  1. Is Japan really that expensive ??? - I don’t think its crazy expensive, or very very expensive. Its as affordable as decent resort in Thailand (i.e. SoSofite / Marriott etc...) 3 nights in Ginza - ¥56,700 / 14,700 Baht - not so expensive, thats a pretty average hotel though. Comparing like for like - Marriott in BKK is 7,600 Baht per night / Tokyo is 7,500 baht for the same nights. A Ski resort hotel is 42,000 baht for 7 nights (pretty average lodgings). Food is also reasonable... beer too... Of course, not as cheap as street food and you can’t find 500 baht a night rooms above a go-go bar (or at least I don’t think so)... but its not crazy expensive.
  2. At one point this year I held legal residency in 3 separate countries outside of the UK. Example: Someone who works on Rotation in Dubai, has UAE residency, and can still live in the UK - thus the ‘work permit’ angle is not right. I could be work permitted in Thailand and travel back and forth to the UK, still living in the UK. Thus, our UK licence is not voided just because we have legal residency in another country. On this thread is seems some are ‘digging’ really hard to try and find a reason how someones UK Driving Licence may not be valid. So far, the only reason a UK driving license may not be valid is if someone doesn’t have, or no longer has a UK address at which to register the licence.
  3. Does the DVLA give any mention of ‘permanent address’ ?? or is that ’your take on it’ ??? The DL has to be registered at a UK address.... I haven’t seen anything yet which would suggest having a UK driving licence registered to an address we live at ’sometimes’ (whenever in the UK) is illegal. There is no ’time stipulation’ which suggest we have to be living at that address for 6 months per year (or whatever) for the licence to be valid. Can the Inland Revenue use ’driving licence status' to decide your tax residency?... especially when you can prove you are not in the UK for more than 91 days per-year.
  4. So? So.... It doesn’t seem that its illegal for those those who have a UK address and still have ties to it to have a UK licence. The tax resident part was simply to clarify that tax residency is not the same as having an address.
  5. If your parents have joint names on their utility bills then you are not classified as living there if no utility bills have your name on them. So you can't keep your UK license registered to that address. Don't be silly... Plenty of people over the age of 18 still live with their parents. Using your logic any adult living at an address where the utility bills are in someone else’s name cannot have a driving licence.... I agree with your comment below... Don’t feed the troll... but that troll is you with the dumb flawed assumptions are peddling as fact...
  6. I think we need to be clear on ‘resident’ and having an Address at which we sometimes live. i.e. I’m not a Tax resident in the UK... I’m not there for more than 91 days per year. But, I have a (UK) Bank Account and Driving Licence registered to my Parents UK address which I live at whenever I visit the UK. I know we are discussing the finer idiosyncrasies of the law and for the bigger picture it doesn't really matter too much, nevertheless, the discussion is somewhat interesting. So... I am wondering if my UK Driving License is in fact ‘legal’ as I do live at the address registered on my Driving Licence... Just not all year round. I suspect many of us fall within this a ‘grey area’..... where there is no specific answer.
  7. do you really imagine that the police can not do their jobs? One of the prime jobs of the police is checking addresses. Now it is quite likely that if there is no serious need to check that it maybe such a low priority that they don’t spend the time , but they absolutely have the ability. Its a valid question... At a traffic stop, how can the police actually check if you reside at that address or not ??? I reside at my UK address for about 7 weeks per year - is there a time limit whereby its decided we ‘don’t’ reside there ????
  8. Firstly, its mouth.... if you are going to fire a childish insult the best you can do is try to get it right... Also, I don’t use my ‘mouth’ to type, open or closed... !!! ???? Now... can’t you just accept the discussion like an adult without the emotional drama... ...some people are so far out there on the spectrum they can’t handle a simple discussion... Your original comments lacked clarity, hence the response you received - thats all... ... you were not clear that you had a UK Green & Pink Paper DL issued before 1998... You only mentioned that you had a Pink DL which led to the misunderstanding that yours was a Pink Card DL.... .. You have got angry, which you could have avoided if your comments in the first place were clear and unambiguous....
  9. Done with you. Join that special list. Hilarious... you reply with something completely irrelevant, then get bent out of shape when the irrelevance is highlighted !!!..... and to top it off... “Ooooh... you go on my ignore list” as if lacking the emotional tools to handle a discussion is a win !!!... Now... Orinoco... if you take a step back from yourself... Kwilco may actually have helped you... The validity of a the Pink Driving Licence (card with photo) in the UK is 10 years.... ... Thus, what is the Expiry date on your UK Driving Licence (if you have had it for 20 years), have you renewed it every 10 years ? Mine was renewed in 2015 and will require another renewal in 2025.
  10. Op could offer money to the Ex in exchange for transferring ownership into his name. Personally - with something like this I’d be tempted to play dirty. Get the Ex onside telling her he’ll give her a pre-agreed amount to transfer the registration into his name. Once done, tell her to take a hike, it was never her car in the first place !... But... first things first... The op is not in Thailand until late Jan - does he even have possession of the car or has the exGF already sold it on ???...
