk,oz and the us and become  very succesfull in life.luckely most people like me don't  live in councel estates in peckham or south central Los Angeles and are very pleased with our lives in the west even Thais  ,if you where second or third rate in youre home country then Thailand must be Paradise to said people.

Concerning the little Paradise youre so called friend built there is i nice little article on a website wich cant be linked or mentioned here concerning buying luxery villa's on a very wel known eiland resort by a few loaded europeans with so called renewable leases witch they signed years ago and know they are out of their villa's because the leases where not renewable.

Every time such topics arise on tv you will Always see people only posting the positive side because they have vested interests in Thailand and nothing else.Lately since the junta those property experts have winded down on tv because they maybe getting in to trouble in the near future with their dodgy property deals specially now amlo and dsi want to have a look at said money being brought in to Thailand by foreigners to buy property with no questions asked ,i bet a few people in the property bussiness in Thailand are about to soil their pants in the near future.

    Einstien a-go-go.

You come across as Mitz & Schnitz, used to bumbling about in your fingerless gloves.

Ugh - I've seen some Russian films, and I'm not saying you're Russian, but you do belong with them.

"udzg-itdst-gutzt - your mother died of your birth, your father died of war - live up "tyo" your namibitchkyeikie - you're a hero when <deleted>**d"

    Any thoughts?

Are you on some kind of medication? And if so Thailands healtcare system doesn't score very well concerning the treatment of mental patients.

If a Thai company built a Toyota, Isuzu, Ford, Mitsubishi, BMW, Honda, Mazda......... would you take a ride in one of these???

Sent from my GT-N7100 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Of course i would any body can build cars on an assembly line not rocket science ,but design and quality control are done under close watch or supervision by people from the head office all said companys are only there for cheap labour not their technical skills.
The question was would you have faith in a Thai company that built a roller coaster - my point is of course I would, after all Thai companies are quite capable of building all of the above vehicles, building the internals of my smart phone, performing corrective eye surgery, drilling for, refining and producing oil products. I am quite sure the OP did not mean Somchai and Sombat - AKA farmers with hammers being let loose to construct some type of redneck fairground construction willy nilly. Or maybe it was just a veiled attack on Thais and Thai companies.......

Again as in your second post al things are done under supervision by people from the head office or by people Thais who studied abroad,if such a construction would be designed and built by a Thai company it would be done by sombat and somchai with hammers.

Why is it if somebody has an opinion they are slagging of Thais?

Something as simple as hooking up an atm machine got a little girl in coma and a condo collapsed a few days ago because their so called engineer doesn't understand the simple basic rules of structural engineering but instead applied thainess resulting in many deaths and i can give you more examples if you want but the list would be endless.

  5. Sex education. It's an education thing. Parents don't talk about it, teachers don't teach it. It is taboo.

Apparently a lot of foreign punters visiting naughty bars have the same problem ,Always asking where and how to get viagra but to cheap to buy a family pack of durex.

Envy might kick in if you owned a condo in Monte Carlo or an 18th century farmhouse in Provence or a vineyard in Tuscanny.

Envy would definitely kick in if you enjoyed blissful retirement in a Caribbean villa.

So you envy people who live in these places and have these things?  I certainly don't.

Yes but property in said places is yours when you buy it and a good investement i have seen hundred year old farm houses in France that look better then some ten year old houses /villa's in Thailand .

And there is a nice thing called zone planning in said places,a fellow countryman of mine plonked six million baht in to a house somewhere outside Korat and two years later a fertilizer factory was build down the road from his place i can tell you the smell was very nasty day in day out wich means his place is now worthless.

I certainly think that SOME people have settled for less.

In my view, many have been drawn here by the women. Not necessarily to run around availing themselves of everything that's up for it but for the fact they can get a very attractive woman here without having the kind of personality and/or income they would need to land a woman on the same scale back home.

While their friends back home might "confess" to being "envious", in reality, what they feel is more akin to PITY

    1. Is it envy or pity they feel when they meet the wife/GF he's thrown his lot in with who can barely string a sentence together in English?
    2. Is it envy or pity they feel when they realise that he can barely string a sentence together in Thai?
    3. Is it envy or pity they feel when they hear about the immigration hoops he has to jump through to stay in Thailand?

    4. Is it envy or pity they feel when they hear that the business, the house, the car and the motorbike he claims to own is actually held in his wife/GF's name?

5.Is it envy or pity they feel when his health acts up and he's got no insurance to pay for major treatment and he has to beg steal or borrow to cover the expenses?

