Spread the word! More Brits in Thailand can now vote in the UK
sambum replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
".......even though many of them do not really deserve it" And many more of them DO! If you have paid your dues ( taxes, National Insurance contributions etc) all your working life then surely you should be entitled to the same benefits as someone living in the UK? In fact many people living in the UK are more worthy of your "do not really deserve it" comment! -
Spread the word! More Brits in Thailand can now vote in the UK
sambum replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Oh goody! Now I just need to find an MP who will fight to unfreeze my State pension payments! My previous UK employer gives me increases every year, so why not the Government? And don't give me that b/s about "reciprocal arrangements"! The Government can find millions to look after immigrants to the UK, but they seem unable to find any money to look after the people who have spent all their working lives in the UK and paid their National Insurance Contributions and Income Taxes, who choose to spend their twilight years in another country. The savings they make on not having to pay for medical treatment would probably be sufficient to pay for any pension increments they could pay to the ex pats who live in "non reciprocal countries", but successive Governments don't seem interested in "their own", and pay more attention to the boatloads of foreigners landing on Blighty's shores every day. Could it be that they are wanting to be seen in the eyes of the world as "a caring compassionate country" who will look after anyone who lands on their shores - regardless of religion or nationality - after all they wouldn't want to be seen as racist, would they? -
Must Read Thailand starts checking foreigners' passports on domestic flights
sambum replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
"A foreign passenger must hold the original passport with the name matching that on the boarding pass in order to board a domestic flight, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand said........... " I thought this was always the case? Every time I have flown ANYWHERE I have had to show my passport! -

Prison officials say Thaksin eligible for parole

Mr T could probably arrange for "The Farcemaster General" Brian Rix to write the script for a screenplay of this scenario/farce if he was still with us! Still, it would appear that Mr T is back from the dead - politically speaking of course! -

Once again - certain people being paid for NOT doing their jobs!!! -
I wonder how long it will take and how many more of these incidents (ladyboy = gold = theft) will happen before Insurance companies will refuse to pay out if the insured party is wearing gold in plain view in Pattaya? I also wonder how many incidents it will take before the police either have a meeting to discuss ways of preventing them, as they are spoiling "the image of Pattaya", or will they say "som nam naa", and merely file a report?

Thai Restaurant Operators Ask Government to Unlock Alcohol Sale Hours
sambum replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The lower cost of wine has been talked about and just as quickly forgotten about a few times now! There is no Government Minister in power that sees any benefit to his bank balance by doing it. Compare that with Anutin and the marijuana business! -
Thai Restaurant Operators Ask Government to Unlock Alcohol Sale Hours
sambum replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
"We need this as a New Year gift from the Thai government,” Best of luck with that! But I agree - this outdated nonsensical law should never have been put in place in the first place and should have been lifted at the same time as all the Covid restrictions. Apparently it was to stop children buying alcohol on their way to and from school - what's wrong with shopkeepers asking to see their ID cards? And anyway, "Where there's a will there's a way" - if kids want alcohol, they will always find a way to get it, and a stupid 2 - 5 ban in supermarkets won't stop them!!! -

.........“same same but different” ridicules the way Thai people speak English...." Ahh diddums! My Thai wife and I use that expression all the time, and as far as I know we haven't offended anybody yet - quite the reverse - it's usually met with a smile! It's getting bad when you're scared to open your mouth for fear of "offending" somebody - I think the first time I heard it was when Muslims in the UK tried to get Nativity plays at schools banned because they went against their religious beliefs! I have my own opinion on that scenario, but I can not comment on here for fear of "offending" somebody!!!

Thai Government Debates Alcohol Advertising, Sales Hours
sambum replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
"...it results in increased consumption and drunkenness,...." Completely wrong! This was proved in Scotland many years ago, and without going in to a long explanation, basically, people only have so much money to spend on alcohol, so they tend to drink slower when they have a longer time to drink, hence drunkenness actually goes DOWN! -
Well put! I am 187cm tall and have to be constantly aware of low signs, low poles holding up shop shutters/blinds, low doorways etc. ("Duck or Grouse"? ) Once in Surat Thani I turned a corner and could have been blinded by the cross bar sticking out from a street light. OK, this is Thailand, their country, and all things are constructed by Thais with Thais in mind, and head height to them is quite often eye height to visitors or tourists, so a little bit of foresight would not go amiss when they are constructing the shops/stalls etc. As already mentioned, often the pavements are in such a bad state of repair that you need to have eyes like a chameleon to stay safe!!!

Corrections Dept allows Thaksin to remain at Police General Hospital
sambum replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Wrong! The last election results showed that the majority of people were not happy with the state of affairs! But they also are unprepared to risk their lives with any sort of meaningful protest on the streets. We all know what happened last time they protested - they ended up with 150 illegal senators placed in the Upper House to determine how things should be run in the future, and the last "democratic" election proves it. -

How “peacemaker” Thaksin is stirring up Thai politics
sambum replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Just one of many "miscarriages of justice" favouring the rich and privileged- e.g. Prawit and his watches fiasco, Red Bull "Boss", and one of the worst IMHO, the complete illegal installation of 150 military senators ensuring the future of any "democratic" government in this country. -
