Russian motorbike rider dies after crashing into minivan in Karon
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
While the van cutting the corner was my initially suspicion as a contributory factor... the photo shows the van to the very left of his own lane.... The Motorcycle on the wrong side of the road. There is no indication that the van cut any corner in this case. It would simply appear that the motorcyclists was descending the hill too fast on a wet road and lost control hitting the van. Also without a helmet. A perfectly avoidable incident if driving with caution, and likely an avoidable death if only for a helmet. -
Russian motorbike rider dies after crashing into minivan in Karon

We need to bring back the negative emoji for posts such as this... ... what’s worse is that (so far) 3 laughs, 2 likes and a thumbs up.... a sad testament to those who posted such as response as well. -
It can be caught in Bangkok.... towards the end of rainy season when there is plenty of pooled water, perfect breeding ground for mozzies.... We usually get a warning from my Sons school about Dengue and are advised to apply repellant.

The Aeades Aegypti mozzie.... utterly nasty b@$tards..... ... Notably bad at behind the tree line in Koh Samet and Koh Chang... in late afternoon they seem to attack relentlessly like something out of a Jumanji (movie) - even mozzie repellant doesn’t do the full job... long loose clothing !!

I guess its fairly easy to do when typing out the number then not double-checking the amount - complacency will naturally develop when cashless payment is the norm. Props to the restaurant for attempting to contact the customer. Could they not also just contact the Bank to refund the 3978 baht to the customers account ?

As you mentioned - its quite possible that the Lambo was approaching at speed, the pickup (with eggs) changed lanes without looking or simply thought the approaching Lambo was too for off... There is no mentioned of how the accident happened though. But, as fare as the article is concerned, its beside the point: the driver of the Lambo swapped, and both the driver and passenger could be facing serious charges.

You honestly cannot think of any other reason why they felt they needed to switch places?? The obvious assumption is that the foreigner had been drinking.... Or, as another poster mention, perhaps the insurance only covered the ‘other person’.... (quite possible that insurance on a super-car is named driver only)...

An ellipsis is perfectly legit to be used when you've put your point across and intentionally left the rest of the meaning out... ???? What have squashed circles got to do with this ? ????

I find it hilarious when some posters end their statement / arguement with ‘period’... or ‘full-stop’, even funnier when they write it in capitals as if this adds a terminating influence to the debate they now consider closed because they have had their say !!!... .... Posters who use such ‘worded’ punctuation are dumb PERIOD / FULL STOP.... I rest my case... (yeah, thats another one !)... Having digressed slightly, this ‘full-stop’ business is just attention seeking wokeism from a failed comedian who has turned to tik-tok for attention.... I wonder how offended she would be at multiple fullstops, as is my habit when writing on a forum...

When my son was about 1 my I needed to go about 1km down the road. My wife had the car. Adamant that I’ll not take our child in any vehicle without a ‘child seat’ I took the push-chair and set off.... .... Big mistake, the pavement was hardly navigable, then I had the motorcycles to contend with some of whom were getting angry because I was in their way on the pavement (sidewalk). It would have been far safer to simply get a taxi... Thailand is a place which has no respect for the pedestrian whatsoever and a far less understanding of those with mobility needs. Thailand is a developing nation of course, so it can’t have the funds to do a lot of things. However, these issues are often attitude rather than ‘finance’ related - the general attitude filters down from the top and that attitude is that people don’t really care about those outside their immediate circle of influence... hence this is the general attitude - out of sight, out of mind.

Why Don't Thais Care If Their Kids Die
richard_smith237 replied to Bangkok Barry's topic in Family and Children
When people argue that they don’t want Thailand to turn into a ‘nanny state’ like home, it is for these reasons I disagree with them. Rules and regulations when adequately enforced protect us - the above example posted by possum is a perfect example of exactly why we need the government to step up and protect us. While some rules from our home countries may seem stifling and controlling and perhaps unnecessary there are many more which are in place purely for the welfare and safety of the general public - in Thailand, these rules exist, but they are not enforced. In the situation above ‘the nanny state’ would ensure the injured party is looked after - while there may be a lot to be said against an ‘over controlling nanny state’ there is a lot to be said for a government that ensures regulations are enforced for the betterment and general protection of society. -
Why Don't Thais Care If Their Kids Die

