For large sums try to negotiate the exchange rate and get quotes from several banks in person.

  2. Send money to the parents - then have her call the parents and tell them his mom is ill and he has to leave for a few weeks!

Keep giving excuses as the relationship might not last too long!

In time after she has a proven to be honest, loyal and a good mother, and her father has put the shotgun in a locked gun safe, it's time to meet them.

  3. Immigration asks for a white background.

Be sure to note the size of the photo required on the application form and request that from the photo studio.

Also, the angle of your head is important now with your mouth closed for facial recognition.  The U.S. Embassy rejected prior photos I presented due to the angle of the head.  If the headed is tilted down a bit, facial recognition with security cameras is not effective.

I was referred to the photo shop next to the U.S. Embassy.  They are great and their photo size is exact, head angle perfect, white background and they are aware Thai Immigration does not want to see teeth. They do certified translations as well. ?

  4. Tell them you are pregnant and if they force you get the name and their ID number of the operator, his Supervisor and Airport Security Officer.

Call a Police Officer over and tell the Officer you want to file a criminal/ terror complaint against the idiots.  If he refuses get his badge number.

Take their pictures as well and record the conversation without them knowing it.  In most cases it is legal if you are a party to the conversation.

If they ask why tell them you will be filing a criminal/terror complaint naming all parties individually, followed  by a wrongful death civil complaint if warranted.

You might warn them that in most cases Corporations will not pay defense costs for gross negligence.  They will have to sustain that expense themselves.

Tell them if they own property they probably should start looking for a rental!

  5. Most women today are staring in their smart phones or Ipads looking for better deals on the Internet for security for their family members and friends.

The way I see your options are stay in the U.S. and expose yourself to all the Nazi demonstrators, pissed off people from the middle east who lost everything, Mexico, Central America and South America gangs, and drug cartel border jumpers who have an agenda and hungry laid off neighbors when SHTF.

    or....

Bring the little lady home and watch her spend hours on the Internet and spreading your retirment money around to family and friends.

Don't be surprised if an old friend calls and all of a sudden she alleges a family member is sick for a week and when she returns she is happy, wide eyed and has a pink glow to her face. :post-4641-1156694005:

Thailand has changed dramatically, but life is what you make it.

Understand women hate the word retirement knowing you will be hanging around more, less money, less security so she will probably change her attitude towards you.

The best option is to come back, keep your options open with younger women, rent everything and always have backup!  You must control the situation or get eaten alive.  You probably know that already!

The less you have today, the better.

  6. If your not a Thai citizen, your a guest so behave like one!

If you want to change policy go back to your home country to do it!

It's no wonder why Thais are beginning to dislike foreigners who try to change everything.

Planet earth has been doing just fine for millions of years and plastic bags are the least of her worries.

Mother Nature has her own way of purging undesirable matter when needed.

Some fools and sociopaths, aka Trolls, have responded to this post in my opinion.

A-- h--e, you have no idea how much the haircut cost and what my generous tips are.

They obviously think you look sillier than the average farang.

With i get change from 1000 they usually only try to slip out a sneaky 100 .

For 500 baht change it is usually 50 or forget a 20

man you are getting overshafted on the shafting.lol

    That's a very rude post!

You look silly by not reading the entire post.

I posted that  I lived here for 11 years and this short changing just recently started.  If I look silly, why would it start now?

If you are going to be rude, you should scan over your content for errors before posting it so you don't look silly.

Have you ever admitted to anyone you were an ass---e?

  9. I've lived in Thailand for going on 11 years.

During all those years until recently I can't remember a time I didn't get the proper change back when paying with a 1000 THB bill.

I started getting short changed in restaurants about 3 months ago.  Twice, I trusted the waitresses and realized they both shorted me 500 THB when I paid with a 1000 THB bill shortly after leaving the restaurants. My mistake by not paying attention.  Two weeks later, another restaurant waitress shorted me 500 THB again using a 1000 THB bill and I called her on it.  She started to fight with me and I told her, 'remember when I handed the bill to you I said out loud this is 1000 THB.?' A diner next to me confirmed hearing me say that so I got my change.

In the last 20 days this has happened to me 5 more times!  I caught each one.

I even got short changed a few days ago at the 7/11 with a 500 THB bill.  However, I felt that was an honest mistake.

My small bills go quickly and on larger purchases I needed to pull out a larger bill.

I now write my initials and date in small print with a pencil on each 1000 THB bill before handing it out.  This way I can go to the person operating the register and demand to see all 1000 THB notes to check for my note that was handed to the waitress in a change dispute.

I do threaten to call the Police to file a theft report if they do not cooperate.

Yesterday, after getting a hair cut I was shorted by 500 THB again, with a 1000 THB bill, but was able to get my proper change.  That incident and others prompted me to issue this warning.

I now try to pay with the exact amount.

Be aware when getting your change now.

My friend has suggested taking out a huge loan.  He's converted the money to gold bars and enjoying his retirement.

Your friend must be a little concerned with the recent smash in gold prices!

If he is a U.S. Citizen and took out a huge loan he must be concerned about paying it off eventually with THB that is retreating in value, as the dollar surged recently closing in on 10 year high against the THB.

If he is thinking about not paying off the loan, he should consider who owns him and the  consequences.

In view of the world financial situation it's impossible to make future plans now.

There have been reports of people being offered refunds for the disruption during the mourning period.

Yes, I have True satellite. Totally understand the period of mourning and the decision to limit "entertainment" programs, but I just renewed for six months and a lot of the programs I'm paying for are not available or are interrupted. I do expect them to observe the mourning regulations, but they ought to extend my subscription or  give me a refund since I am paying for something I'm not getting.