There's no doubt that there are guys who've carved out truly enviable lives here but they're the ones who've dodged the marry-a-local bullet and used the lower cost of living to save/invest more of what they earn.

total crap their speaks a bitter man IMO my thai wife and kids have all in their names and have had for over 15 years Im not stupid but many think I am. However once i was sure my Thai wife was honest faithful and trustworthy I decided to start putting everything in her name and then when children came in theirs. That also applied to our (hers now) UK and USA assets. Sure their a lot of very sad stories by people who let their dicks rule their heads but theirs also a lot of very happy long term successful marriages here and age has little to do with it. Im over 80 and my wife is 40 years younger and while we've had ups and downs their is no doubt in my mind that like my first wife if we ever parted she would make sure i was ok.

I feel sorry for people like you who never trust and always think everyone is bad normally just because they stupidly fell for a bad one who was after all only with them for money and so become totally bitter and twisted all their lives. Ive seen lots of them over 30 years and they probably liker you are all IMO sad sad beings.

I decided to put all here and in UK USA in my wife and thai children's names simply because it was easier for them when i go but then i did not really expect to last this long.

I also know a lot of forang scared @#$#@ in case their wives take what they have and try all sorts of things to protect against that such as buying in company name and rest. Thats sad as well since i could never ever be with someone i could not trust 100% on at least financially. I was bitten done twice before  met my wife but not by huge amounts and it was worth it to see if they were honest or just gold diggers. Its simple really just first give small house and car and then wait a while the wrong ones will soon get bored and leave and thats a cheap price to pay (less than 5k gbp in my case twice but that was 30 year + ago).

Then theirs those who try to give as little as they can and surprise surprise the wife feels he does not trust me very well ill take what i can. After all nearly all women need some financial security which does not mean they are gold diggers.

Anyway good luck to you with your bitter twisted views which will repay you greatly I'm sure. Better to die happy with someone who really cares for you than with huge millions.

I also know many like you who boast about how many girls they have had and how great it is yet when drunk admit they would swap all that for one who they could love and who loved them. But they will never find that one since they are so afraid ofd being done again.

My now ex Thai wife owns a house in Thailand and just bought her first property in my home country where she live's. when we got married i got her a job in wich she still works and i did not pay a dime for both i pay alimony for my kids and already had property before we got married i tought her how to take care of herself.

I dont see the logic or commen sense in buying property wich i can not own  or via some very dodgy construction.

Very simple i pay it's mine if not i don't pay.

  8. No.
They can't fart over there before they have to pay. Every month they plan how to pay their nice house . car etc. When they go vacation they have to plan how much debts they have when they return.
The value of money have disappeared.
Maybe Thailand isn't the best but it sure is better. Think of a family of four who have to buy winter and summer cloth etc.

So Thai people don't have huge household debt then? Are you a stand up comedian by any chance?

  9. Whats the attraction to said country?Foreign scientists have been  invited to Thailand find  a cure for ebola come on people. After reading al the reactions on the new visa hassle regulations i can only conclude about the people who burnt their bridges with home and are now getting their so called welcome shoved up their @rse.

I still have to find articals in the press or on the net where the biggest moguls of science and industry from the west have made thailand their home.

  10. After seeing foreigners recommend restaurants on Englisch tv channels directed at tourists and expats in pattaya i beg to differ ,put a turd on a plate in front of their face and because of certain libel and defamation laws they would still insist how jummie that turd tastes.

  11. I would rather talk to backpackers most are flashpackers on a gap year and loads a money to spend than those old school sexpests and the many white collar criminals who have re invented them selves in Thailand who have no idea about personal hygiene married to noi the thai chinese how from the sexy man bar in pattaya and are all thailand experts because they read stickmanweekly and old school trincky.

Or TEFL engrit teachers who think they are gods gift to the thai education system.

  12. I had a lot of fun reading readers submissions in the past like the series incountry by chiang mai kelly and princess.

But with all the ads on his site for escorts and bars and such the guy is just making money on the back of woman who come from a bad socio economic background and just like foreign bar owners is just an ordinary pimp.

So he can eff off for all i care and be a sheep farmer in NZ for all i care.

of course all the foreign visitors and expats only come here for the temples and lakorn right?

Nah to become a pimp like stick and promote bars being run by boiler room boys.

  14. Some of us don't like the metro sexual thing being forced upon us ,like cosmetic companys and al their creams to make youre skin look nice etc....

I myself carry a small backpack/daypack when going out for the day.Concerning laptops nowadays I-pad mini and smartphones can do almost anything a laptop can do and are much easier to carry around i like to travel light so to speak.