  11. My bad - I somehow missed that Part... so its a Yamaha Finn 115.. I didn’t know if ‘semi-autos’ are sold any more.... It's not something I ever considered. -------- Based this its not a 15 year old bike... has the Op successfully recreated the stalling issue ? (i.e. in a quiet car-park?)..
  12. [deleted - I guess you are referring to pleple's post]
  13. IF they have the Blue registration book for the car, why will they not hand it over if the car is yours ??? A loan-shark is holding it? some other reason?
  14. Are people really comparing 'killing someone while drunk, on cocaine and speeding’ to someone ‘using a visa agent’ ??? - thats some grade A1 apologist s#!t right there !!!...
  15. IF it stalls in gear, there is no power to drive the engine... the engine doesn't 'free-wheel' at low speeds, it just locks - thats why we can’t push a bike which is in gear (on or off). As others have pointed out, it would be helpful to know what sort of bike this is. At the moment I’m guessing its something like a 15 year old Honda Click.... I don't know if semi-automatic scooters are still sold.
  16. You've had an account and PIN Numbers for decades, nothing new there - the same arguments were made about the risk of getting your card skimmed. I agree with the rights to privacy - but when we enter a public domain we give up some of those rights, i.e shopping on Amazon or any other online purchase - I don’t see that as a major issue. You have quite rightly pointed out the concern surrounding the harvesting of financial data, there is security in place - there is risk of that being hacked. But the ‘weak-link’ is humans who in a corrupt world can sell on our CC information etc - that has already been happening for years. What is potentially far more concerning than any of the above is identity theft...
  17. Did you just see a cat walk past twice ???
  18. You mean you bought some boots online and now the AI thinks you should upgrade to some stylish ones ???? ????
  19. Don't be so bloody riduculous. And by the way, I don't have a wife. relax... that comment wasn’t targeted at you.... just a generalisation, with a little humour, about how some may be paranoid about ‘targeted advertisement’....
  20. Of course we know how this works.... but is it really such a significant impact on your life to face targeted adds you can ignore if you want ? You are bothered about it because you want to be bothered about it. Everything around us is marketing and we face it all the time, but ultimately, If you don’t want to buy something don’t buy it. Other than seeing adds you don’t like because you feel invited that the artificial intelligence of marketing algorithms knows something about you and you don’t like it... What is really harmful about any of this to you ??? The only things I can imagine would be harmful is ’targeted pricing’... i.e. when looking to buy a plane ticket etc - its more expensive because ’the system’ knows we want to fly from xxx to xxx in that month every year.... Of course, were not at that stage and not sure we will get to that stage. So I wonder if all this paranoia is not just getting worried about something for no logical reason, we just don’t like it and thus look for justification. Personally, if I have to face adds at all, I'd rather have targeted adds than random rubbish I’m not interested in..... Fortunately, we’re not quite there yet as I’m not getting a load of Ads for ’things 16 year old girls like’ after searching for an ideal Christmas present for my niece !!!
  21. Abhorrent criminal behaviour... throw away the key.. Some of the excessive comments I read on this forum often indicate some of the guys are really out there on the spectrum.... or as Robin Williams once quoted.... [they].
  22. In what way do you get targeted and by whom ? Just asking because I haven't been targeted by anyone Who out of ‘all and sundry’ is going to be able to get hold of his financial records.... I can imagine those who make such statements thinking.... “There is no way I want Bob to get my financial records, he will target me to buy those windows he sells, he’ll never leave me alone knowing I bought windows 10 years ago” !!!!! ???? Or... he’s worried that just like 'Peter the perv'.... who purchased a five-knuckle-shuffle device from knockoneout.com and they have pestered him ever since.... He can’t open his e-mails in-front of his Wife !!! ????
  23. That shows that you really don’t understand the difference dynamics of riding, gyroscopic stability helps very considerably at low speeds probably from about 5kph and up, so city speeds? Absolutely. What all of our discussion ultimately highlights is that you’ve completed missed the point of what is ideal for a new-untrained rider on Thailand’s roads. You have locked yourself into an opinion about gyroscopic forces of large wheeled motorcycles compared to regular scooters and use this as the only facet to imply larger wheeled motorcycles are better than scooters for a new rider in Thailands. For a new rider any advantage of stability a ‘larger wheeled’ motorcycle brings is cancelled out by the other factors such as gears, clutch, footbrake etc and yes, weight, because lightweight large wheeled motorcycles are not available in Thailand... the Honda CB125R is perhaps an example of one of the lighter ‘large wheeled’ motorcycles available - and thats certainly not easier or simpler to ride than a Honda Click. Additionally, the difference in gyroscopic stability between 14” and 17” rims is not significant enough at city speeds to make much difference.... You have ignored the points such as gears, clutch control, foot braking and the ease of manoeuvrability around vehicles in gridlocked traffic and approaching / filtering through the traffic when approaching traffic lights and junctions. As such, your point is utterly irrelevant to the point of being preposterous. There is no way at all that any ‘real motorcycle’ is easier to ride than a scooter for a new rider. You are on the wrong side of this one, your advice is flawed. Your advice is valid only IF a motorcyclist wants to ride at reasonable speeds outside of the city and towns, between towns, on inter-province roads etc.. in which case a larger motorcycle i.e. 300cc and up is more ideal than a scooter....
