  1. You are making an utter fool of yourself... It seems you are implying the Thailand Motor Vehicle Act 1979 is incorrect !!!.... On one thing we agree... its a good idea you do leave... !! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Driving_Permit
  2. And you also can in Bangkok.... (with a British Driving Licence). Why is this ??? Because we can legally drive on a Driving Licence which is in English, has photo ID and is issued by an authority representing the government which is a signatory of 1949 or 1968 convention on road traffic... Legally residents need to be driving on a Thai Licence, this simple transference is recognition of this regulation... an IDP has never been needed for this...
  3. Are you suggesting that the foreign sources you are quoting are correct and the Thai Law as quoted and translated from the Motor Vehicle Act 1979 is incorrect ??? Because, to me your comments read as though you are suggesting the Motor Vehicle Act 1979 is superseded by what a British Government and Aus Website say it is !!!...
  4. ....the correct spelling of the septic bastardisation of Tyre and what we put on our cars, motorcycles and bicycles !!!... ????
  5. Its a 10min job - just put the pedals on it and tighten a few things. I had bikes from Decathlon delivered (to my home in Bangkok) for my Wife and Son... simple stuff - hardly takes a day of engineering. Its a shame those shops in Nan don’t have links to website so the Op can check his options. Do they have the right size ?? I wanted a 29”er.... Only one shop in Bangkok (Scott) had one that size.. Very few shops in Bangkok even had 27” bikes.. (wheel size) - Giant, which I figured were a very good and reasonably priced option had nothing my size - I contacted dealers all over Thailand. Scott was the only option so I went with that... I wanted something more than the basic 12,000 baht Mountain bike from Decathlon.. But now they have that 28,000 baht bike which looks like a decent set up (though the Op clearly doesn’t want go that expensive). I suspect size cold be the real issue here. IF the Op can contact those Shops in Nan and they can send him photo’s etc of what they have - but that depends heavily on the shop staff / owner being service minded and doing a bit of work which is often a tall ask in many such cases.
  6. OK... so they’re Remax RB S17. Both will (should) connect at the same time (I’m not aware of any headphones that connect L & R individually). If the headphones are connected and one side isn’t working - check your L / R sound settings on your laptop or device to which you are connected (also try different devices to see if the issue is device specific). IF only one of the headphones continues to work and all other options are exhausted, it could just be that your headphones are broken. IF you can’t get the volume any higher than you are currently achieving through the volume control on the headphones, check the source... you may be at low volume at the source (the volume of some headphones do not synchronise with the source).
  7. Get your Bank Book printed and see what it identifies on that... The Immi officers ‘just flick through it’... so accidentally ‘loosing the page’ (ripping it out) could be the solution !!
  8. Not per my post further up from UK govt website Thailands laws are not dictated by what is written on a UK Government Website. Thailands laws own this subject are stated in the Motor Vehicle Act 1979. Section 42-2 “In case there’s a treaty between the Thai government and a foreign government regarding mutual acceptance of driver’s license, an alien who doesn’t have an immigrant visa may drive a motor vehicle with a driver’s license issued by such a foreign government, or an automobile association authorized by such a foreign government.” This is for ’tourists only’ - residents (those on Non-Imm visas etc) require a Thai Licence .
  9. You can only get that IDP if you are in the UK - there is no remote option. It doesn’t hurt for a tourist to get one if they can and may avoid some hassle with a police officer who doesn’t know his own laws or is trying pull a fast one... But, for a many tourists (etc from Aus or UK etc) who is already here and then decides they want to drive, they can legally drive using their home country licence - legally an IDP is not required.
  10. The Op doesn’t mention that he rents in his original post. He only mentions that he’s rending half way down the first page of the thread. Important info he should have lead with. That said - a lot of people reply without reading the whole thread to get updated information before the fire off a reply from the hip...
  11. Good - you are in a position to make an easy decision - (you don’t own it and can move). You don’t want to move - Thats naivety.... it’s far easier and simpler to move away from this issue. IF this issue does get dealt with, who will move in next ? the juristic committee don’t care, so they don’t care who moves in an who causes issues in other rooms or other floors, it could be dogs, other rooms used as a brothel or crack-house etc... its just not worth it. Moving to a better place is the only sensible solution. You could call the police, but do you really trust them not to tell the LB that the foreigner across the hallway has ‘grassed him/her up’... and... you know it, 'no one likes a grass !!!'.... that LB will hate you and in a cracked up state potentially cause you a world of problems. This is defiantly one of those ‘walk away’ situation.... life too short, just be happy somewhere else. ------ If you walk away, will you lose deposit ? probably. Just use your deposit as your last months rent - then claim the owner didn’t fulfil their part of the contract as the property isn’t safe with a crackwhore living opposite.
  12. I’m not exactly sure what the issue is here.... Is the rim slightly too small for the tyre ? Or has the rim bent out so the bead of the tyre doesn’t lock in place when there is pressure in the tyre ?