There are a few things like CNBC, NFL, baseball and some of the documentaries that I would miss if I cancelled my subscription, but it's becoming rather expensive just to watch those few things and even more expensive if I can't even see some of them.

I was not offered any discount.

  12. Highway accidents seem to be increasing and always were a concern to me doing visa runs while traveling long distances.

Years ago, some Visa run operators provided luxury buses that were much safer than overcrowded, tin can, mini vans.

I remember the early morning runs, year after year, long ago, in the mini vans with the driver struggling to keep his eyes open and a few, very scary near misses with semi trucks.

I ended up flying to Vietnam and back the same day for the airport entry stamp when appropriate, prior to obtaining my retirement extension.

I personally would rather pay more then risk being crushed and burned on a Thai highway.

  13. I've been subscribed to True Cable for about two years and for the last several months I've asked myself many times, 'why I don't cancel it?'

In discussing my frustrations with friends, they have all said that they cancelled True Cable T.V. long ago for similar frustrations.

Some friends inquired about the service with other friends before signing up and after listening to the disappointments, they never subscribed.

They all agree, free U-Tube and Net flicks are their preferred choice.

This month because of the mourning period, I could not get one movie channel I was paying for a short period of time.  I could not even get music.  I called True and explained that I was sorry for their loss, and after living here in Thailand for over 10 years, I'm a bit sad myself over recent events.  However, I'm paying extra for movie  stations and asked they do the honorable thing and credit me for the movie stations only.  They never agreed to do that.

I find myself watching free U-Tube movies daily and seldom even watch True cable as I can no longer stomach American/European news and their financial reporting.  I really enjoy the old movies and historical videos.  Most of the new movies that came out in the last 2 years  are trash in my opinion.

The other night I turned on the T.V. and after a month found an old movie on True that I really enjoyed.  Half way through the movie, True shut off the movie and replaced it with Thai news.  I then shut off my T.V. and did a search on T-tube for the movie.  I found it and watched the remainder on U-tube for free. That was my final straw.

I will be cancelling my subscription to True T.V. today.

To take my monthly fee and shut off movies in the middle of programming,  many times, combined with so many old movie repeats I've found the service unbearable in my opinion.

If a small business person in the cable business did what they currently do, he would be out of business in no time in my opinion.

Do you feel the same way I feel now?

Can anyone recommend another cable T.V. option?

  14. It's getting very difficult to extend visas now and the playing field is no longer level.  It's very disappointing and like climbing a ladder.

Immigration no longer follows their own Q&A in their web site which makes it difficult for the applicants and the officers.  What use to take me one trip, now takes three bank letters and three trips.

I've been here 10 years and all my long time expat friends have left because of visa restrictions, a bad economy in their home country, their Thai wife being dishonest. They also had concerns about when the Police were randomly looking in their bags, pants pockets, being subjected to pee tests, more than once in one week.

That being said, I still enjoy Thailand and the herd that leaves will be replaced with another herd, probably Asian.  And, I have no problem with that.

  15. The problem is most customers don't ask to turn the music down or off!

I always ask to turn it down.

Some of the music is downloaded from the Internet and the volume goes up and down, which is annoying in a public place.

If everyone understood how damaging loud music is too their hearing, it would not be a problem.  :shock1:

  16. I stopped using Siam Bank, because they demanded on my first visit to come back the next day to pick up the letter!  No one was waiting at the time for the bank representative.  I even spoke with her Supervisor and I got a big, "no", come back."

This month, Immigration on two ocassions, demanded the bank letter and the savings book be updated the day the application is presented.  Which is another problem if you want to arrive at Immigration early, like 7 a.m., to get a place in line.

That is not possible with Siam Bank, Soi 11, Nana; if they still hold firm on their policy that never made much sense to me.

If they have a boiler plate letter, it would take two minutes to fill in the date, persons name, principal balance, date of deposit and back account number.

I found Kaskikorn Bank by the Nana BTS to be the most helpful.

  17. Also, if you are moving to Pattaya, Immigration is denying retirement extensions in Jomtien Immigration, unless you have lived in that district for a minimum of 6 months!  They would not even take my change of address form after I showed a change of address supporting documentation including charges to my credit card. I recently moved and the big boss, out of uniform, in the office in the rear, referred me back to Bangkok Immigration.  I ended up not living in Pattaya, so I would not have to leave the country and start all over with an O visa.

I then attempted to get a retirement extension in Bangkok, District 1 Immigration and was denied as they took the position with the combination method; funds have to be seasoned 3 months at the time of the application which is contrary to their own website written rules.  I had over 800,000 THB in a Thai bank + my retirement letter notarized by my Embassy. Also, a bank letter and updated savings book dated the same date as my visit. They said to come back in 10 days as their formula will allow me to get the extension.   They are also demanded both the bank book and the bank letter be dated the same day as the day of the visit.

It really is hard to wrap my head around all this after 10 years living in Thailand.

I, as most want to follow the rules, but if they would only update their website so time and money is not wasted, both for the Immigration Officers and the applicants.  It's gotten to a point, no one is confident they have everything in order to be granted an extension and many are having to return multiple times and the long lines reflect the confusion.

Good advice but, in the OP's case, he did as you advised. As soon as he saw the stamp in the passport, he pointed out the (deliberate) error. It did not help. They refused to correct it.

In that case I would have demanded to speak with his Supervisor and continue going up the chain of command the same day even if I have to call higher ups.

If that didn't work, I would pay a competent lawyer with political connections a retainer to call the Officer and go back up the chain of command.

If that didn't work, I would leave the country as recommended and start all over.
