  1. I'm not in Bangkok - Chanthaburi - yesterday bought a new bike off one of the local ProBike dealers, that shop and two others here have their own social cycling groups with midweek evening and weekend rides to match rider capabilities, midweek usually 30-40km, weekends 60-100km. Apart from those rides, good place to meet other cyclists, learn the best places to ride. I clocked 38,000km on my last bike, had one accident 2013 which was my fault, early days I was stopped by Highway Police on Sukhumvit Rd and told it wasn't the place to be and given an alternative route, helpful advice The police here also have a family cycling group, but I haven't been invited to that one, saw them out yesterday parents and kids, good healthy activity. Don't be put off by the negatives, the local cyclists/shops are your best resource.
  2. Her prize money to date exceeds US$1 million, sponsorship estimated at a further US$2-3 million. The sponsorship / promotional payments are likely to continue a few years yet. Good luck to her. She's been inspirational to many a young person for over ten years.
  3. Some nostalgia, 20 years ago 2003. Prompted me to trade my Speed Triple for a TT600 Speed Four 2003 – BACK ON TRACK New Zealander Bruce Anstey sent a resounding message to the racing world when his Triumph Daytona 600 romped to first place in the 2003 Junior TT, finishing 10.96 seconds ahead of his nearest rival and recording the fastest Supersport TT time of 1:15.13.98. He was joined in the top 10 by two other Triumph ValMoto teammates. After a 28-year absence, Triumph was back.
  4. Yes, agree, though that same BP source did provide a detailed explanation; the 50C they're referring to (actually reached 50.2C today) is "realfeel" some weather sites refer to this as "feels like" I returned on Sunday from a cooler climate, simple explanation that a temperature is taken in a shaded sheltered area, so for example an 11C day may have a "realfeel" of 7C if there's a strong wind, rain - wind chill factor. We went out cycling today, temp showed as 34C but realfeel 40C. But for us we needed another level - the heat off the asphalt was intense. Definition: The RealFeel Temperature is an index that describes what the temperature really feels like. It is a unique composite of the effects of temperature, wind, humidity, sunshine intensity, cloudiness, precipitation and elevation on the human body -everything that affects how warm or cold a person feels
  5. Knew two IOM riders when I lived in NZ, both from New Plymouth, Mike King (dnf) and Shaun Harris (two wins and numerous top ten finishes), both survived serious race-career ending accidents there. Earlier this year read that the Ireland road races were unlikely to proceed due to the high cost of insurance to the organisers - brought about by the number of injuries and deaths. Don't know of any updates to this, are they going ahead? Hope this thread continues, I'm not so interested in MotoGP now but may go to Sepang again this year.
  6. ^ I was wrong. Thanks for info. And so is Police General Damrongsak Kittiprapas who on 4 April made the police statement to media that "they would not be returned to Thailand for trial as there is no extradition treaty between Bangkok and Beijing " Foolish of me to think a Police General would know such things! In this case Damrongsak was Damn wrong.
  7. There is no extradition agreement between China and Thailand. The three men are to be prosecuted in China and if convicted may face the death penalty. Google!
  8. Always dependent upon how many flights arrived around the same time. I flew in from Melbourne yesterday, from arrival in the terminal to leaving in a taxi - 36 minutes, would have been quicker if I didn't have to wait a few minutes for luggage. Previous arrival in December was around 50 minutes with only a carry-on bag, anything under an hour to exit I'm ok with.
  9. Port out Starboard home. It's a perpetual myth, just Google it, an urban legend / load of <deleted> easily discredited as bs.
  10. You don't say where you're departing from. Peanut butter was in the news a week ago. Thought your 100g would be a small enough quantity. TSA confirms it considers peanut butter a liquid CNN) – The Transportation Security Administration has confirmed it considers peanut butter a liquid which means you aren’t allowed to bring large containers of it onto planes.
  11. Good news. He's back! Reported as located and OK, from Matichon News
  12. This is simply Thai Post trying to actively compete with the courier businesses, Kerry etc. Daughter #1 runs the in-Thailand online marketing for a fruit export company - over 90% of their product goes overseas, mostly China and Singapore, but they were very successful last season selling top-grade durians individually packed and couriered within this country, and underway now for the current season with an additional employee dedicated to selecting/packing durians. We've sent boxes of fruit to relatives, and have received same - several 5kg boxes of oranges arrived late 2022, all were sent via Thai Post so it's not entirely a new idea.
  13. Your choice to mix with this particular level of Thai society, setting your sights low. I guess you get what you pay for.
  14. Haven't had a problem, been with local Kasikorn 12yrs, there's two staff who seem to be responsible for assisting overseas clients and I'm always sent in their direction; we've done general banking, overseas transfers, investments and insurance through them without issue, when i had a traffic accident resulting in hospital and dental they were great in sorting out my reimbursements through the accident insurance scheme. It's not all bad. And not all staff are 'halfwits'.
  15. Does no one use Google? 66 acres, over 1300 stores. We used to call in when we lived in Sa Kaeo and had to visit Immigration at Aranyaprathet. Get a little electric golfcart to roam around. Don't recall ever buying anything apart from food, if there are as claimed over 1300 stores than there's about 30 of each variety, fake handbags etc. Time filler to browse if you're not in a hurry.
  16. We've encountered 'foreigner' prices in Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia. HAsn't upset any of our Thai companions. Back to the pool - wonderful complex in our little town set in an exercise park; pool entry for me is 20B, indoor gym also 20B, outdoors gym etc free. I'm not in the least outraged that the family pay 10B. When I work offshore my base rate is 1700B/hr, minus tax, I think a minute's work for a swim is reasonable.
  17. I had a Z1000R - the Eddie Lawson Replica model; unfortunately the ones sent to New Zealand were white rather than Kawasaki green. Good bike of its time, comfortable tourer and I had some success drag racing at local events Like this one
  18. Not planned that way, but we live in what would qualify as a 15-minute town Approx 9000 people, 15km away in Chanthaburi city but if one chose, could get by comfortably here with minimal need to go to the city. We have all this, could cycle anywhere in town in ten minutes. And no bar or licensed cafe - perfect for some.
  19. Hi, read your travel/cycling blogs, really interesting adventures in areas of Thailand I'm not familiar with. Thank for sharing your cycling experiences. Happy travels!
  20. Talking big engines; I saw this one at a New Zealand car museum last year 1913 Mercedes 24,000cc
  21. You mean apart from the 400,000 from the Middle East who visited last year? Locally (Chanthaburi) we see African Muslims, a new mosque is under construction in the city, there's a long-established community here.
  22. I didn't know about that one, 2000, there's a Wikipedia page Samut Prakan Radiation Incident Quote: A radiation accident occurred in Samut Prakan Province, Thailand in January–February 2000. The accident happened when an insecurely stored unlicensed cobalt-60 radiation source was recovered by scrap metal collectors who, together with a scrapyard worker, subsequently dismantled the container, unknowingly exposing themselves and others nearby to ionizing radiation. Three patients (the two scrapyard workers and the owner's husband) ultimately died of uncontrolled infection and sepsis, all within two months of exposure.
  23. Really depends what's inside; there's one in Chanthaburi, Taksin Military Camp, that is based around the walls of an old fortress, seven restored colonial buildings/houses from the French occupation 1893-1905 that are now converted to museums.
  24. Hazy sunset Chao Lao beach, Chanthaburi 15 March 2023 Eastern Thailand: Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, Chon Buri, Prachin Buri, Rayong, Sa Kaeo, Trat