I don’t subscribe the the idea that ‘the farang is always at fault’ here... I’ve been involved in road incidents here and thats just not my experience. I’ve been dealt with in a manner I would consider fair and have never had to ‘pay-out’ although I accept that it does happen where a foreigner is ‘treated unfairly’ as the BiB and 3rd party conspire to make him pay out. What I hear of more often that usually the ‘weather person’ pays, this is usually the car. The incident follows the path of least resistance... motorcycle and car hit each other, motorcycle falls off, police come, 3000 baht gets thrown in the motorcyclists direction just so the car driver can get on their way again as quickly as possible (many different scenarios of course). This ‘path of least resistance’ and (apparent) wealthier party pays seems to have become the standard procedure. When foreigners are involved, most of the time they may not understand this and claim unfair treatment. This ’social norm’ of weaker party gets away with it, wealthier party pays out (in small incidents) is perhaps one of the reason why so many ride around with an utter lack of care, there is nothing in society to holds them accountable... The reason I have ‘dash-cams’ is so that IF a situation occurs, I have the proof to say no, regardless of how ’strongly’ the BiB may suggest I am at fault (if I’m not)... -
Thailand to issue COVID-19 reclassification measures this Friday

It Covid started in Thailand in Sept 2019 ??? ???? -
Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, lymphatic filariasis... ... You’re in trouble... Take a shot of SangSom straight away...????

It could be argued that the vast majority of people involved in accidents (single person) make poor judgement somewhere along the way.... be it motorcycle accidents, or simply tripping over due to not looking where they were going properly. The good judgement this gent possessed was to live his life to the full....

Pathetic comment.... Are you suggesting that ALL paragliders give up because you think they may put a ‘rescuer’ at risk ??? Perhaps rock climbers and those who go hiking should give up too ?? Any accident like this with injuries can happen to any paraglider, its part of the risk, which ultimately is minimal. It is a valid point for those who make it that age is factor in the extent of injuries; older bones are more brittle, but his experience may also be a factor in avoiding a lot of incidents in the first place, so its a trade off - I suspect this guy has been paragliding for decades. Age is of course a factor in the recovery - I hope its swift. I’d rather associate with the 78 year old paraglider than some of the horribly bitter and halfwitted posters in this thread given some of the responses. I wonder how many of you with negative comments ride a motorcycle.

Its not the dogs fault it bites a child in the face ??? The dog is just doing what it does right ? And thats the whole point... a PitBull does what dogs do, but far more aggressively with far more power, far more frequently. Many of the ‘dangerous’ dogs we discussing are bred to instinctively take the head and back of the neck - this is different from a poorly trained Golden Retriever snapping as a ‘reaction’... The ‘dangerous dog’ ‘attack’... there was a horrific video of this just last year. https://aseannow.com/topic/1220657-pit-bull-attacks-three-year-old-child-has-to-go-and-live-with-gran-as-parents-demand-dogs-removal/ ------ I also agree that young children should not be left alone with any dog, even if its a cockapoo.

Why Don't Thais Care If Their Kids Die
richard_smith237 replied to Bangkok Barry's topic in Family and Children
I struggle with it too... I can understand the ‘necessity aspect’ of it where families are on a motorcycle. I don’t understand the aspect where 10 year-olds are permitted to ride a motorcycle, at all. I put it down to laziness rather than any form of necessity. As others have written, there seems to be a very fatalistic mentality amongst the poor, this is combined with a ‘it won’t happen to me’ attitude... As far as ‘what happens if / when one crashes into us’... DASH CAM... Kids riding like nutters and stupid drivers taking crazy chances is the very reason I have a forward and rear facing dash-cams in both my car and on my motorcycle. -
But a lot more, disproportionately more where Pitbulls are the culprit. More attacks / More deaths - identifying that other dogs have attacked does not diminish, reduce or normalise the incidence of PitBull attacks. A PitBull is 6x more likely to attack than the next most dangerous dog, the Rottweiler. A PitBull is 36x more likely to kill than a Rottweiler. A PitBull is 300x more likely to attack than a Golden Retriever. A PitBull is 100x more likely to kill than a Golden Retriever.
