  1. My personal opinion on PIH is far from good. Me and the wife have used them 3 times over the years the last and I do mean last time was for GB stones they tried to convince me I had a fever which would require me to stay 1 week then have the operation and stay a minimum of 1 week after. Cost for the op alone was 100k without the 2 weeks of room/care but what got me was the way the doctor spoke to my wife I understand Thai enough to know he wasn't showing her any respect so I pulled the IV lines out and asked for my bill.

That was 4 years ago and strangely never had any GB problems since then.

  2. Yeah or that CEO recently who crashed his Lamborghini and said it was his amulet that saved his life.

The problem is @Malthus101 we are talking about the unknown here something that is pretty much impossible to prove and is often considered laughable or plain hocus pocus to people that don't not believe in their power. Whilst the 'power' is always attributed to the Monk that made/blessed them doesn't mean all Buddhists agree with the claims made about Amulets. Most non-Thai and even some Thai Buddhists would still dismiss the claims of power and fortune that is attached to the them.

On the other hand if you choose to believe and have absolute faith then isn't anything possible?

BTW Its been claimed Jackie Chan rented the most desired Amulet ever made a Somdej Toh Pim Yai Wat Rakang for a reported 50,000,000 THB. A fair bit of change for something made of chalk and bits of rice measuring 23mm x 32mm wouldn't you say!

  3. Lots of variables....

Innerspace thanks for the extensive reply let me see what gaps I can fill in.....

Its for a start up company a friend is running. I was called in on Friday to give some ideas and walked out with more questions than answers. The problem is right now they are unsure how many users and how critical the data will be. As you say too many variables so all I was going to do was put a rough proposal together offering various solutions built around a basic scalable server. Right now its a bare shell office with the electicians still working so there is nothing bar a wifi router for the 2 owners.

They are just outside Pattaya near Sattahip so don't have access to the bandwidth BKK does. I am trying to see if we can get TRUE DOCSIS supplied if so there will be a fairly decent internet connection.

Cost is a major player so a redundant server is not an option right now. To be honest after seeing the quote from the hardware company for a 3TB tape drive being as expensive as the server its self I am initially considering something as simple as a external drive at least until they know what downtime they are able to live with.

I would like to utilise cloud storage and have been looking for suppliers if you have any pointers.

Again thanks for taking the time to reply.

  4. I have no problem people buying things because they think it's beautiful or artistic or rare. But many buyers of amulets etc are buying because of what power they are said to possess. That's the stupid part. Wasn't it the last commander of the Thai army down south that stated he had commissioned amulets to keep the troops safe!

    Sent from my i-mobile i-STYLE Q6

Thaicbr you will find that all Thai's rent Amulets purely on the power there are said to contain its only the tourists that would ever rent for their artistic design.

Before all Thai wars the reigning King has commissioned Amulets for the army for protection going back 800+ years.

  5. Kinda screwed Mrs Para's Q6 that bad recovery could not remove what I had done. Was in BKK yesterday so dropped into MBK to get a replacement recovery ROM and upgrade to JB from ICS.

They upgraded the firmware to the current V9 from the existing V8 and installed a clean recovery BUT said JB will not be available for the i-Style Q6. Kicked up a stink as they had Q7's and Q8's on display saying they were running 4.1.1 but it seems anything Q6 and down will not have the official JB upgrade.

There are places to source a custom JB ROM just a shame i-Mobile don't consider the Q6 worthy of an official solution.

    Looks like its XDA time!

  6. Guys needs some real world advice regarding server backup solutions.

I have been asked it install a simple 50 position office/CAD solution but the price quoted for the server backup is as expensive as the server its self. Was going run a simple RAID 5 3x4TB so need a solution that can run to 8TB.

I thought about cloud then remembered what country I was in!

Any suggestions other than a tape drive?

    Thanks.

  7. Thanks guys, very helpful!

Any REAL advice on buying these things.........

    Thanking you kindly!

    What advice are you after?

Firstly I have to ask why do you want a palad khik you are aware of the history and reason behind them?

As with any Amulet they are not ours to buy or sell its considered very bad to use these words instead we simply 'rent' them.

You need to know the Monk that made it before you can gauge if the rental price is right. 5k is about 4900THB too much for a copy and a fraction of the cost of a sort after one.

Renting direct from a Temple is certainly the easiest way to ensure authenticity. Walking in blind will almost certainly guarantee getting ripped off.

Spotting fake from real is incredibly difficult. I have spent time here ordained as a Monk and have been taught about Amulets by a Thai friend with 40 years of experience but would consider my knowledge about them slightly above ignorant.........

  8. Was bored yesterday so decided to attempt to upgrade my tablet to JB.

Because it’s a Chinese clone it took a while to actually hunt down the chipset on XDA but eventually found it along with a JB ROM from 22/03/13. What threw me is when I upgraded an Android phone I needed to firstly install CWM then the actual ROM but the tablet just needed the ROM.

The battery life is soooo much better and the UI a little slicker and faster.

For someone running an older Gingerbread or Honeycomb I woudl strongly suggest tryiing to find an JB ROM.

