  1. The big city Chinese who could afford to send their only child to schools with white English teachers,
would think that everybody is just as rich as them.
If the average Chinese were so rich,
then why do so many millions of them work 60 hours a week in factories for only 3000rmb a month ?
There are rich people in any country.  Even African countries have wealthy black citizens.
It is all about the ratio of rich to poor.

Ratio or not, when you've got upwards of 1.5 Billion, the number of feet pounding the pavement is large.

  2. It's the system. In Thailand things happen, public works etc using an age old system which means that every hand the money passes through slips a little of it into a pocket. And every time any type of economic activity takes place, for example, has a stall or shop buying/selling goods, whether it be noodles or aeroplanes, someone else is holding out a hand to rake off the cream. It's a system which works (for Thailand). The fact that this is labelled as corrupt by some other (not all) nations/cultures in the world does not matter much unless it affects OS money coming into the country. Other counties generally have things like checks and balances to make sure money gets where it's supposed to go. Thailand doesn't need that complication, the system can't abide that anyway because of the possibility of people losing face.
So stop pickin' on us! We'll go on our merry way.
Let's face it, corruption works very well in all countries, but there's a different approach to it to cater for local conditions. Same result though - people get rich at the expense of others.

  3. I know foreigners all hate the arrival card, but I think its a good thing to have it for the purpose of tracking down suspects. If there are no arrival card, where are police suppose to find out where a suspect is going in Thailand?

I doubt hotels and hostels can keep up with the daily reportings of guest in the system.

As a foreigner I don't hate the arrival card. After all I have to fill in the arrival card in my own country - Oz - it's the departure card in Thailand that I hate. Get very nervous about it every time I hand over my passport for whatever reason.
I've not had the problem of not having it on exit so far, but not looking forward to the day that it disappears for whatever reason.

  4. Money made on the SET is (or was) tax free believe it or not.  It seems they treat it as a windfall like some countries treat wins on the lottery or from gambling, which is appropriate for the SET. It is a great way to launder money.

This is why Thaksin did not pay any tax on the sale of AIS to the Singaporeans. We know how that has panned out.

Now if our policeman had inside information that would be a very different proposition. (Maybe)

I think the law says that if you own shares for more than 5 years and then sell, there is no capital gains tax.
Also I believe that the purchase price of shares is an income tax deduction in the year you bought them.
Will stand correction. Anyone corroborate this?

  5. Yes its insensitive.. However..

I just had a great day on the bike with the old lady.. Ended up going way up a mountain to a middle of nowhere but well known jungle temple complex in the far north.. Above the temple complex is a resort of rooms, with buddha built into the wall and a toilet block above the decorative buddhas and the temple who is its only source of custom.

My old lady was shocked.. I wasnt..

All of these outrage episodes are shades of grey..

You're definitely in the minority here, with your "old" lady. [emoji16][emoji16]

  6. Maybe you should read a bit more up on Thai law before posting your anti bike posts. Bikes have to stay on those lanes or get fined. I break this law often as it is dangerous.. but the motorbikes are in the right if they drive there because they have to drive there or get fined.

Its the car driver here who is 100% to blame.. no indicator.. not checking his mirror and just going his way. Had the car been on the right lane before this would not have happened.

Look again. I thought I saw at least one flash of an indicator. However, the car is clearly in the wrong - should have changed lanes much earlier. However, again, the bike rider was not looking out for his own safety (I commuted for many years on bikes) - approaching an intersection in the outside lane is risky so you slow down to the point where you can avoid errant cars because your experience tells you there are errant drivers . . . That motosy rider was going too fast and therefore contributed to his demise.

  7. Exactly a country where women are just treated as objects, a country where clicking like on Facebook can end up with years in prison, or simply telling the truth about a companies illegal activities will see you and up in prison, where using a device to quit smoking can and up in prison for years. These laws are inhumane and archaic. Agree thanks but no thanks.

Actually had to read this twice - to check which country you're talking about. Still not sure. Your description applies to both.