  13. I also think its quite incredible and also quite fitting for this enigma that is Thailand !!!... Marijuana is obviously quite harmless and has medicinal benefits while at the same time causing very few social problems (no need for a debate on this). This forward thinking direction from Thailand is extremely progressive, yet at the same time extremely clumsily laid out from a legal perspective. I think ‘narco state’ is extremely harsh, its nothing like that... but giving people the freedom to smoke dope if they want is perfectly fine IMO, Thailand has placed itself ahead of the curve here.
  14. If it is that... Give something like Zovirax cream a go... If it is some form of herpes a Dr could also prescribe some antiviral medication which can kick its backside (I’m not sure what its called). Best to see a Dr. of course.
  15. Do you use ‘burner phones’ so you can’t be traced ??? Wear a hat and never look up so the camera’s can’t use face ID ? Never use social media, right ? - only anonymous media like this forum? Always use a VPN ? Never use online or mobile Banking ? Never use online shopping such as Amazon, Lazada, Shopee ? Always pay for your full hotel stay in advance and use a cash-deposit (no card) ? Where is the line drawn on a neurotic ‘cash only’ ideology ??? Just use whatever is the most convenient... in some cases its cash, in others its a Credit Card, in or paying via QR code, ApplePay or ’Tap n Go’...
  16. You could tomorrow... you don’t know that and if you did you’d likely lose the cash in it. Of course thats not justification to go ‘cashless’... the point is to show that everything comes with risk... card skimming at ATM’s is another risk with cash... I’m not anti-cash at all by the way... I’m just anti anti-cashless if that makes sense...
  17. I am the second card holder on 3 of my Wife’s credit cards (my name on the card etc) - they work exactly the same. IMO - this is a far simpler solution than the ’secured credit card’ option.
  18. Unfortunately the “contagion effect” is a real thing and has spawned copycats of major and horrific murders world wide... .... Its one of the reason there is a drive by some to limit the reporting of such events so that nut-cases are not given ideas.... It's a sad testament to the society we live in, but we need to recognise there are quite a lot of unhealthy minds out there.
  19. Definitely agree with that - the BiB often make up their own laws.... But, most of the time they know what they are doing and are trying it on to earn extra tea-money. When they know we know... they back off quickly enough... its just a game.
  20. And... Further anecdote.... About 20 years ago I was stopped at an expressway toll booth and asked for my IDP... only had a British Licence... no idea what was going on - I ended up paying the 500 baht on the spot fine !!!... (stupid me !)... A few years later, I was stopped again, and asked for an IDP, only had a British Licence, I was told it was a 500 baht fine... I laughed... no way !!... Picked up the phone to ‘call a friend’ (as my Thai was not very good at that time)... No.. BiB waved me on... Around the same time, I was stopped, not asked for IDP, Driving licence, but I was asked for my Passport... I laughed and said no... drove off !!!.... The BiB do try it on, which is why its advisable for newbies to carry their IDP when driving and especially when riding a motorcycle..... But, the reality is MOST tourists cannot get an IDP for a motorcycle licence becasue they don’t have a motorcycle licence - but they may get away with an IDP for a car, and the BiB may accept it.... it just saves hassle.... But... If they are confident and especially if they have a Thai speaker they can call, these sort of issues disappear very quickly.
  21. Finally someone with real experience You mean someone with an anecdotal piece of information which which backs up your argument. 20 years ago.... (I mention the duration just to highlight my ‘real experience’ as it seems you like that, or do you only like that when it backs up your view of the world ?).... ... anyway... 20 years ago I was involved in an accident in Thailand... Only a UK licence.. Police involved, they took my UK Licence (and returned it later), insurance paid out... no issues. (I was here on 6 months Multiple entry tourist visa).
  22. Don’t you recognise the fundamentally flawed logic in the example provided ??? You are using an example of the law not being enforced to suggest that a false law is being enforced ????? hmmm.... I’m not sure you thought that one through !!!
  23. Key words: Decent / Reliable / Size.... IF you want a decent, reliable bicycle thats the right size you are perhaps advised to get one from Bangkok.... You can of course take your chances on renting one up-country... but thats a chance and you could end up ruining your plans by waiting to get the thing fixed all the time. One Option is a reasonably priced bike from Decathlon Thailand https://www.decathlon.co.th/en/all-sports/cycling-13145?refinementList[tes_product_nature_en][0]=mountain bike Example below: 12,000 baht... Free Shipping >> you could order to be delivered to wherever you are staying in Naan.
  24. Yes! the ‘Forum rules according wannabe moderator DezLes’ !!!... .... now, who’s more off topic ?? the ongoing discussion of credit cards vs cash and other forms of payments in outlets in Thailand, including supermarkets such as Big-C..... OR... you telling us what we can and can’t discuss ????
  25. You don't stop do you. I wasn't trying to present any comparison - or did you miss the bit about me not wanting to discuss my reasons. The reference was to show that I have used a cc extensively elsewhere but choose to use cash here. End of. Because you don’t have a Thai CC - thats why you don’t use one here... .... Agreed. End of....