  9. and another mystery dead farang in Pattaya ..... well its either Phuket or pattaya ... sad.png

Wrong. More faranags die in American cities than in Pattaya or Phuket. Why isn't the American government investigating all these farang deaths in the USA? Surely millions can't be dying of natural causes. Very disturbing. Don't visit America if you're a farang, as it's the world capital of farang deaths. Stay safe.

Difference is deaths of non-nationals in the US would be investigated. Here in Thailand ther are simply swept under the rug.

I know DaveJones is trying to make a point but it's silly logic. What's the percentage of foreign deaths in the US compared to Thailand? Base this on those who are visiting as short term tourists and long term residents and then you have a chance of comparing apples with apples. I don't experience Thailand as being particularly dangerous for Farangs but that doesn't mean that it isn't.

Agreed mate without breakdowns of the stats they are pointless.

Like everything in life your opinion is based on experiance. Living in Pattaya for 10 yers might change your view on the dangers for tourists in Thailand!

  10. In Thai/Buddhist cultures, one goal, as I understand it, is to see things for what they really are; and to deeply connect actions with their consequences...action and reaction...cause and effect. For the former, a dead body is just that, a dead body...no more no less; the same as a living body. Do you have a problem showing a living body...if not, why a dead one?

In the case of showing a body dead from an accident or other event, in showing the dead body the viewer can directly see the results of a particular action. This can then be an instructional device to reinforce either positive values or courses of action over negative ones. I think it is completely neutral as to any intended disrespect to the family of the deceased.

Finally, I think most Westerners have an irrational fear of death (funny that as so many of them profess belief in a faith system that promises them an eternal afterlife in perfect health (and with 72 virgins [can I put in my order that they be ladyboys] in some illiterations) you would think they would be most eager to get to such a place so death would be most welcome to them. Thais/Buddhists mostly don't share this fear and therefore, I put it to you that these images that seem so distressing to most Westerners are not so to them.

OMGINPATTAYA you are quite right in your understanding of Buddhism. The main goal of Buddhism is to accept suffering and to learn that the path from suffering is through non attachment. When someone dies they still live on in the cycle of Samsara (birth/rebirth) only the physical body is discarded. A dead body means nothing except freedom and the chance to enjoy the good karma accrued during the past life. It amazes me that the only thing you can guarantee is you will one day die but in the West people are never prepared for it and as you say live in fear of the inevitable.

This may be so but Thai Buddhists are also some of the worst offenders possible when it comes to gawping at road accidents. Rubber-necking and viewing gory news photos seem to be very similar practices to me, and I doubt that live bodies would attract as much interest (unless maybe they were naked).

And why not one of them has been set free from this life ready to be reborn into their new life.

  11. "The guards ring the bells hourly from 9pm to 6am to let their supervisor know that all is well. It takes about three minutes for all guards to ring in. This system is used in every prison in Thailand," he said.

This is either sadism or plain stupidity. Same type of moronic thinking applied to the school system in Thailand. The road system. The trash collection. TV shows. Construction. Electrical wiring. Plumbing. Food storage and preperation. etc. etc. etc.

Its neither sadistic or stupid its plain wrong well in Bangkok it is at least.

Certainly all the supervisors go home at night as well as the majority of warders. There is a head count in the rooms just after lock down and then again before prisoners are let out in the morning so ringing of 'bells' is pointless. The prison in Bangkok I was remanded to only had 3 warders for 700 prisoners the whole system is run using trustees.

  12. I want a statistician to compare the 'accident' frequency of low floor dwellers to high floor dwellers.

Foul play should show as a higher frequency high floor bias because if you push a guy off a low floor he might live and ping you for it (so you wouldn't do it).

And then what take it to the BiB's? If it can be said a Farrang jumped zero paperwork for the BiB's anything else is just a head bang.

  13. I think you have highlighted a trend where people sign up for a free email account for personal use then slowly start using it for business.

I have a paid for email account that in the past 11 years has only been off line for a total of 4 hours. I can even encrypt my mailbox with a passphrase so if ever the servers were seized my mail is still securly encrypted. I know it doesnt help you now though.

Have you considered emailing your hacked account and making them an offer?

  14. Really wow thanks for pointing that out.

Can I ask what experiance you have with Thai courts and prisions?

    Irrelevant.

I read all the articles in the Phuket Gazette (before this one).

It's all out there in the public domain if you can be bothered to inform yourself.

Irrelevent! LMFAO so all your posts are basd on what?

I've been through the court system here I am not some armchair critic repeating the at best blatent properganda at worst absolute rubbish printed in most of the papers.

  15. He has pleaded guilty to the stabbing, but has not pleaded guilty to first degree murder.

There will be a lengthy court case.

So what charge has he pleaded guilty too then?

Courtrooms don't work like that (don't you watch TV?)

The charge was first degree murder and he has plead not guilty.

He has admitted to the stabbing.

Really wow thanks for pointing that out.

Can I ask what experiance you have with Thai courts and prisions?

'The charge was first degree murder and he has plead not guilty'

Why the use of past tense has the charge been reduced?
