Nice thread about a country most of us wouldn't visit now. As a fellow teacher in a "dangerous" area, Narathiwat Province in Thailand's restive deep south, it's good to read about a country I'd love to visit one day. Just not under current circumstances.

Don't assume everyone in Thailand is on the booze. In Pattani, the overwhelming majority of people do not consume alcohol. Nor do they celebrate Loy Krathong.

What does it matter what the founder of Islam was like? It is about the people who are living now. Are they good people or not? And, yes, just like with non-muslims, most are good, kind-hearted people. I live in Changwat Narathiwat and have only had good experiences with the locals in all my 8 years of living here.

All civil servants get hazard pay on top of their regular salary. That's why even my buddhist gf hopes that the explosions around us in Yala and Narathiwat will continue. I am so used to car bombs now. Just praying to the Almighty Lord that my partner and I won't get caught up in it. To you outsiders: please come holiday here in the Deep South! The military will never leave the south. There is too much money involved. Even my wife, a civil servant in Narathiwat wants the unrest to continue and the military to stay. The bombings are a way of life here. All we can do is pray they won't hit us.
